I don't know how UK citizens viewed JB's death; as a US citizen, it only bothered me because I so admired the work that Daniel Craig did in this role as the worldwide icon known to us all as James Bond. The way I have always seen Bond: resourcefulness, the cunning, the will to win, and his ability to fight to the death as depicted by Craig made it so easy to root for his portrayal of Bond as authentic because he did get the shit kicked out of him... as it is for us all in real life. Bond's life was a mess; job, love life, friendships, his ups and downs just came back to me as I watched it on the screen as real, even though it was all make believe, portrayed on film, acted out and scripted, Craig made it work. I didn't pretend to be looking at someone I felt a kinship with, I emotionally gave in and rendered my mental faculties moot because I connected and I wanted to root for this man on screen. Daniel Craig's work as James Bond can be loved or despised by the critics all day long, I don't care. It doesn't matter because Craig's work as Bond allowed me to freely choose a fictional character that I believed in: could have a drink with, smoke a cigar with, would actually care about enough to die for. I thoroughly enjoyed rooting and being emotional about Daniel Craig's portrayal of Bond. It just did not matter that it was all make-believe, I for one cared deeply about this actors work as the premier British "00"-spy, and if I could have interjected myself into any role, it would have been to protect this character and not let him die. It was as painful and as bittersweet a death to watch and handle on screen as it has been in my own life letting go loved one's and best friends when they too died. That's why in that fateful scene where Bond meets his demise, a small epiphany occurred, but I've known all along.
Alas, life is not fair, and top it off, we age and die... but damn it, not James Bond. Until Daniel Craig came to the front and was cast as the titular spy.
Well done Sir, you moved my thoughts, fanned my passions, allowed me to dream. Well done indeed Daniel Craig.

And when I read this I was listening to the music that this scene was playing oh say around 0:23 and as I began to read this, one single tear had shed from my left eye. As a British man, whom has seen every Bond film at least 3 times over, I'm not ashamed to admit that I cried my eyes out during the death scene, as well as when they played Louis Armstrong at the end. Not only because the story of James Bond is so beautiful, but also because all of the Bond films I ever watched was with a family member who was dear to me, so it meant something more to me than just a film. I personally think Craig is 2nd to Connery, and he has earned that position because of the sheer pureness of his acting.

The Daniel Craig Bond movies strung together make such a compelling story, and even though it feels gut wrenching that his Bond dies, it certainly does tie up the story line appropriately
His Bond, more than any of the others, felt the most human and the determined. There would never be a retirement for this Bond.

His one was more of a Batman reboot whereas the other ones are vaguely the same iteration. They also don't contradict each other so you can imagine Brosnan's Bond have having the same adventure as Lazenby etc. But Craig's was definitely a kind reboot and it's own self contained thing. But you could also just take Casino Royale and ignore the rest of it and treat that in a similar way to the previous ones.

      @JJBM60 Год назад +5

My thoughts exactly… people argued with me that I was wrong but I mean.. how else can you end a string of 5 films which are all connected and tell one big story?… I also saw it as a message to say that James bond as we know it is now gone, as in the classic character who seduces women half his age and stuff like that even though Craig’s bond didn’t do much of that compared to the others.. I’m curious about where they’re gonna go from here but I’m guessing it won’t be anything like the old films

    • @DnAwrestling1
      @DnAwrestling1 Год назад +9

@@JJBM60 James Bond is always going to be a sexist, womanizing piece of shit. To change that would be a disservice to the character and the producers know that. Instead, the films just won't frame it as casually as they used to. He'll likely start facing actual consequences for his mistreatment of women and/or actually grow as a person over the course of the films. And that's entirely for the best. Fleming's Bond was always flawed at his core, and that's a much more interesting way of approaching the character than the perfect superhero that every man wants to be of the older films.

@@henrykujawa4427 I tend to agree with your comments regarding both James Bond and Sherlock Holmes. As a boy, I read all the Bond books and all the Sherlock Holmes stories, both short and long. I never liked the way the Bond novels were theatricalised on screen; I would have also preferred them to be done in a TV series, much as you describe Douglas Wilmer's or Jeremy Brett's portrayal of Holmes. Daniel Craig is the only actor to my mind, who has come anywhere near portraying the James Bond of the original Fleming novels. The worst was Roger Moore by a long way; his pathetic comedy parody of Bond made me sick.
My guess is that there is no money to be made in this format, which is why they had to be dumbed down and made more visual with all the hi-tec and the explosions, etc etc. This way, they would be palatable to the masses, because the books and a TV series would be a much narrower market. Not forgetting all the merchandising over the years as well!
Adding the modern 'wokeness' to Bond is also a terrible mistake. No disrespect to Lashana Lynch, whose 007 character I quite enjoyed, but in the Bond books there were already plenty of tough independent women, and these books were written between 1952 and 1964. Think of Gala Brand, Tilly Masterson (a lesbian), Kissy Suzuki, Honeychile Rider, Vesper Lynd, Tiffany Case, and so on. They were all tough, independent women capable of surviving on their own, none of them needed a man. It was only Bond's own obvious misogyny which seems to offend some, but hey, it's a part of what makes him who he is.

And while I don’t want to get too carried away with the death as I’m sure some writer more talented than me can come up with a way to ‘resurect’ the character with an new actor, I’m gonna pretend that they killed him permanently, even though that would be the stupidest thing even in a film franchise with 26 movies already in 60 years. Part of what makes me think that they killed them for real permanently is that Amazon bought the rights to the bond franchise but don’t have any plans for a new movie, only a game show based on Bond. I agree with you that it was great that there were steaks with the Daniel Craig era, but I will say that after all the suffering that we saw this guy go through, couldn’t he just have a happy ending for once? To me, Casino Royale was the pinnacle, and ever other movie from there on out was pretty great with the even numbered ones being stinkers. But we saw this guy get put through so much punishment, absolute hell, a happy ending would’ve been nice. Then again, Daniel Craig insisted on it, and I think somebody egotistically, he didn’t want to just be replaced without even an explanation but another “James Bond,” which at the pre-Craig era had come to be seen as basically just a code name…

I literally bawled my eyes out, Craig is my favorite Bond and his story came together so well, the cast overall was always just perfect but to show the impact his death had on everyone meant so much - he gave so much of himself for these other people and even though it didn't seem like he cared, he did. He was so hurt inside and the drinking and subtle flirtatious-ness was part of his coping process (man they really wrote his life so well). The best part, but also the worst, is that he died happy, knowing he had actually finally found a true love and something worth actually going out for, his daughter, man... just amazing. I will miss Daniel Craig's Bond for the rest of my life, impacted me majorly.

But let's be real, the James Bond phenomenon reached fever pitch during Sean Connery's tenure. When the original movies came out, nobody had ever seen anything like them before. It's easy to dismiss their significance now in light of the 60 years of cinema we've had since they premiered, but those movies really were revolutionary for their time. In the modern movie landscape, Daniel Craig's 007 movies are just another big movie franchise that is popular with audiences, one amongst many. It has the advantage of appealing to modern sensibilities, but they lack the cultural impact of those original Connery movies.

So you'd see the island blow up then in the next scene you see madeline and her daughter find the doll with a figure watching from a far. I am so glad they didn't do this ending and committed to killing Bond because it works perfectly with Daniel Craig's version of Bond and it makes for brilliant arc from Casino Royale of man getting his heart broken to No Time To Die where in his final moments he fixes it.

it’s really tough for me to decide between the theatrical ending and this one.
in defense of the theatrical ending:
-he cannot have physical contact with anyone including his new family
-he can finally see his true love Vesper in the afterlife
-by choosing death, he may have prolonged the life of his new family since everyone who’s ever gotten close to him has died

-it doesn’t make sense for him to be killed off since he finally has a family and reason to continue on living

To stand when no one else would,
To fall and then to come back,
To be our light in the dark,
Who answered the call when others were silent,
The silent hero who fought in the shadows, to fight the horrors we could never imagine,

Bond is blown 100s of meters off of a mountain yet remains uninjured; lands gently in the sea, which is for some reason on fire; pops up next to a life raft (which was what, blown off of the mountain with him?); paddles to land; returns to London undetected even my MI6. If I was given a choice between giving my life for my family, knowing they are safe versus surviving and living, knowing you will never be able to be with them. If they actually end the franchise and don't make anymore movies, then I'm fine with it.
If not, then I don't like the ending because that's the hole point of the entire franchise, James Bond has unlimited lives, that's just part of what makes him James Bond, you just can't take the guy out no matter what.
Me, I would have ended the movie like this, he realizes he's been infected, so he can't go back to his girl and his daughter, so he dives into the ocean or somehow figures out how to escape the missile hits.
Screen goes blank, then the next time it comes up you see bond sitting in a chair, under a spotlight, screen says at the top, "Location unknown", then we hear a faceless voice say, "So, Mr. Bond, it would seem that you have something incurable"
"Well not to worry Mr. Bond, that's our specialty, curing the incurable"......
Then bam, James Bond melody hits, then closing credits start......
That way it's left open ended, we don't know if he's cured and can go back to his family or not, but at least we know he cheated death once again, because that's just what James Bond is all about...

Overall, scene goes as it goes in the original, Safin infects Bond with nanomachines that would attack Bond's daughter and Madlen, and Bond stays to receive missile fire on Safin lab. Team drinks to honor his sacrifice and Madlen drives with her daughter in tunnel.
But there is another scene starts, much like the first one in the movie. Said scientist found a new work in the secret lab, and said secret lab getting infiltrated by unknown perps, perps moves swiflty as not as lethally as Safin's. They found the same scientist and extract him, before lab is locked down. Perps tearing down their masks, scientist look at the face of perp, holding him, and we saw a terrified look at his face, he whispers:
"But you supposed to be dead?!"
Camera aims high to reveal to viewer perp's face, revealing it to be Bond's.
    Bond smirks, and states:
"I have a busy schedule. No time to die."
    Roll credits.
Overall ending is supposed to be hopeful and open - that scientist captured by Bond and his team to develop a cure against a nanomachines Safin injected into Bond.

Would have been nice if that was the true ending. But I think that, like Connery's Bond, Craig's bond was an intense man and that can only go so far as, emotionally, the character must be fairly limited i.e. pretty dark most of the time. After Connery came Roger Moore (passing over Lanzenby) and he gave us a more upbeat, stylish, English gentleman type of Bond which was a good idea as it revitalized the character. I think that after Craig either Henry Cavill or Tom Hardy would make excellent Bonds at this time as both can portray stylish, witty, charismatic characters yet make great action heroes. Tom Hardy's character in Inception was very Bond like and Henry Cavill of course would get to play both James Bond as well as Napoleon Solo. I'd be happy with either. It needs someone with 'presence' and style and both of these actors have it.
