  • Committed blood donors help to ensure patients facing cancer, sickle cell disease, undergoing surgeries and new moms following difficult childbirths, all have access to lifesaving blood products without delay. American Red Cross blood donors share why it’s important for them to donate blood and how this gratifying act positively impacts their community.

My mother is African American and my father is from East Africa(Kenya) and I along with my identical twin sister and younger sister signed up to donate blood and we just cancelled our appointment once we read the history of the Red Cross. They didn’t want black blood then so they don’t want or will NEVER get my blood now.

I would LOVE to donate blood, but since I'm gay, here in the US they don't allow me to, unless I abstain from s** for at least 3 months. In 2020 when I first got COVID-19 pre-vaccine, I wanted to donate plasma, since it was very encouraged for COVID-19 survivors to do it for the antibody treatment on other patients, but I was still not allowed to due to my sexuality. Oh well, I guess stigmas and stereotypes are more important than helping people🙃

We agree that blood donation eligibility shouldn’t be determined by sexual orientation and are committed to working toward achieving this goal. Learn more: www.RedCrossBlood.org/LGBTQ

In Germany it's also not allowed. I'm not gay so I can donate blood and everytime I go and fill out the checklist I get mad about this. There are not enough blood donors and we are just gonna exclude a whole group of potential donors. It's just sad that it's still not changed despite all experts saying it should be.
