      As someone who did theatre, Shakespeare loved to dabble in comedy, satire, drama or all at the same time in his work. And Romeo and Juliet was no exception. It started as a comedy, then became a drama, mix with action and end the play with a tragedy.

    There was a hilarious rift in a Shakespeare class in college over this one. The Creative Writing/Literary students hated it, and the Theater students loved it. Led to some legit Montague/Capulet style factionalism.

    I watched this movie for a film studies class (we were comparing “old” Shakespeare remakes to “modern” ones) and I remember my teacher being sooo excited for this version. He was HYPED over Baz Lurman’s work in this movie and how camp it is but how every detail is perfectly placed.
    Something I remember him pointing out and made me enjoy the campiness even more:
    The zooming into the TV with the news woman is meant to be like a gateway/portal into that TV world. And you’re trapped in THAT world setting with all the bold colours, odd way of speaking, violence but without any hint of reality. Until the movie is done and we zoom out. Then we’re released back into regular life.
    I know I did a bad job explaining what he meant but it makes sense in my head lol.
    This is one of my favourite movies, guilty pleasure or not. The CAMP cannot be matched 😂❤

    I think this movie's interpretation actually makes the "love at first sight" scene more believable. Basically, Romeo taking molly makes him so horny he'll screw anything that moves, and Juliet is so naive she'll fall for any man who would make a move. She interprets his lack of self-control as confidence, and he interprets her thirst for intimacy as the heavens pulling her toward him. But once they get intimate enough, their reasons for choosing each other no longer seem to matter.

  • @agenttheater5
    @agenttheater5 8 месяцев назад +9

    15:05 So glad someone else picked up on that. This line and her later line about how the suddenness of their love frightens her, saying that it is "too like the lightning that doth cease to strike ere one says 'it lightens'". She knows this isn't how love is supposed to go. She knows it's too sudden. But she loves him in spite knowing that.
    She's not an idiot. Throughout this scene she's at least trying to keep her head.
    That's something Shakespeare does a lot - people fall in love at first sight and either question it or other question in (in the case of 'As You Like It' questioning it and then falling in love at first sight as well) but they don't doubt it or fall out of love - they go with it.

    13:00 there is never an explicit age given for Romeo. The assumption that is older comes from a) the stage actors being 16-18. By that same logic, the film Grease has a lot of explaining to do. b) Romeo wanting to court Rosalind ( more common for an older age) but his actions are expected for a play about kids rushing into their choices while adults are slow for any change. c) people wanting to be a contrarian and find a reason to dislike a classic. Luckily the last is the least common. I hope this helps ❤

    • @agenttheater5
      @agenttheater5 8 месяцев назад +2

      I wouldn't necessarily say this play says that adults are slow for the change.
      We're not sure about Paris's age but his response to Capulet being unsure if his daughter was too young to be married was to point out "plenty of other girls got married when they were younger than her and they're pretty happy" (always remembered that line because in the Zeffirelli movie Paris said that line then we look across the Courtyard to lady Capulet - at least ten years younger than her husband, still beautiful, and clearly not happy).
      Then later we have Capulet spontaneously deciding that the best way to cheer Juliet up after Tybalts death is to get her married to Paris in 3 days.
      Then we have Capulet flying into a rage and threatening to disinherit Juliet if she refuses the marriage and even saying that he used to thank God that he left them one child and now sees that God left them one child too much (words to that effect).
      And there's Paris mentioning that Capulet decided to move the wedding up a day.
      And there's Montague seeing all these young men jumping in for the fight at the beginning and trying to jump into the fight himself, only not joining in because his wife holds him back - in fact Capulet originally does that as well, jury's out on whether Lady Capulet is trying g to hold him back or is just mocking him when she says "A crutch a crutch! Why call you for a sword".
      And then there's Friar Laurence criticising Romeo for changing his affections so quickly and then deciding to marry them in spite of knowing how recently them met.
      And then speaking of Friar Laurence - whose idea was that crazy fake death plan in the first place? Who was in charge of getting the letter to Romeo? Who didn't get there in time? Who (in the original play) left her in the tomb?
      The adults in the play talk about slow change, being cautious, and being careful about rushing into things. And then they go ahead and rush into spontaneous ideas without real plans anyway. That's the difference between the youth and the adults in this play.

    As much as I love Marvel movies, the MCU has truly altered the modern cinematic landscape, and not for the better. It's ushered in an era of blockbusters. Studios aren't interested in making smaller films anymore, they want the massive returns that come with those franchises. It used to be that the hollywood economy was centered around celebrities.
    It was stars who got "butts in seats". People were excited to see the new DiCaprio film, or the new Cruise film, or the new Hoffman film. Now that franchises have replaced actors in the hearts of the movie going public, the smaller star-driven content we used to get has mostly disappeared.
    In 1988, the highest grossing movie of the year was Rain Man, a movie about a guy and his autistic brother on a road trip. Can you imagine a movie like Rain Man being the highest grossing movie of the year now? It would never happen. There's no explosions, no incredible special effects, no pre-existing franchise. Just a simple drama with two major celebrities. It's a bummer that those days are behind us.

    • @SophiaPhannn
      @SophiaPhannn  8 месяцев назад +1

      I agree with the whole MCU ruining cinema thing. BUT i would argue that nowadays, more lesser known actors are able to work on meaningful projects based off of acting talent. I actually prefer the variability of seeing different kinds of actors as opposed to a handful of very famous actors who may or may not be that talented 🫢

    • @nonoeee
      @nonoeee 8 месяцев назад

      i feel like people use MCU as a scape goat. Yes MCU has ushered in an era of blockbusters but the film industry has changed beyond that. Studios want to make movies that give them the most money, movies that are streamable and rake in a lot more profit (that isn't the MCUs doing).
      On the other hand it's actually good we don't only get to watch the big A list celebrities in movies. It allows a lot more variety as well as inclusivity cus we all know is they still did that a lot more black poc and queer actors wouldn't stand a chance. We get to watch so much more, so much variety and what's wrong with that?
      I'd argue that the movies we get these days has more small star driven content it's only the quality of the movies that has changed. And cus we've been so exposed to great big mindbkowing stuff we always expect our movies to be great & mindblowing all the time which is our fault. We've all been playing a hand in the change of the film industry.
      It's a bit more nuanced than blaming the Mcu cus who's even watching it that much post endgame?

    I was in my early 20s when this movie originally was released, so it will always hold a special place in my heart. I'm so glad you enjoyed it, too! A couple of interesting tidbits I recall from back then...Baz Lurhmann wanted this more modern version to not only be easier to understand but to also be a commentary on the gang violence that was so pervasive at the time--especially in some areas of America (think Los Angeles). Another cool thing is that James Cameron basically cast DiCaprio for Titanic off the Dailies for R & J which is kinda amazing when you consider how different Romeo and Jack are.
    I think they're different...Romeo is more brooding while Jack is more sure of himself. Jack is also a bit older and has had time to mature into manhood as well. Also, Romeo is running around wearing Prada while Jack is a third-class passenger lucky to have made it onboard the ship. Do you see what I mean? They're different, but directors know what they are looking for, and DiCaprio excelled in both roles!
    And for the record, the 80s and 90s were awesome! I'm so glad to see so many going back and enjoying the music and movies of that time. Have fun, and I look forward to seeing more of your reactions in the future! 🙏💜

    Well interestingly the original choice for Juliet was Natalie Portman and she, at the time, was about 13/14 years old. They were trying to stay faithful to the ages in the play. But when they tested it it didn’t look right DiCaprio/Portman. So they took another route and got Claire Danes.

    You probably never heard about this, but apparently behind the scenes, while Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes, look like they’re in love with each other throughout the movie, in real life they didn’t. They NEVER got along well onset, even according to some interviews, each of them starting to complain about how each one of them started something leading to them to fight.
    Which considering how this is the only movie they starred in together, yet they still offered Claire to play Rose for Titanic, the year after this movie came out, I think it’s a good thing that they never saw each other again.

    Age gap: Claire Danes was 16. Leo was 21. In fact, Natalie Portman was 13 during casting and had been considered but when she auditioned with Leo it was way too obvious it looked like a grown man with a child.
    Also, I adored Claire Danes' portrayal as Juliet. She played angsty teen girl perfectly. A little shy and sheltered at first but she goes all out drama when she meets Romeo.

      @@SophiaPhannn Please please please! Do all of Kenneth Branagh's Shakepespeare movies! They're mostly the comedies:
      Much Ado About Nothing (1993)
      Love's Labours Lost (2000 - Shakespeare and 30s musical numbers, what more could we ask for)
      As You Like it (2006 - no reason for it to be set in Japan but then again there was no reason for the original play to be set France, and at least they give us a reason WHY basically none of the cast in a Japanese setting is actually Japanese).
      And there's only one history (Henry V from 1989) and one tragedy (Hamlet from 1997 - ok that one's four hours because they didn't cut any of the script so it might be better for two nights).
      I have other recommendations/pleas/requests but I'll leave them for now - give you time to catch up on your watch list).

    As a teenager I thought this was silly & felt like they were trying to pander to the "fellow children."

    when u mentioned why didn’t somebody just go and tell romeo the plan it made me think how in the play that’s how it was supposed to happen like a friar is supposed to hand deliver the letter but he gets quarantined in somebody’s house cause there’s a plague going on and nobody would let him out 😭 so he’s late to give romeo the news. i guess they wanted the reason to be more plausible for the 90s lol (although if it was made in 2020…)

    Holy cow, my boyfriend and I watched this movie just last week and we were dying laughing at the over-the-top directing and acting. I’m not sure Baz Luhrman is really our taste, and the Shakespeare doesn’t really sound natural coming out of Leo and Claire’s mouths, but I do have to appreciate Baz sticking to a vision.

    28:15 I didn't like her cry at first, but after watching it again, I really do. The way Juliet sees Romeo die and her first instinct is to look around, like she expects someone else to tall her that this is not real or what she should do, and then she cries like a child. Because she is a child. This just remind me instantly that she is 14.

    Comic book fans of The Bard should also check out the graphic novel 'Prince of Cats' by Ronald Wimberly. It's from the perspective of Tybalt and the Capulet Boys, but reimagined in an alternative 1980's New York that's heavy in samurai culture and graffiti gangs. At one time Spike Lee was interested in directing the adaption. Really good read and with a totally new script written entirely in faithful Shakespearean rhyme.

    Love at first sight happens! The only catch is both of you need to be at least a 7 in looks. Happened few times in my life. The first time was in high schoo. I was a transfer student and came in around November. Anyways on the first or second day, after getting out of class, i was walking down the hallway and from a distance i saw her walking towards my direction. And she saw me and we both locked eyes as we were walking towards each other. She looked like a princess, a true cinderella. Blonde hair, milky white skin, 8 face, conservatively dressed and just youthful and full of good vibe. We smiled at each other as we passed each other. It was surreal and felt like time froze and everything around us was dark and only both us existed. Will never forget it.

    I read the book when I was 12 I saw every movie ever made of the book but this remains my top favorite. Especially for Harold Perrineau's Mercutio and John Leguizamo's Tybalt. Those two for me stole the show from the main protagonists! Also the fact that they used the original dialogue in the modern setting was amazing and frankly genius.

Plus, the actors for the main roles are very well chosen. And looking at the young DiCaprio, I understand how wonderful youth is😂
