  • Drivers who frequent Eight Mile and the northbound Southfield freeway exit ramp are familiar with Clayton Willis - a double amputee in his 60s who was often seen asking for money at the intersection.

    What would possess you to heckle a double amputee and then pull a gun on him and end up killing the both of you. He fought back with one hand.

      People robbing panhandlers isn't uncommon. Clayton, given his medical condition, probably got him more sympathy than you're "average" panhandler. So it got him more handouts as well as making him a target. More money + no legs = easy target.

    "I cannot understand how a veteran, who fought for our freedom, can be treated so poorly while down on his luck. This makes me so angry that I cannot even articulate my thoughts coherently. The vet deserves justice, and this situation makes no sense to me. If someone does not want to give, then they can simply keep their window up. Panhandlers are everywhere, and most are people who have fallen on hard times. Life can be tough, and they are simply trying to get back on their feet. To do something like this to someone who is already struggling is just wrong and frustrating." May God help us find justice for this man, who was also his child. He meant no harm to anyone but was a hero to so many as a veteran. Unfortunately, we never heard his story.

    • @willspann9894
      @willspann9894 8 месяцев назад +13

      There are reason/ways you can lose veteran benefits. For example if I, as a retired veteran of 20 years was to get a felony that resulted in jail time I could lose some if not all of my benefits. Also keep in mind veterans come in a lot of forms. For example you could serve 3 years and get dishonorable discharged. Now you are still technically a veteran buy you lose some benefits. Also if you didn't go through the V.A assessment prior to discharge, you won't receive anything. There are a lot of guys who just "get out" and don't get their medical assessments done and don't get a penny. You have to do the follow-up to ensure you get whatever you may deserve. As far as this guy goes, who knows what his situation was.

    It's really sad to know and live in a country that treats their veterans like this. To allow them to live on the streets and put their lives at risk again. And when they do band together and make themselves a little community you just come in and tear it up. Tell them to get lost. The majority of our homeless are people who have fought for our country, fought for us, and we treat them so poorly. I'm so ashamed. I'm so sorry for this man and the ones who knew and loved him. I find little solace in knowing the man who did this also died. Had he not he might not have been caught. I'd be curious to know his criminal history if they identify him, cause I'm pretty sure he has one. Two men might have died, but only one now walks with God.

    • @BologneyT
      @BologneyT 8 месяцев назад +2

      I don't think it's a majority of homeless... I heard it's officially a quarter of long term homeless are veterans... but maybe that's changed, and maybe it's just semantic, because that's way too much. We all think nothing of homeless people, even though a quarter of them (AT LEAST) are VETERANS, and many that aren't are actually employed and STILL homeless. When I used to work in fast food, no matter where I worked there was always at least one person working there that was clearly known to be homeless.
      The last sentence of your comment... poetic... I don't even know what else to say about it except it's truth. I'm just glad I scrolled to read it.

    This is so upsetting to me. I met him when I moved to Detroit a few years ago. He was regularly stationed at the Southfield Fwy and Grand River exit for years, my daily route home. When I would stop at the light, we would chat on occasion. That was when I learned his name, and a bit of his story. He was there every day, rain or shine. I was sad when he wasn't there any more and was worried that something had happened to him. But I was comforted when I drove by him at his newer location this past summer. That comfort was short-lived when I saw on the news he had been in a shooting, but I was relieved he was ok. Yesterday, I had the news playing in the background while I worked and heard that he had been involved in another shooting. It is heartbreaking that someone would do this to him. As a veteran, he deserved better. As a human, he deserved better. Rest peacefully, Clayton.

    This story is weird……Why is an amputee being targeted (twice now)?……How did both men get killed, especially with one not able to walk, and I assume NOT even get out of his chair, yet alone, struggle with someone?…..Sounds to me, like both men may have had firearms…..🤔🤔🤷🏽‍♂️

    He served our country so he could be treated worse than some convicted rapists. It’s disgraceful how the government treats veterans once they can’t help out in military service

    This the same guy i used to see down around Brightmoor, about 18 years ago? I've lived on the west side for years and remember a double leg amputee in a wheelchair around this area about 18yrs ago. But I haven't seen him in the last 3-5years.

    How is this how we let our veterans end up? How is this how we let our communities end up?
    All the money and all the power in all of history.
    And this goes on.
    Despicable on every level.

    He had both of his legs amputated because he was out in the winter weather panhandling. Drinking ,etc is why he didn't realize his legs were cold. I saw a White man who did not have any fingers. They said that frostbite happened to him. Must have been outside in winter weather, fingers got cold and had to be amputated.
