Yes, it is hard to explain why electric vehicles only use one gear while an internal Combustion engine can need up to 10 gears to do the same thing, without having to explain how a transmission works. Both motors and engines use transmissions, but the ICE has a smaller power band (the RPM that provides the needed power), so it needs multiple gears to spread that power over a wider range of speeds. While a motor provides most of its torque at 0 RPM and can be most efficient at 5,000 RPM. The transmission for the motor is often a compromise of power and efficiency, but if you want a really high top speed (like 200 or more MPH [322km/h]) you will need a second gear for the motor.

@@HRM.H batteries aren't too difficult, although the system needs to be scalable and have the option for having multiple banks scattered throughout the car. There is no BS about range, he was very honest in saying that you're only going to get X number of miles out of it but hey this is step one. Great job!
I did not think there was a competitor to Porsche by Singer. Well... there isn't but this Zelectric Porsche comes from left field and it's a doozy. This is the car we needed but didn't know it. The curb weight of 2500 lbs is outstanding but, with a range of 120 miles, it gives reason to pause but it was a wise decision not to add 400 lbs of weight for more range. Better to wait until battery technology advances. This is one of my favorite videos in ages. So much of the video is just Jay and Trent shooting the breeze and talking about cars. It's so fun and relaxing be a fly on the wall. I'm impressed with Zelectric and I wish them nothing but the best.
I agree with Jay, I'd much rather have the electric motor, then the engine that came with it. What a great build! Custom electric conversions of classic cars seems like a winning business model.

At 68, I would normally say, noooo, I would hope to have the attitude of "that's cool". My neighbor had one back in the day, same model, even same color. At the age of 15 then, thought it was the coolest car on the road, period!!
Wonderful discussion of needed compromises: Preserving great handling needs low weight; more range would need a bigger battery, but handling would deteriorate.
I think it is interesting how well the 901 architecture adapts to this conversion. I am supporting an aging 986 with its well known engine foibles. I think it is possible the Boxster may benefit someday, IMS be gone!
I've built roads my whole life. We could install power strips in the road on freeways. Maybe on long drives, the car could move and charge at the same time.

This is a great episode about a great car conversion. There are a multitude of ways to keep classic cars alive and enjoyable into the future; this is simply a new way. Since it still costs probably 10 times what it would cost to simply rebuild the gas drivetrain, these aren't going to gobble up the classic car market any time soon, so relax, purists.
I can't believe it's only 300 lbs more. That's incredible I expected 1000 more. That's just like having a fat passenger with you lol. Having owned a 912, they're about the most gutless and boring Porsche to drive ever. I don't see how anyone can complain about removing the 90 HP engine that's slower 0-60 than 4 cylinder Camrys lol
It's nice to have more options to have a car to ones taste.
Nothing better in the world than the "sound" of a great running flat 6. I would love to have some of those discarded Porsche engines.
Fun fact, this car has never had a flat 6 in it
The "crate motors" are a good start, but they need to offer plug-&-play modular controller and battery systems (plus HVAC) for the idea of doing easy EV conversions can take off.
Yes , especially a modular removable battery system would be nice. The price is still a mayor let back
@@HRM.H batteries aren't too difficult, although the system needs to be scalable and have the option for having multiple banks scattered throughout the car.
But the battery is child's play compared to the controller that goes between the batteries and the motor and usually serves as the charge controller as well. This is the interface between the driver and the motor and is the "brains" of the system.
@@ianfurqueron5850 well there are tons of company's making custom controllers so that's not the hard thing. Just price is the mayor barrier for everyone.
I wouldn't mind an affordable kit for a vintage Fiat 124 Spider.
@@HRM.H
The word you’re looking for is “major”, not “mayor”
I like these guys too. They do an honest conversion and make a really quick car that is technologically as advanced as the Tesla's from which the motor came. There is no BS about range, he was very honest in saying that you're only going to get X number of miles out of it but hey this is step one. Great job!
Jay asks a question, mashes the accelerator mid answer lol
The car is BEAUTIFULLY DONE and like you said The electric tesla motor is the cherry on top Great Video I really enjoy your videos thanks again
I saw Lucid Air at the mall the other day. I HOPE you'll cover that beast!
Yeah that car is incredible. I'm really excited to see where Lucid are going.
Jay...have them convert your late 1930's Panhard Dynamic, the one that smokes so bad you don't want to drive it.
The first few seconds all the noise all the excitement...:)
This is an incredibly good episode! Interesting stuff, I’d definitely like to have one! Great job on the car Zelectric and great job on the video Jay!
This was one of the best espisodes. Such an engaging conversation
I agree with Jay, I'd much rather have the electric motor, then the engine that came with it. What a great build!
Custom electric conversions of classic cars seems like a winning business model.
Beautiful job, if all electric cars looked like that id want one then! Actual car lines and design with a interior that looks like a car not a video game console. Awesome job by these guys!
I hope Porsche manages to make a great electric 911 in the future as we are unfortunately going that way. This build gives some hope.
Actually Porsche's against it and which is why they are coming up with synthetic fuels!
If you accept that’s the way we are going with no pushing back then yes-that’s the way we are going. Funny how that works.
My first Porsche was a '67 912 from Italy. Loved it. I like the e-swap. These gents have the cred.
At 68, I would normally say, noooo, I would hope to have the attitude of "that's cool". My neighbor had one back in the day, same model, even same color. At the age of 15 then, thought it was the coolest car on the road, period!!
A vintage 911 is still the coolest car on the road. Definitely.
Well, a 912 in this case. But they look the same.
This is one of Jay's best.
Wonderful discussion of needed compromises: Preserving great handling needs low weight; more range would need a bigger battery, but handling would deteriorate.
Well done Sherlock.
That is my perfect car hands down I would buy that in a heartbeat
I think it is interesting how well the 901 architecture adapts to this conversion. I am supporting an aging 986 with its well known engine foibles. I think it is possible the Boxster may benefit someday, IMS be gone!
17:57 listen to that door close.... perfection 👏
Brilliant, very well engineered and converted classic! Those two fellas were SMART/INTELLIGENT guys.
They also seemed very down to earth... Not the "I'm a rock-star wannabe" mentality of some of these guys.
*ruined classic
@@AR-zq9hq stuck in the past I see
An Avanti electric conversion would be cool. It's like they were designed to be electric, but the tech didn't exist yet.
@@stephenbenson7409 Yes, but I want to see a real one, not just one in a movie with electric whirring sounds dubbed over it.😁
I've built roads my whole life. We could install power strips in the road on freeways. Maybe on long drives, the car could move and charge at the same time.
That’s been an idea for 20 years….but it sounds too much like a death Nell for fossil fuel…so they 86’d it
ChrisNVegas ... Cool idea, but why do that for cars (BEV’s) that aren’t even green relative ICEmobiles?
Would that not cost billions. And what happens when a cable fails.
@@peter1317 billions? Do you realize how much the dept of transportation spends every year on bridge repairs?
Is is one car I would have loved to see up on the lift.

I’m not a big cheerleader for electric cars but I love this car. Maybe one day when the battery technology evolves to really take over from gas/diesel I’d consider an electric.
That’s ok. We electric car drivers understand. It’s hard to let go and do something different. That’s why they’re called fossil fuel cars.
@@ezpoppy55 You're not helping your "cause"
Ernest Z well there is the pesky little fact that EV production actually produces more CO2 than those nasty fossil fuel vehicles so…yeah. But I’ll try not to ruin your feeling of self-righteousness.
@@thedudeabides1443 Yeah? Well, you know, that’s just, like, uh, your opinion, man.
But perhaps you ought to update and expand your facts. It’s a shame to see someone embarrass themselves so nakedly with inaccuracies and truncated information. But, you know, whatever.
Ernest Z “Careful man there’s a beverage here!” Just trying to keep it real!
The chit chat between the two of you on the ride was truly priceless! "Inquiring minds want to kmow!" Lol
I LOVE these projects. I'd like to see Zelectric try something like a big old Cadillac. Something about a vehicle that is extravagantly wasteful made green and efficient , not to mention better handling, is really appealing. Young guy looks like an Americanized Cumberbatch.
AHHHHHh Thank you for saying something that I didn't know I agree with.
Great drive, great interview.
I am 81 and had a 2008 Forrester Turbo, that I had built over the last few years.
Did 160.9 MPH in the mile and half @ Mojave Magnum. It was fun car to drive and enjoy,
but age caught up with me and I difficulty shifting and getting in and out of the Subaru..
I sold the car and bought a KIA Niro EV. Boy what a fun car to drive. Just like you experienced. Quick and quiet. I get target range of 280/285 miles.
I agree an Electric DeLorean would be a kick.
How about you mention the cost? Or is that a “if you have to ask” situation?
Another fun in car convo about cars. Not just this car. Like when guests are laid back and are true car folks.
Salvage to Savage is building a beast C10 full all wheel drive Tesla drivetrain. It’s a cool build. Would be fun if they brought it to Jay when they get done.
Old Porsche guys are going to throw a fit when they see this.
uhhh yeah fairly reasonably I'd say lol I'm not even 30 and this is absolute blasphemy. It wasn't just that a company made a *new* electric vehicle, it's that they had to defile an already rare, already plenty expensive, already nearly perfect classic
@@jacobl6714 Get a life.
@@jacobl6714 agree. This is a crime. I'd rather see that Porsche turned into a bunch of Korean kettles than be defiled like that
@@AR-zq9hq the real crime are the ones who can't or won't fix theirs but won't sell them or entertain alternatives to keep it on the road. I am cheering this electric Porsche
@@houseofno I'd say this is worse. I agree about collectors hiding theirs away being a crime but at least they can one day be driven and enjoyed as standard
Dear Mr. Leno.... I love your show!
Tech-heavy episode, very interesting!
Trent reminds me of Mike Westun in "Burn Notice". :D
Please don't ever stop doing these Jay.
Beats the pants off the network stuff.
Jay
Great job on this episode.
Not ready to pull my 993 motor but the 912 is an awesome option for this application.
I’d own one 👍🏻
Very interesting conversation during the drive. Thanks.
I have seen Zeletric converted VW Beetles on YT and they are fascinating.
Yeah I watched this video too
Karmann Ghias are also stunning as EVs 👌
It's cool to be a purist and not want to modify a classic car, but a lot of those classic cars sit in storage and are only used a few weeks a year. Electric classics can be driven as a daily driver and the value won't drop much at all.
Yes good point. I hope they remain massively expensive!
16:22 - The moment David realizes that he's not the one Jay is taking on the test drive.
I can't believe it's only 300 lbs more. That's incredible I expected 1000 more. That's just like having a fat passenger with you lol. Not a big deal at all especially for how much more torque this thing would have. And the fact one can go back to stock is sweet. It's the prefect situation for an old style electric car.
Extra weight gain might actually be less. While they mentioned the weight of the original engine, trans and exhaust, they forgot to factor in the added weight from a full tank of gas!
Jay as much as I admire your enthusiasm for electric cars as the future I think that the fact you spent almost the entire test drive talking about other cars proves it's virtually impossible to form an emotional bond with these souless vehicles.
As a mere observer it reminds me of comparing playing a vinyl disc for your musical pleasure or streaming Spotify.
I know which I prefer.
Nuff said
I could easily bond with this car. And, I would continue to thrill to the sound of a
cammed Vette or a 917. It's not soulless. It's a different kind of soul.
@@davidmcnair1455 I respect your reply and over time I will, like all of us come around to the future of motoring.
Who knows, my next car could possibly be electric.
Sadly not a vintage conversation but hopefully something with unique styling.
@@stevemumford6983 Thanks, Steve.
The future of past is here, if nostalgia wants a future it has to be in the present, truly a green car
High praise indeed from Jay for this vehicle and this company! That is money in the bank for this team. I wish them great success in the future. They obviously deserve it!
JAY should invite "RICH REBUILDS" to his garage, the stories that RICH has about TESLA spinoffs will make it a must-watch video.
I got to check them out
He also owns a BMW Clown Shoe that isn't electric, and he's doing an LS swap on a Tesla.
SuperfastMatt is fitting a Tesla drivetrain into a 1950 Jag. He's been on Jay's show with his motorcycle engine in a 67 Honda 600 sportscar.
Benedict Cumberbatch ??
I am trying to picture a Jay Leno episode with tortured recorder music in it!
Superb episode guys!! loved seeing Jay in the car with another person again its so much more fun and dynamic!!*.* Trent is awesome, not only is this the future it is happening now.. bringing the classics to d Zelectric age, the electrified 65 Mustang oh i wanna see that one!!
Very nice Jay, thank you for offering this. it will super interesting to see how electric evolves. I am bit jealous that you get to drive everything cool, looking for those on your show one of these days!
I am jealous too!
Nicest electric car I've seen so far. Fantastic!
I love this Jay, this car is amazing, I love American muscle cars and I really love the 911 body, but I would prefer them with an electric model. BTW, this youtube is wayyyyyyy better than the TV show, just sayin...
Trent is an amazing engineer! Jey, please do a conversion with these guys and make a small series out of it. Maybe inside the Restoration Update Videos. Maybe the base JLG audience does not dig the nerdy details but the information like "does a gearbox make it more efficient" is definitelly something many people would be interested in.
Ferdinand Porsche in his early days seemed more like electrician than an engineer.
Engineer: Waiting to drive a Tycan
Jay: I drove it
Engineer: Waiting to drive the Tesla Plaid
Jay: I drove it
Conclusion: what HASN"T Jay driven?
You're tearing the heart out of a beautiful car. They're not meant to be teslas. It's a classic porsche...Keep it classic !
What we have here is a Porsche golf cart, I think a gt3 would look good on the links.
Porschephile here, I love this!
EV West has been doing this for a long time. I think that this is great. The range won’t be great. Simply no room for a ton of batteries.
Michael Bream doesn't get enough credit for the work he does
Haha, not often you get to have a proper conversation in a 2 second hot rod. Outstanding!
lol
Really beautiful build; the green with those wheels and the ride height looks sick! If this is the "future" of road-going classics, so be it; I'd rather see these cars on the road than in a museum.
Or just kept in their original form as they should be. That’s another option.
Innovate, adapt or whither away... I'm a 911 owner and I suppose purist, but I so respect what these guys are doing...
