Giving Blood & Benefits For The Donor

  • Dr. Klaper provides medical education on Donating Blood. Giving blood can be the gift of life, but are there possible benefits to the donor? Blood donation alone is needed now more than ever. Additionally, it can in fact have benefits for the donor. Giving blood can lower the incidence of cancer. Stored iron or iron overload in the blood can cause tissue damage in cells and lead to a malignant change. Donating blood can reduce iron overload.
    Question: I know that donating blood is a good thing to do but are there any specific health benefits for the donor?

    Wow...I just got back from donating here in Naples, FL....am a frequent donor....and I always feel so WELL afterwards! I've been donating for some years now...and have never been turned away...they screen for low iron or high bp. I've heard that out of all of those who CAN donate, only 3% DO donate...one of the technicians told me that the last time I donated...I donate every 70 days.

    Most dietary iron comes from added iron in processed foods not red meat!

    I think giving blood is great and I have many times. I wonder though, now that I'm 70 (but very healthy) if there's any loss of immunity or another other danger? Probably not, just asking.

    I’ve been following a wfpd diet for about 10 years and vegan for close to 30 years. My iron levels were always great. I donate blood 3-4 times a year for the last 5 years. Recently I was diagnosed as slightly anemic. I know the iron tricks…citrus with greens or beans for absorption but when tested again, same thing, slightly anemic. I took iron supplements and I’m back to a healthy level. I’m wondering if I should take an iron supplement a couple times a week to make sure I don’t become anemic. I love being able to donate blood. Will this be problematic long term to supplement occasionally? Thanks!!

    What about pre menopausal women on a vegan diet? Do they risk a low iron status by donating blood?

  • @Chris-yo3cl
    @Chris-yo3cl 11 месяцев назад +1

    So giving blood once a yr doesn't lower your risk of a heart attack by 88%? I've read that it does in several studies.

    i disagree for the second time with you. Fixing the limits makes me keep on going with longevity. Healthy narcism makes impossible to me to give away bloody immune system in these days. I cant believe you think the contrary.

    I stopped donating blood after the American Red Cross wasted millions of blood units immediately following 9/11 in 2001, when they accepted millions of immediate donations instead of scheduling them out over many months.

    I am an ethical vegan that cares about reducing harm and exploitation of sentient beings. I would never donate blood in the current system because my blood would be used to save the life of a person who would increase suffering and exploitation of sentient beings. I would donate blood if there was a guarantee the blood would be used for another vegan only. If anyone is an ethical vegan, I would encourage you not to donate blood.

      So you want non vegan people to die?
      Do you view the deaths of non vegan people beneficial?
      I don't judge you at all, there is some logic behind that but is that the message you're trying to send?
