Ruffalo skipping onto the dance floor had me and my theater absolutely rolling.
Me too😂😂😂😂😂
Had the same at our theater) cane back for this energy
It’s the funniest thing I’ve seen in a movie in a LONG time
That is officially one of my favourite scenes of all times!
I was laughing so hard at this one 😂😂😂
haha yes that skip had me laughing , especially with the music going on, perfection.
Sure the odd dancing is great, but that strange music drew me in instantly with that first note.
The part where the fighting starts is my favorite, where it gets folksy.
Brilliant piece, choreography and cinematography compliment it absolutely perfectly
That's a reinterpretation or a desconstruction of a portuguese tradicional music genra: rancho.
The music is PERFECT
Yeah its catchy, but the off melody creates a sense of "wrongness" to the scene along with the jerking dance moves. Something is off but you can't quite figure out what.
0:55 I’m obsessed with what Ruffalo does here
same! i think this was the most hilarious scene in the entire movie! i keep coming back to watch this! lol
1930s cartoon dance😅
same. I can't figure it out, but it's so weird to watch.
I favored him for the Oscar over RDJ.
It really does seem like a move one would do on-the-fly to get with the jarring music their naive lover is so into, but still being uncomfortable about how assertive her dance moves are. Love this movie for a lot of reasons but the actors’ small details to their parts really sells it. Always knew Ruffalo was a talent though.
The dinner scene was the pivotal moment in the movie! Her discovering dance for the first time and REALLY letting herself be FREE (dance like no one is watching) - and Mark's character still trying to 'control' her by forcing her to do a more formal dance - and she constantly broke away from himto do what SHE felt....such a foreshadowing moment! This movie is BRILLIANT!
Yesssss! I love the way that every time he tries to force her into the accepted formal style of the dance, she flips it on him and pulls him into HER version. Every move, every time. He never had a chance.
It was genius, especially the way it interrupted a severe lecture from him about the way their affair was supposed to have progressed. It was the whole theme of the movie, summed up in less than two minutes. Actually, it could be condensed even further, into those few seconds when he tried to force her into the standard waltz position in which the male leads and the female goes where she's told, and she spun it into a stranglehold on HIM and steered him where she wanted him to go.
Yorgos gets more out of a dance scene than any other director I can think of!
What do you think Aristotle meant when he said "Dance like no one is watching?"
I just love Yorgos Lanthimos' unique and special approach to find beauty in weirdness. Here's a character who's not trying to attract attention by dancing, she's just being herself.
Yes, we all saw the scene and know what it means. I like Yorgos but it's not like he's the only one who can ''find beauty in weirdness'' (and it's not exactly about ''beaty'' anyway)
@@nl7607ok, why is it bad tho to you? Just curious
Go watch a porn flick .. this movie is disturbing and weird.
@@nl7607
your comments are written like dialogue from the film
@@nl7607 nope, i just found it amusing
Your sad face makes me discover angry feelings for you 😂😂😂. I lost it at the theatre
😂
Ruffalo’s dance when he comes back into view makes me smile every time.
His hands on his hips & those ditzy steps - hilarious!
I laughed really loud in the cinema at this! 😂
Ruffalo's facial expressions and acting in this scene should have deserved an Oscar
Ruffalo was amazing in this movie
This was honestly one of the coolest scenes I've ever watched in a movie
There is a very similar scene in the Favourite, another Lanthimos film. He seems to have a thing for filming unusual dance scenes.
Yeah, i think this may have knocked off mia and Vincents' dance in pulp fiction....
This is such a GREAT scene in the movie. And watching Mark’s character, trying not to be embarrassed by her constant childlike mannerism, by jumping into dance with her. The timing is perfect in the movie, and generated a huge laugh from the audience. Such a great film
I didn’t take it that he was embarrassed but that’s an interesting interpretation. The couple who asks Bella to hang out with them afterwards and the old man winking at her shows that people seemed to like her dancing. Nothing to be embarrassed by. I think Mark Ruffalo’s character just didn’t want her having all of the attention or wanted to be a part of it at least.
And yet it also feels very 19th century, and turkish in some manner.
Goofy ass movie
@@hicksznhe wanted to control her, isn't it obvious from the dance ? God, some people are so dense...
I took it as he was controlling the moves so he wouldn't be embarrassed
Ruffalo should have also won something for this role! He was hilarious and phenomenal.
I can't put into words how hilariously perfect the sudden fisheye shot of Ruffalo walking over to quietly bear wrestle the other man is.
And how he can’t beat him even more hilarious kdjshsjsu
When a load of serving staff get involved and start grappling with each other in the same silly way, it becomes even funnier.
the fisheye lens effect is used whenever bella is seeing a new type of situation that confuses her.
@@douglasharley2440thank you so much, I was confused as to why that was done. came to comments to find the answer!
"She's a maniac, maniac on the floor,
And she's dancing like she's never danced before..."
YES PERFECT SONG FOR THIS SCENE LOL FLASHDANCE !
she quite literally has never danced before, you can tell this is her first time 😂
@@dandeliar9213 lmao
Check out dogtooth, Lanthimos references flash dance in that
Emma just won the Oscar!!!
💃
LMAOOOOOOOO mark ruffalo tip-tapping his way over to bella will never not be absolutely hysterical. absolutely hilarious. 😂😂😂😂
“You, like me, are a creature of freedom in the moment”-what dialogue!
The man at 0:28 is Jerskin Fendrix, the composer of the score. Such a brilliant work!
Oh yeah? He’s so sexy 😊
It’s his first movie too! I hope he wins this award season
What's the instrument he's playing with that crazy foot pedal?
Aka Foreskin Jendrix.
@@mrsunshine518I don't know what it is but it made me think of something out of Dr. Seuss!
Ruffalo's bravado walk to the winking man and then just descending into a pathetic rugby scrum is perfect. Any Saturday night in the UK
that fisheye scene with Ruffalo beating this man is absolutely genius
He wasn't even beating him. I don't know wtf he was doing.
@@sirleo5103 he was trying to beat him
Also overused in ''avant garde'' films.
why
@@yevgeniyaleshchenko849I’ve literally never seen such a wide fisheye lens used before in a film, so I found it pretty unique. I wouldn’t say its overused at all.
The fisheye lenses are becoming a Yorgos classic choice. I love it
What does it mean? Like why does he use it.
For me it feels like a go pro , but I guess he wants his own styles , here it makes the scene even more burlesque than it is supposed to be , so it works well
@@dangerislanderits nothing new. Check some old The french wave movies. The directors use it all The time
@@angc1456so not only is it dumb and pretentious, but he ripped it off some other dumb pretentious fuck?
This scene was amazing to see in the theater. Duncan, so self-serious, trying as best he can to keep up with Bella and turn her dancing into something that an onlooker might think is fashionable. And then Duncan ?? fighting ?? but it's just him grabbing people ?? I loved every second of it.
Honestly, I rarely laugh out loud in Movies, but Mark Ruffalo's delivery was absolutely incredible. 10/10
I was really surprised by how genuinely hilarious this movie often was. And now, thankfully, both of these guys are now nominated for Oscars!✌️🌟
The man playing the strange instrument at 0:27 is actually Jerskin Fendrix, the composer of the film score
I'm obsessed with this dance scene, I can't stop watching it
I don't know what I'm more obsessed with... the dance or the music.
Regardless, I keep watching and listening for the joy of it.
Me too. Like the Wednesday dance scene I must watch it over and over.
My favourite ever comedic performance by a typically serious actor. Mark ruffalo was brilliant in this
This is the most iconic dance scene that I have come across since I saw Uma Thurman and John Travolta in the film Pulp Fiction.
Yes almost is number two part of that scene. I thought of that scene instantly in the theater in a surprising way.
Omg yes!!!! Iconic
I like it, but it is very similiar to the dance scene Lanthimos did in the Favorite, seeing him do it twice felt a bit played out.
Saturday Night Fever and Napoleon Dynamite have iconic dance scenes too
I love how Duncan tries to dance with Bella the traditional way but Bella does her own thing and Duncan just goes along with it 😂😂
Congrats to Emma!!! She brought acting to a whole new level and totally deserved the win!!!
I really really love ruffalo’s entrance into the floor!
this is a seminal performance from emma. she was born to play bella and it's beautiful to see such a talent in her element: taking film to new heights. this performance will go down in history.
Oh ffs... She was born to play MANY characters and have a prolific career. How about watching film first before making any conclusions?
@@yevgeniyaleshchenko849 what in the world is your problem? i simply was conveying that the character of bella is quite complex to portray in terms of physicality and her unique state of existence as a woman learning everything about the world for the first time and since emma is an exceptionally talented actress, she was well suited to do her justice. i don't even need to have seen the full film as this scene in and of itself attests to what i just said but i know the rest will follow suit. stop making a problem out of everything, i beg.
Have you watched the whole movie ? If NOT then you should also wait until you make such harsh comments. @@yevgeniyaleshchenko849
This is better leading role than that La La Land crap
@@jesseseale2558 i agree this role is far more complex but emma anchored la la land and drew a tremendous amount of depth from a more limited character. as always, she captured a person's whole soul so that certainly warranted her first oscar.
Okay after Thurman vs Travolta from Pulp Fiction being one of the most cool dances in movie history imo, this one landed right at the same level. Simply brilliant. And whole movie is an absolute masterpiece. Seen pretty much all Yorgos movies, but he has gone above and beyond here.
Bro what how did Emma do this. Her acting is insane to me. She’s the best actress
This scene lives rent free in my head
This dancing broken down shows me this pattern in their relationship.
Freedom, control, compromise, escape, and capture. There's a huge story in the dance moves
mark ATE this shit up dude
This movie deserves every single award! The acting, visuals, cinematography, costuming, set designs, it’s all FANTASTIC. Easily one of the most amazing movies of this year
I just LIVE inside this scene. So imperfectly beauty, dark, ironic, absurd, everything the human being is. This is what i love about cinema.
I don't see how is dark. Cause she is an adult woman that acts like a little girl? Sure. Just hollywood rich ppl shit in a movie. Nothing new.
I don't see how is dark. Cause she is an adult woman that acts like a little girl? Sure. Hollywood rich ppl love this. Nothing new.
EMMA DEFINITELY DESERVES ALL THE AWARDS AND THEN THE OSCAR
(Just got out of seeing the film) Yorgos always has a dance sequence to communicate clearly to the audience just what exactly is happening in the characters’s minds, this is an excellent example of the nuance in his films!
I’m absolutely fascinated by Jerskin Fendrix’s score! It really is a sound like you’ve never heard before, and that works perfectly because it gives us the same feeling as Bella discovering music and dance for the first time!
Agreed
If Emma Stone doesn't win the Oscar, I'm done with those awards.
Me too!!!
I say this every year about someone or some movies, and yet again, here we are 😅
Yesssss
She already won an oscar for la la land
@@toniohumes3082So? If you put on the best performance of the year you deserve the Oscar. It doesn’t matter if you won an Oscar already.
guy playing the 'instrument' at 0.28 is Jerskin Fendrix - the composer of the soundtrack
I haven't seen any comments about how amazing, insane, and funny Emma Stone's jerky movements are when she first gets on the dance floor, before she starts dancing. How did she do that?! It's like she's possessed. One of the many reasons I think Emma was the only one who could play Bella with such a lack of inhibition without it going too far.
Such a brilliant scene. Absolutely love the “off key” music intro. Stone and Ruffalo are brilliant in this.
That music is so fire goddamn. Incredible soundtrack
The fisheye is an amazing edition 🤩 Love that he continued using this after The Favourite. Looks great, can’t wait to see it!
I'm glad you enjoyed the fisheye (so did my wife). For me, I didn't mind that much, but it did made me think of skateboarding videos on MTV
to me its amazing how he combined spike jones music video style with stanley kubrick esque shots all in the same scene and to keep its tone is amazing
@@thisgamegavemecancer1813 That's one of the issues. Because the lenses often change around 10 times within a single scene without ample time between cutting points, it comes across as fairly arbitrary.
@@jamk2668 i should clarify i havent seen the movie yet and was commenting on this one scene but if its that way the whole movie i could see that being bothersome

Her bouncing on her feet right before dancing captured that so well!
You can quite clearly see in this film that a child's brain, as is inserted into the adult head of bella, is absolutely devoid of ego. And it is in the death of one's ego that the true personality of an individual is revealed. Revealed as a gift for the rest of humanity to observe and thus providing them the impetus to do likewise as mark ruffalo does so in following bella's lead. Wonderful scene!
Nice observation.
I'm worried about the paedophile aspects as from what I've gathered, the (mostly) older men in the sex scenes are highly attracted to her being childlike.
@@ViscountVile it was a woman’s body with the hormones intact that accelerated her mental growth. That’s why she was reading those books. You’re so damn horrible at watching a movie without thinking those things
@@ViscountVileyeah it’s portrayed as morally wrong on their part. The whole point of the film is that these nasty men are only attracted to Bella when she’s not smart, I.e can’t think for herself; she becomes intelligent and they decide she’s not appealing anymore. It’s very telling satire.
@@ViscountVilewhy do you think so much people is suddenly loving this shite?😏

I watch this more than I should. It’s my favorite movie currently.
Emma Stone now 2nd time Oscar Winner Best Actress for this MASTERPIECE in the role of a lifetime! This scene is just so ICONIC that’ll make to the film history books, and Mark Ruffalo’s perfect timing & delivery is pure Genius!!! Yorgos Lanthimos has elevated himself into God-level Filmmaker! very few filmmakers can achieve and find beauty and humor within surrealistic weirdness!
I take back what I said earlier. Saw this today. I have not previously liked this director's film, but damn this one was spot on. Weird, funny, insightful and inspiring. If Stone doesn't win Best Actress, something is wrong.
Lanthimos is my favourite director
The movie was about Hollywood rich ppl fetish, nothing else nothing more. Insightful 😅
And this is why she won her second Oscar.
This was the moment he fell in love with her i think. From being embarrassed by her childlike behavior to instantly and spontaneously jumping in to dance with her.
Albeit he was trying to control her but he expressed his love in his own understanding of it.
Beautiful scene, this film has become my number 1 of all time.

I can imagine Stanley Kuberick being a fan of Lanthimos work.
I’m sure Lanthimos himself is a big Kubrick fan.
And certainly Lanthimos is fan of Kubrick.
Both Nolan and Lanthimos appear to be fans of Kubrick.

For those who grew up with John Waters...then there was Tim Burton...now Yorgos Lanthimos thankfully is taking the reins as a major dirctor who has the will to be weird, but humanize it of course and make it accessible.
