  • Parliament in Division After Government MPs Block DPP's Lonnie Chijere Phiri Appointment to Service Commission
The House has gone into a division after government MPs blocked a motion to co-opt Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) MP Lonnie Chijere Phiri into the Parliamentary Service Commission.
Leader of the House, Richard Chimwendo Banda, presented the motion, which stated: "Pursuant to section 194D(1)(b) of the Constitution and section 5(2) of the Parliamentary Service Act, this House resolves that Zomba Chingale MP, Honorable Lonnie Chijere Phiri, be appointed to the Parliamentary Service Commission, filling the vacancy left by Mulanje South West MP, Honorable Dr. George Chaponda, following his election as Leader of Opposition."
Despite this, government MPs rejected the motion, sparking opposition MPs to call for a division. The Speaker granted this request, and a division vote is now underway to determine whether Chijere Phiri will be appointed to the Commission.
