- Donating plasma is similar to donating blood. Only the plasma portion of your blood is collected; the other components (red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets) are returned to you. Watch our video to get a firsthand look at the plasma donor experience.
I gave blood once in high school and a bad experience and even passed out so I have been scared to donate blood / plasma but ! this video really helped ease my worries because they showed the whole process! thank u
That happened to me too, wanted to skip class and donate blood only to pass out lol. I've been donating blood for the past 3 years every 2 months. I now donate plasma regularly. GO DO IT!!

Hey how did it feel? Did it hurt? I am considering donating and am afraid of the needle. I heard it feels like a normal shot when the needle goes in. Is that true?
@@E55666 I’m a different person replying, but yes, sometimes the plasma donation even hurts less than a shot. It does vary slightly. After it’s in the pain stops. Basically, it’s like if you pinch your arm with your fingernail for a second. Best wishes! 👍🏼

Donated plasma yesterday. The donation centre I go to is AMAZING. The staff, volunteers, the entire process is an amazing experience. It’s something I feel very privileged to be able to do.❤ I also am glad you do phone call or email reminders as life can get busy and I tend to forget.

Donating blood is really draining to your system but donation plasma isn't.
in recent covid pandemic, the plasma transfer / donation from the recovered covid patient COULD help sick Covid patient ,

I have plasma today for the first time. I have sever anxiety and PTSD so it didn't help. But your body will feel like your freezing and also you will feel as if you are feeling slow on reaction time. After the process was over I did grab something to eat but I was very sick and tired after giving plasma so all and all not to bed

This would be great if there were actually a good amount of plasma donation centres. I’m confused as to why we buy 80% of our plasma supply from paid donors in the US, yet we don’t make any efforts towards getting plasma from Canadians. Either open way more free plasma clinics or pay donors for their plasma!!! That way we can acquire our plasma from Canadians rather than outsourcing it which isn’t 100% reliable.
As the national blood authority, we are responsible for ensuring a safe and secure supply of blood and blood products for patients in Canada (except in Quebec, where Héma-Québec is the blood operator).
We collect blood, plasma and platelets from volunteer donors across the country. These donations meet all (100 per cent) of Canadian hospital demand for transfusion, meaning that all of the blood components (red blood cells, plasma and platelets) transfused into patients in Canada are collected at our donor centres from volunteer donors in Canada.
We do not import or export any blood products, except for patients who have rare blood, where only 1 person out of 500 may be a compatible donor. For these patients, we may work with international blood operators to find a match.

I always donate whole blood. Maybe after my next WB donation in 2 weeks I'll look into booking a plasma donation.

As someone with AB+ blood, I've heard that plasma donations are more useful for those with my blood type to donate than whole blood. I want to double check though, should I be booking a plasma donation or a whole blood one as my next appointment?

Id love to donate plasma but Id have to commute to either London or Brampton since I live in Waterloo. Since I dont have a car thatll be a 3 hour commute one way.
I believe you should open up far more plasma clinics. If you have shortages it doesnt help that many people cant even reach you. Just my 2 cents though.
Hello, With funding from governments, Canadian Blood Services is collecting more plasma by opening 11 new plasma donor centres by 2024 (we’ve opened several of these centres already) and enhancing our plasma collection programs at our blood donor centres.

We don't sell these medical treatments to patients; we provide them to health-care centres at no cost to patients. We collect plasma through two processes:
We separate plasma from a whole blood donation after you donate. The plasma we collect in this way is called “recovered plasma.”
We also collect plasma through a process called apheresis. In this process, we separate the plasma from your blood during the donation process and return the other components of your blood to your body through the same needle.

In other words, you'll get your blood back, just without the plasma. You also get saline that gives you a funny taste in your mouth, if you've ever had a surgery, or been in the hospital, you should have had a saline injection through your IV line.

Can a diabetic patient donate plasma?
Donor health is a priority for us, and our eligibility requirements ensure that every blood donation is a safe experience for donors.
If a person with type 2 diabetes manages their diabetes with insulin, they may be eligible to donate, as long as they are on a stable dose of insulin and have had no recent episodes of hypoglycemia (i.e. in the month before the donation).
People with type 1 diabetes are not eligible to donate blood.

The donation process is much like whole blood donation, but differs in that a centrifuge device is used to separate the plasma from the rest of the whole blood components. We collect only the plasma and the rest of the blood is returned to your body all during the same process. It only takes about 20 minutes longer than a whole blood donation. Since the blood is returned to the donor’s body and only the plasma is taken, donors are able to give plasma more frequently. Men are able to donate every week, and women are able to give every two weeks.
The demand for plasma is increasing, and just like with blood donation, a plasma donation will help a patient in need in Canada. We value all donors and are thankful for whatever contribution they choose to make.

What’s the difference of donating blood and plasma? If I donate blood they can separate the plasma later right?

Donating plasma is a little different from donating whole blood. When you donate whole blood, it goes straight into a collection bag and is later separated in a lab. When you donate plasma, the blood that's drawn from your arm goes through a special machine to separate the different parts of your blood.
Plasma is collected through a process call plasmapheresis and is conducted in cycles that may take up to an hour. Whole blood is drawn.
Every donation that helps save lives is valuable. Blood is just as important as plasma. We appreciate your generosity and commitment in whatever form you’re able to give.

I am afraid of needles myself and find it anxiety inducing everytime I go, but to be honest, its really not that bad. It is a larger needle but its just like the finger prick. Its not really painful at all. :) Once you've done it a couple times its so easy.
i just visited CBS centre for whole blood donation and i was not sure about Malaira history but as per my light memory i got something like that, when i was child and the thing is neither me nor my parent remember now. so do you have any specific test to check whether i had malaira in past or not?

What card are they scanning?
That is a donor card! After your first appointment donating blood or plasma, it will be mailed out to you for easy registration at future appointments. It carries all necessary health info in relation to donating blood/plasma.

The process for donating source plasma is simple.
Before donating plasma, you will complete a similar screening process as for whole-blood donors.
Your blood will be drawn through a needle in your arm. The blood will pass through a centrifuge that separates your plasma. Then, it returns the rest of your blood to you through the same needle.
Plan for about 75 minutes to complete your plasma donation.

They are taking your time and body fluids they least they can do is cut you 25% of the profits. These plasma places are not part of the hospital they just sell the plasma to them

We have always collected plasma which we ship to fractionators who manufacture it on our behalf into plasma protein products for use exclusively in Canada. Once manufactured, these medications are licensed by Health Canada as biological drugs and returned to Canadian Blood Services for shipping to the hospitals and clinics we serve.
The agreement ensures plasma collected in Canada is made into immunoglobulins in Canada for patients here - an approach aimed at reducing Canada’s reliance on the global market in the long term. Specifically, the agreement ensures none of the plasma collected in Canada or the immunoglobulins manufactured from that plasma by Grifols can be sold or shipped offshore. As is the practice today, this agreement is premised on Canadian Blood Services procuring finished immunoglobulins, in this case made specifically from domestically collected plasma. We will not be purchasing raw plasma.
