Honda Civic with Faded and Oxidized Paint and Clear Coat Failure

- The Honda Civic featured in this video has extreme clear coat failure and was considered to be beyond hope other than an expensive repainting.
In this video, the surface was GENTLY and lightly sanded with 1500 grit wet and dry sandpaper and plenty of water to remove the flaking clear coat. After sanding and rinsing to remove any residues, a single coat of emulsion was applied, followed by a second coat 3 days later. The vehicle sold quickly after treatment and was no longer available for additional post application long term photos.
The before and after results are amazing. The peeling clear coat and faded paint are no longer visible to the casual observer. Maybe the results are not as good as repainting the car, but have been achieved in a simple DIY operation at a fraction of the cost.
L’Oxide is produced in the USA and more information is available at www.oxideoff.com.
Everyone, this is a temporary fix, you'd have to redo it again in a few months. Video should have mentioned it.
you are correct, only good for selling the car wont last
one night stand baby
I bought this product it only temporary it lasted 2 weeks on my truck
so what’s a permanent fix
@@Alyssa-md3cs getting it painted
I have a 04 dark blue civic with the same clear coat oxidation. I talked to an owner of an autobody shop and he said that generation of civics that were built in Canada all have premature clear coat failure. Defective item that Honda won't address.
Bubblebath ::o you should be thankful that car already last you 12 years!
Bubblebath ::o I have a 1994 Toyota pickup. Looks bad on the hood and roof. Not worth good repainted, but don't want a cheapie repainted as those seem to look worse. I'm interested in this as doing every 6 months doesn't look hard and would make the truck 100% better. If you do yours, share some pics
Carlos Arias that's why I'll never buy another Honda. Shame on them for not acknowledging
I also have a Toyota Corolla with this problem. Toyota will address this on Avensis and Auris but not Corollas because there are probably too many of them.
The reason for the clear coat to come off is because you have to have a certain window between painting the car to add the clear coat so it can stick properly to the cars, I have found that most mass produced cars will have clear coat peeling as they rushed to get them out the factory and didn't take the right steps
I got an 04 civic with a little clear coat failure so I gotta cop some of that stuff. it's magic
Better get some 2k clearcoat, a 1000grit sandpaper and a polisher if u wanna do a proper job
@@nourizakaria642 hi my sis give her old car to my son and it looks just like that. What is a polisher?
@@Cutie2128 it takes imperfections out of clear coat. But if you don’t have any then there’s no point.
@@gabrielgonsoulin8150 Can you recommend a brand so I can go buy it? There is a polisher for everything, nail polish for example
@@Cutie2128 if it looks like that it a polish can’t save it. It needs a new paint job.
I had a this green Civic and a red CRV that had terrible clearcoat issues - white circles. Did this to CRV. Only 50% improvement - turned the white circles into gray circle - which are still very noticeable when you drive by someone.
We have not heard of this problem before. The emulsion brings out the underlying paint color unless it is prevented from reaching the oxides by previous applications of polishes, waxes, rubbing compounds or spray applications that have not been completely removed in the preparation process. In any case Howard, we have a return and refund policy if you are not happy with the results. Simply contact us for a return label and shipping instructions. Thanks for your interest in our product.
at 0:52 I hate how that sounded idk if it's only me but that gave me the chills & made cringe so badly .

Classy comment Brandon !!
Is this product delivered to Saudi Arabia?
Loyal G. Hernandez what yu talking bout fool
Anyone notice the window sticker? My guess is this was just a quick fix to sell the car faster.
we don't buy or sell cars and never have
The car was in a car dealers yard when we treated it to demonstrate the product to the owner. Obviously successfully !
Xterra Modding Community would you rather receive a car with bad paint or a car with paint that looks good?
@@dilfonicz i guess that does make sense but hey man peoples gotta get their bucks somehow. don’t hate the player hate the game!
@@dilfonicz While that is true people like to over price the car they are selling greed at its finest
The vehicle can be waxed after this treatment - but remember that if you want apply another coat in say 6 to 12 months time, you will have to get that wax layer off first. Most of our customers are just applying the 2nd coat - it is easier to apply than a waxing and the finish is nearly as good.
Good video. Saludos!
que haces acá FC Autos? Jajaja...naaa, hacen excelente trabajo ustedes también 👍
OxideOff will this product wash off?
what about adding clear coat over that to seal it?
No. It is safe to wash the car after the emulsion has set.
Metal polish also works great on faded clear coat with a buffing machine.
What kind of metal
Polish?
Electric Lotus I have used autosol or mother’s metal polish.
Honda's clear coat is trash

Nissan is also notorious for bad clear coat.
@@69ChevyGarage I have had my 350z since 04 it's 2020 thing looks newer than most cars
All depends on the yr, honda did do recalls on the clear coat,, ex the 07’ civic had clear coat problems owners had till 2014 to go in and have it repainted.
Ryan Cheverie garged ? covered parking?
That emulsion is a temp fix , you should have just sanded it and recleared it with spray 2k clear from the paint store
if you already know then what are you doing here lol
If I ever get a response, can you see the old clear coat paint lines after the new clear?
Hi from Australia, you are right, the damaged clear coat can be seen, especially after exposure to the weather. This method is a dodge some car yards used when getting rid of a cheap car for a better price. If you are going to do it yourself, either use the rusoleum method or 2 pack. Because 2pack is carcinogenic, if you are doing it as home in an enclosed area it will damage your lungs. That’s why most home jobs use enamel. It’s safer.
@@kimkeam2094 I ended up doing it right, sanding it down with 800, colour matched base and new clear, 2000 grit wetsanding after it got cured and polished it, came out great
Glad it worked out well!
Temporary fix is better than just leaving it..
I tried this on two cars with mixed results. At best it's a short term fix, it will return as it never really went away it was concealed.
Probably need to repaint Mark. Expensive though
in the first image, you had direct sun light to highlight the defects, in the second image, looks like vehicle is overcast. overcast light does not show defects as much. Also, emulsion application took you more than two minutes. Would love to see before and after under controlled lighting. Do another video.
The whole video is self explanatory as the trunk is treated twice from roughly the same viewpoint. The 2 minute reference is the time it took to do the second coat - was probably less than that as the video shows

See you at the paint booth in a few months. Nice gimmic for used car salesman/lots but anyone that knows anything about paint and body work knows that wont last long but good again good for used car sales. Basically sand and apply temporary clear equivalent.
As we state on our web site, the application of this emulsion is not as good as a paint job, but is a DIY at a fraction of the cost.
.
TheRebuilt1 jeez dude calm down, I d9ubt anyone is going to get a pain job that is more expensive than their car is worth. cheap inexpensive temporary fix, for an old car is better than pissing through a bunch of paint just for the car to break down within another 30 to 60k miles.
lotusfreestyle I'm spray painting part of my car it looks quite good as well
I have got 3 20 year old cars. The only place where clear coat is failing is on the collision repaired panels. Original paint and clear coat is still great but every single repainted panel on 3 different cars have clear coat failure in few years. Suffice to say, I have very low opinion of the general body shop and paint places.
Honda should have to fix this screw up with the paint clear coat problem, iv got a Civic and facing the same problem
Since when does an Australian call it a trunk? its a boot lid
My timberland boots
Great job brother
It looks similar to a product called "color back" as i recall it worked at first but later applications produced decluning results... Is you product better than color back?
I wonder how many days it lasted. There's no way it's any more than a temporary fix. Clear coat doesn't just lift from the edges, it blisters in random locations. That product may glue the edges down, temporarily, but the clear coat will quickly lift again.
As we say repeatedly on our web site, our emulsion is not as good as a professional repaint but the application is a simple DIY at a fraction of the cost. Without knowing the circumstances of a vehicle, its color, how it has been looked after and where it is located, the general answer to how long the finish will be effective is about the same as a good wax application.
Wonderful Option!! Good grief you disgruntled public folk! Why all the NEGATIVITY?
trolls
Sure look way better then before. But did you buy this car used before this clear coat problem or brand new from dealer?
Can someone post a link of a more practical solution?
Great video
Ummm, turtle ceramic coating poured into small bottle? It also needs 24 hours to set and no contact water in that time and then can be polished over as well.
Not even comparable
Uh-oh. Better get Maaco.
Just kidding. I'll throw some of this on my hooptie and save money for pizza.
So now the car has no clear coat?so it wont last long
Mines far more severe it’s an 05 Civic color grey and it’s paint is really cooked to the bare paint with no clear coat 😂
woww unbelievable good job sir

Oscar - the product is only available from our web site and at the moment, we can only ship within the USA. Thanks
It's better than nothing, but why hasn't anyone come up with a process to mask off the good exposed base, and make the rest of the clear coat on an affected panel peel off quickly?
this RUSTEZE!!!! JAJAJA ... SALUDOS FROM MÉXICO
Thank you for sharing this video!!
I want to know what you mean by coat of emulsion!
What's the material of it?
would applying a layer of clear coat on top of this finished product yield better results?
jayzo4444
No, it would cause the clear coat to fail immediately. The surface must be prepped; stripped of any contaminants before spraying, and this would be one of those contaminants.
Niko Delmedico
Prepped how exactly, Niko?
@@joysanders59
One would need to scuff down the whole surface, clean the surface with a wax and grease remover, and then it would be ready for clear to be sprayed.
Niko Delmedico
Thank you so much. I dont know if I can do that myself, but I was an artist so... Im having a lot of health problems but may try when I can. Does temperature outside matter?
Does this leave a "scratched" finish? Or smooth/shiny looking?
Mostly a smooth and glossy finish - not as good as a professional paint job but the application is a DIY and much less expensive
There is nothing wrong with Honda or Nissans clearcoat. The problem is it's applied super thin! Couple that with a dark paint that hold of heat and BOOM clear coat failure!!! The solution? Wax the car when it's new and every 3 months there after. 😎
That's really great advice! Thanks 😊
mostly used as ajust a quick fix to sell a car
As long as youre not selling cat for rabbit its fair game
I’am sorry want it’s the price thanks so much god bless you god blessed your day & your family

what is emulsion? American here. never heard of it.

Dope its not a clear coat failure. Its the color coat. That white fringe is the color coat after uv eats through the pigment.
nice job but i have a question...clear coat been removed right? dont we need to apply clear coat again?
Clear coat has not all been removed - as shown in the video. However, if you are comfortable in masking off and spraying clear coat, then go ahead.

will it go back to how it was b4 if u don't keep adding or how does that go?
Wow thats pretty slick...ima try that thz
Early 80s people wanted plastic coated cars. It will last forever! No it will look like a shedding snake unless you store it in the garage 24/7. My 2000 Ford truck looks horrible with pealing plastic bubbles all over the hood. Needs to be sandblasted & repainted.
I dont understand why he didnt re-clear coat it
why not just use clear coat after sanding it? it does come in a spray can with bonding if you don't have a sprayer
We have not had any success with spray on clear coat. If you try it, let us know how it wenr
We don't buy or sell cars and never had
I see alot of clear coat finish but every vehicle I see is done on black let me see you restore something on a charcoal gray😎

Hi there thanks for this video. From where can I buy ? Please let me know
What is the name of the material you used?

What is emulsion? Wax?
Mine Is faded not like this, It's white and not down to bare paint. Could I just polish and wax the paint so It looks at least better? And how would I maintain the look the longest?
Jose - if your paintwork is just faded, you should definitely use polish and wax to restore the shine and to keep this finish you should polish and wax every 6 months or so.
@@oxideoff7387 Awesome, that's the good news I was hoping for, I know the longer lasting solution would have been to get It repainted but I don't have the money for that right now. Thank You for your quick response

Will there be a bigger bottle of oxide-off in the future to buy?
Probably not as the existing bottle has enough emulsion to do a full sized car, twice.
Did you really used the sand paper in circular motion?
Bro it really aint that serious karen
@@M3Eddie Karen? You really called me Karen? Ok, as a professional certified auto detailer let me enlighten you. When you sand it should be in a straight motion so when you buff in circular motion, the buffer is able to erase the lines. If you sand in a circular motion, the buffer will buff parallel to the sanding lines not able to erase them. At first you won't be able to tell because the product is still fresh and shiny but give it a day, you will see the swirl marks of the sanding under the compound, polish and even wax so don't come here calling people "Karen" for no reason (apparently you don't know of what a Karen is) without knowing who the person is because maybe, JUST maybe that person might be a certified professional in the area and will make you look bad. Capish?
Jonathan Molina it doesn’t matter it all looks the same in the end if you put in the effort. Def not reading that long ass rant kiddo. Only thing you’re a professional of is being a professional moron. Enjoy
Good day ! I had the same problem with my car. I am want to buy this product. Will you deliver in United arab emirates?
Sorry Juan but we cannot deliver to the UAE
@@oxideoff7387 .Ok Thanks a lot
How much it would cost in time . Effort & retail sales. Would it be easier to pick a part a new trunk . Or let a pro shop handle it.
This is a Do-It-Yourself procedure that takes little time and effort at a fraction of the cost of getting any sort of professional help. If you can wash a car, you can use this product, but obviously a new trunk will give a better result but at what cost ?
@@oxideoff7387 I drive a 94 Acura vigor. My clear coat is really bad on my hood . However the car runs brand new . Interior is perfect. Yet I'm not changing anything about the paint. Thank you for your reply & your video . No hard feelings I liked what you did there. . Jenn
does this act as a spread on clear coat?
Do you have sales in Turkey?
is this a long term solution? why did it fail first time?
Paul - the only long term solution is to do a full repaint and clear coat. Why clear coat and the underlying paint either fails or oxidizes is a mystery - bad paint or clear coat, bad adhesion, bad application etc and has been the subject of numerous class action lawsuits, but no real answers as far as we know.
Must be a car salesman
What if you apply polishing step after 2nd coat of emulsion has dried up? And then apply a spray ceramic coating (of course depending on where the car is stored).
We have never done this. If you do, please let us know the outcome
@@oxideoff7387 I would consider the longevity of the emulsion due to the protection it will receive.
The mixing of chemicals is what would cause me to be apprehensive to the idea. Then again, if I tried it on a junk panel then I would be able to tell.
OK

Nelsio Carrillo I've been in the paint and body business over 25 years never heard of that neither
Nelso, agreed. Paint is only as good as what's under it, in addition to what is on top.
Here, he has remnants of a failing coat that will continue to fail, and what's on top is crap.
This won't last worth a damn. As other comments have said, it's only good for someone who is fine with half-assing it, or to get this car sold to an unfortunate sucker.

the color of my car is light grey is it gonna work?
Jommar - It is not common to see oxidation on light colored cars, as the surfaces do not get as hot as on darker colored cars. Our emulsion will improve the look of a light grey car but it probably won’t be as dramatic as on darker colors. If the clear coat has peeled, you the owner, will still be able to see where the clear coat starts again, since you know where to look and our emulsion is not a “filler”. Others who don’t know your car will probably not notice anything.
