HenryTo , it all depends on where you live and how much you use your AC/heating/fan. I would change it every 10-15k miles, but I am not a mechanic and do not know exactly when it should be changed. Just change it when it's dirty or of the air smells:)
don't need to wave to the sun... you can tell right away. generally it depends on where you live and sometimes even if it looks clean you should probably change it
The clips that you can see is the filter frame, you pull the frame and the job is way easier, the filter wraps around the frame.
If you drive your bmw in traffic or city roads active carbon filter is better

What I always do before changing a Cabin or Air Filter is to remove it and look at. Hold it up to the sun and see if it really needs changing.
