I own a 2011 BMW X3 idrive28. Your video was right on and very helpful especially in resetting the oil change interval on the dash. I used Castrol 0w-40 full synthetic oil European Forumla and a Fram XG (Extra Guard) synthetic filter. I ended up only using exactly 6 quarts and my oil level read Maximum.
I would like to know who made that old oil filter? I noticed it had red o rings, (maybe Champ Labs) I don't like that fact the plastic end caps broke off from the filter media, probably with about 10,000 miles on the oil change. Personally I would use the Fram Ultra Guard oil filter or the OEM Bosh oil filter on that BMW. How did the Fram Extra Guard stand up after 5,000 miles? Any media collapsing or end caps falling off.
Can I please ask for your help? I have 2016 BMW X3 F25 LCI xdrive20d. I am unable to find the oil filter in the engine compartment, eventhough I have read the manual but it does not have a picture or say where the oil filter is. I have been to BMW service department this morning and asked where about the oil filter but it seems noone knows where it is. I think it is weird. Hope you can help me. regards Henry
Nice vid. I am also trying to keep the oil changes at every 5000 miles. A couple questions - (1) Generally oil filters are just hand tighten. It looks like you went considerably further. Anybody know th torque spec for this? (2) Same question for the engine oil plug - torque spec? (3) Did you drive the car on a set of ramps? Overall, great tips! Thanks very much.
wow...interesting...it almost makes you think if the dealer even replaced the filter...hmm....to think that it'd crumble like that..makes me want to take a hard look at the service interval in my 2011 BMW X3 35I. Thank you for the update
I started doing my oil change every 5k miles. Dealer does it every 15k or so, depends on how you drive. They are trying to save money on parts and labor wherever they can. From what I've learned it is not good for the car to run on the same oil for 15k, no matter what oil you use.
Let me rephrase that. I normally do it every 5k, but that was the first time I did or on that car after purchase and I'm sure the was like 10k on it or even more.

Thanks for the vid! It reminded me to go buy an oil wrench before doing mine.
BTW I looked it up. The oil filter wrench is an 86mm 16 flute design.
Michael Rockwell thanks for the info. I may add an annotation to the vid.
awesome demonstrating videos. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for your help and the link.
Hi Felix you still have your x3
No, sold it a while ago
Need to start before checking oil
Dang....that oil change is way over due.
Thats the reason the filter fell apart.
Nice video do you have the torque specs?
Unfortunately I do not.
Oil drain plug and oil filter both to 25 Nm (18.5 ft lb)
My filter cap says on it (25nm +5nm). First 25 N meters, back off 180°, and then 30nm.

Torque spec printed top filter , same torque oil plug
25 Nm for both the pan plug and filter
Felek- how many miles did you have on the oil filter that crumbled?
I believe it was about 10-12k. This was the first time I was doing the oil change by myself on that car, so that filter was installed by the dealer.

What size filter wrench did you use ?
I used BMW filter tool, I believe it's 74mm
wrong oil used? should use 5w 30
What type of oil does it take? 0W 30 or 5W 30
I used 5w30
The bottle you set on the engine says 0w40
How long did you go between oil changes?
5k miles
WOW..5k? that oil filter looked a hot mess for only being used for that low of miles....shooz, now I need to go and check my shit..lol Thank you

ah ok...I understand now Thank you
