Mesenteric ischemia is a medical condition in which inflammation and injury of the small intestine result from inadequate blood supply. Causes of the reduced blood flow can include changes in the systemic circulation (e.g. low blood pressure) or local factors such as constriction of blood vessels or a blood clot. It is more common in the elderly

Very informative. I recently had open heart surgery for a mitral valve repair. I'm feeling pain and tightness in my abdominal area just below the middle of my ribs towards the navel. It hurts most when I'm moving but not consistently. When it's hurting my legs feel weakened like lactic acid is in the area of my knees. I've told my cardiologist about it and my surgeon. They don't seem to be too worried about I. I'm going to start raising the level of my complaint about this with my cardiologist. Thanks for this type of information.

Of all videos on this topic, I find this explanation of the condition to be exceptional. Thank you so much for the helpful information. I now know what to expect and what to ask when I go back to my doctor.

I had this happen to me... I'm 23yrs old female. Hospital didn't believe me and said I was faking my symptoms because the CT scan showed nothing wrong so they told me i was faking my pain because I wanted drugs. I don't even take Tylenol and I eat all organic...almost 24hrs later I got worse and worse and they did an exploratory laparotomy and found necrotic small bowel. 75cm. My fault for going to a community hospital the emergency room really screwed up bad. I'm now 7weeks post op. Hopefully no more complications :\

It may be worth mentioning that I had my appendix taken out first, it was laparoscopic appendectomy procedure. Then 3 weeks later I had the exploratory laparotomy. Not sure if the first surgery caused it or not, doctors said no and still don't have an answer for me as to how this happened. Oh well lol that's life I guess

Just want to say your not alone in that an i hope your doin well .. most doctors are not trained for this an an just pass the buck .. same thing happened with myself over a 3 month period back in 2018 went to my local A+E over 5 times, an yet still would not scan me .. 3 months after.. 3 laparotomys removing over half of my small bowell i was diagnosed with SMA all because some dickhead decided to over looked my diagnosis . i can only hope you dont go through the similar complications as myself as its been a rough road since. i wish you well 🙌

Awesome lecture. Is it possible a patient might have this without any abdominal pain and without blood in the stool, just intractable nausea after eating, after ruling properly ruling out things like gastroparesis and gall bladder (after doing an emptying study, and gall bladder tests)? In other words, just with nausea, vomitting, weightloss, and high WBC counts? Thanks.

Yup I had it happen to me. I'm 23. Constant vomiting, severe abdominal pain, normal WBC and vitals. Hours went by and starting vomiting blood, and my WBC was still normal, vitals were normal but pain kept getting worse. Hours keep passing and all of a sudden my WBC shot up to 35.5 and my heart rate went to 150's, Had an exploratory laparotomy and found nectrotic small bowel of the terminal ileum. 75cm.
