Diverticulosis is caused by outpouching of the colonic mucosa and submucosa which can lead to painless bright red blood per rectum with bowel movements in patients with poor eating habits such as low fiber diet and high fatty foods.
Diverticulitis is inflammation of a diverticular.

My mum had Diverticulitis that ending in her perfecting and having emergency an opertion. she was in intensive care for 18 days and we were told to expect the worse. It was very scary and we did not understand what was going. Thankfully she was stronger than they thought and a year later she still has the colostomy bag as they don't want to operate on her again as she is nearly 80. I want to thank you for explaining what happened to her. you made it very clear. Thank you x

I was just diagnosed 2 weeks ago with mild Diverticulosis after a colonoscopy. This video has explained to me as a patient to truly understand where I'm at with this disease. Fiber, fruits and veggies and avoiding junk food will be my savior from getting into complications. Thanks for this great explanation it was very detailed and straight to the point.

I was diagnosed with this condition last week, and this video really helped me understand what was going on in my body. I'm 29 years old, and I really did not expect this diagnosis. But it's nice to have a great explanation of what is going on in my belly :)

I just came back from the doctor diagnosed with diverticulitis and had NO idea exactly what that was! I was having strong pains in the lower left side getting worse everyday and I was having flu like symptoms simultaneously. But, thanks to you, I now totally understand. THANK YOU SO MUCH for explaining this in layman's terms and also adding the "poop" humor! You are an excellent teacher and I will come to YOUR class anytime. Thanks for the help!

@ae357em Let me give you some advice since i have had 2 feet of my Colon removed from severe Diverticulitis. It took about a year or 2 from when i was diagnosed till the flare up, and i mean a flare up so bad i could not move. It felt like the left side of my abdomen had been lit with a match and the pain was so bad that it caused shortness of breath. The next time you start to have left sided pain more often, you need to get a Colonoscopy set up. A colonoscopy will not on reveal any signs of polyps, but will also show the severity of your Diverticulosis. If anything needs to be done then your Dr will let you know. If you have a flare up then you need to get to your Dr as soon as you can. This is serious stuff and the last thing you want to do is to not be aware of the situation.

Awesome lecture. It's put my mind to rest. The first attack I fainted from pain or whatever. I am happy to know under what circumstances to head for emerg. I tend to put these things off because I don't want to look like a panic case and take up valuable physician time if I am just being a sissy. Dad always said...rub some dirt on it and walk it off. PS....you have great charisma.

There are actually kids that have diverticulitis. And the cause might be something else, maybe food intolerancе, gluten sencetivety, which is most likely caused by vaccines or antibiotics.

This is a great lecture, although In some cases people have no choice but to switch to a low fiber diet,
fiber irritates my ulcerative colitis causing severe diarrhea and colon irritation although recently I developed diverticulitis as a result.
I hope there is a cure for these illnesses someday

How to treat Diverticulosis. Just to wait for bleeding stop? What about the formed pouches? Will they shrink once take the fiber diet? Will that finally become Diverticulits if not treated?

  • @sonicstep

01:48 sounds like barbecue once a week, not bowl movement. Anyhow, this answered my question, it's due to a poor diet as opposed to something that's not obviously preventable. Since my diet is in order, I've apparently nothing to worry about with regard to this so called disease. Thanks!

I was diagnosed with diverticulitis because I was having severe diarrhea. I was going to the bathroom about 10x per day with it. They gave me a colonoscopy and found the diverticulitis. I had been constipated for about 15 years and I guess that is what gave me the diverticulosis. My meaning is that you never mentioned diarrhea so I am wondering if this is not a frequent symptom of diverticulitis/diverticulosis?

I was 24 y/o when I found out I had Diverticulosis. I have had a few spouts of blood it the toilet and had my 1st Colonoscopy when I was 24 y/o. My family has a nasty GI line with Colitis, IBS and Diverticulosis. I'm now 26 y/o and the past 2 days I have been having sharp, crampy pain in my lower left side and into the pelvic area. I have also been having diarrhea and nausea. I have no fever and no bleeding. Have thoughts that I should go to the ER since I can't get into the GI doctor for 3 days.

I was actually diagnosed with endo also. I also had a bunch of ovarian cysts. I have had so many surgeries over the past 3 years....gall bladder removal, appendix removal, hysterectomy, scopes, ect. It has sucked a lot. The GI doctor thinks I may have Colitis besides the Diverticulosis.

Your definitions at the start are incorrect. Diverticulosis is simply the presence of pseudodiverticulae, it becomes diverticular disease when any signs or symptoms appear; in 80% of cases, diverticulosis is totally asymptomatic.
Also, for completeness' sake I wish that you had mentioned other risk factors for developing DD (e.g. chronic NSAID use), the Hinchey classification, and other complications of diverticulitis (fistulae, post-inflammatory strictures).
Otherwise it was very well done.

Put her on a gluten free diet. Take out the seeds from tomatoes and cucumbers, put all berries with seed s through a seve , avoid fresh milk products, fried food . Make fresh carrot juice every day. Cook oats, rice and buckwheat and root vegetables. May that will help.

"A high fiber diet is broadly recommended for the prevention of diverticular disease based on unconfirmed, unproven, untested, and speculative "theories" that a low fiber diet causes this pathology. In fact, it's the complete opposite - a high fiber diet is the primary cause of diverticular disease and related complications."- Read why on gutsense.org

Hey ftplectures, you should be more careful about hte words you are using. DIVERTICULOSIS is defined by the presence of diverticula... If a diverticula ruptures, then you will have the symptoms of blood in stools, anemia, etc... Anyway, good video, thanks.

    • @amagrace2826

80% of diverticulosis are asymptomatic; that means 20% are symptomatic with symptoms such as LLQ pain, bloody stool, change of bowel habits, etc.
