    Praise the Lord, that was pure poetry in motion. If that was a piano concert; I don't think they missed a note. fantastic job. I don't think there was any wasted motion in the six hour performance. It is without a doubt, this is not your first "horse and pony show". You had me watching, again, and again. Praise the Lord. @07aturton Many thanks for your question. The polythene used on our 16ft x 30ft Polytunnel is Thermal Anti Fog which is 720 gauge (180 micron) and comes with a 5yr guarantee. This film has added UV A & UV B filters which dramatically reduce many fungal diseases & condensation. FOR USE WITH All crops where heat is important such as bedding/annual plants, propagation houses & over wintered vegetable production. Hope this information has helped.

    I guess we haven’t considered lower temperatures than the exterior. With our current UK climate, raising the internal temperature to achieve all year round growing conditions is absolute optimum. However, with the use of specialised polythene film to reduce light transmission and ultimately the heat along with side mesh ventilation, reduced temperatures would certainly be achievable.
    Good luck with your own construction.

    Thank you for your positive feedback. A polytunnel can be assembled on a combination of surfaces including soil, concrete or timber sleepers (like we have) A Polytunnel can be tailored with fittings to suit your site requirements. Anchors plates are buried in soft ground to secure the foundations in place, base plates are designed to create feet on a hard surface. Although our polythene covers are guaranteed for 5 years, it is not uncommon to hear they have lasted in excess of 10 years.

    We strongly recommend that any snow is cleared from polytunnel as any unnecessary excess weight can stretch or even tear the polythene in very extreme cases. On smaller polytunnels, a soft broom can be used to clear off the snow. With larger Polytunnels, a rope over the tunnel can be used with a person at each end of the rope, walk along the length of the polytunnel using the rope to dislodge the snow. if the construction instructions are correctly followed then no problems should occur.

    Hi there, We use large diameter, Z35 high tensile steel tube They’re galvanised inside and out for maximum corrosion resistance and have a much higher bending resistance too than standard mild steel. So they’re seriously strong! For even more strength and stability, and improved anchorage, ‘swage joints’ are used (a techie term meaning the tube end is reduced in diameter so tubes can be sleeved together, quickly and at low cost). Hope this information helps and good luck. Best wishes FT.

    Commercial growers could not afford to have their polytunnels damaged by extreme weather and to this end polytunnels have proved their critics wrong in withstanding the most extreme of weather conditions. If the construction instructions are correctly followed then no problems will occur. For those very exposed sites, we would recommend purchasing base rails (this helps achieve a tight cover), crop bars and triple ridge. Thank you for watching our video.

    Many thanks for watching our video and sharing your thoughtful comments. It’s nice to hear our Polytunnels being described as “fancy materials”, but we’d argue that it doesn’t require a “crapload” of money, quite the contrary really. Also two men working 6 hours to construct our structures shows that a force of labor is not necessary.

    The raised beds in our Polytunnel have been an absolute savior as the allotment site has extremely poor quality soil and horse tail weeds everywhere which are a nightmare! After the initial construction process, our raised beds require much less maintenance than our allotment friends with conventional garden beds. We definitely highly recommend raised beds.Thank you for watching our video.

    A Polytunnel is perhaps the most underrated tool in the Kitchen Garden. This 16ft wide x 30ft long Polytunnel fitted on to base rails required a polythene cover 9.2m wide x 15m long. A replacement 200 micron polythene cover would cost as little as £120 - thanks for watching our video.

  • @polytunnels
    @polytunnels  13 лет назад

    @SarzWix One of the major advantages of a polytunnel is cost. The cost of a greenhouse and polytunnel will vary greatly, depending on the type, design and size of model that is required. Generally, based on like-for-like square footage, the set-up costs for a poly tunnel will always prove the cheaper option.

  • @polytunnels
    @polytunnels  11 лет назад

    First and foremost a Polytunnel will allow you to keep lots of crops growing right through the winter and into spring. And, on those cold, crisp days when the sun does show itself, the temperature in a Polytunnel will be wonderfully warm. However, If you’ve got particularly tender or vulnerable crops or seedlings underway in a Polytunnel, they may need a little extra pampering to protect them in sub-zero conditions. A small heater or cloche hoops cover with fleece should help. Best wishes FT

    As the market leaders, the fact First Tunnels sell over 3500 Polytunnels every year and the reality Commercial growers could not afford to have their polytunnels, crops and livelihoods damaged by extreme weather, flimsy really is not an expression which represents First Tunnels structures. When Polytunnels are constructed correctly, no problems will occur proving critics wrong by withstanding the most extreme of weather conditions. Thank you for watching our video.

    Make no mistake, constructing a polytunnel is not a little project to amuse you over an idle Sunday afternoon. It would be prudent to pencil in a couple of days for a "virgin" constructor. The flip side is that if you can put together a piece of flat-pack furniture, you should have no real trouble with a polytunnel. Thank you for watching our video.

  • @polytunnels
    @polytunnels  13 лет назад

    @MarkB1ngham It does seem to suggest you have used un-stabilised polythene. All polythene will break down after time but the environmental issues arise when the polythene is buried and hidden away from sunlight as this prevents the polythene from breaking down. Our polythene is UV stabilised and even when the old covers are ready to be replaced, we would suggest trying to re-cycling it into cloche covers.

    @MarkB1ngham The only reason I can think that your piece of polythene failed after such a short period of time is possibly it was not UV stabilise? All First Tunnels polythene is UV stabilised which effectively prevents it from breaking down under its guarantee of 5 years. However, it is not uncommon to hear our covers have lasted in excess of 10 years. We have installed side guttering to collect rainwater and also used gravel around the perimeter of our Polytunnel to help with drainage.

    You guys make it look easy ! My 8x10 arrived the other day and i'm too scared to attempt it yet in case i F it up. I've read the booklet 3 times, keep looking at at all the timber and metalwork, i've watched nearly all your videos but it's still pretty daunting, does Paul fancy a holiday to the Isle of Wight to put this up? He can kip in the super therm tunnel with ground cover so he will be dry and warm hahaha. These tunnels look like they'll be solid, cheapo pop up greenhouses that last a year these aint. I think your 6 hour job will be more like 6 days for me. My plan is to put up the metalwork first then paint the wood with some timbercare paint, fit that, then wait for a nice calm day to attempt fitting the polythene.

    • @polytunnels
      @polytunnels  8 лет назад +3

      +Jammy Git Hi, simply take it stage by stage, no need to rush. Dig the holes for the foundations and then when the aches kick in, have a bath and then perform construction of the doors, rst of framework, then why not have another bath :) Get it complete ready for taping and covering and then when its a nice day with no distractions perform the covering. Good luck.

    • @JammyGit
      @JammyGit 8 лет назад +1

      First Tunnels Polytunnels Haha wow so many baths....so THAT'S what the bottle of algon is for :-)
      All weekend i've been singing 'polytunnels live longer with algon'
      On a serious note,Yes, i think it's the doors and wooden frames that i'm gonna struggle with the most but that's down to suffering with debilitating p.t.s.d since a sawmill accident that nearly took my life....i don't react well to the sound or smell of woodworking or sawdust but i have to attempt it at least.
      Thanks for the words of encouragement, i've found your company to be very friendly and helpful, especially Laura who dealt with taking my 'special' order and made the painful process of parting with over £500 a little less painful. You should give her a pay rise.....in fact you all should get 1.

    As some models of Polytunnels can weigh in access of a ton, specialist couriers/containers would we be required to transport a consignment this size to the USA. There is no definite answer to the amount of snow a Polytunnel can hold. The addition of crops bars & extra ridges will help to increase the overall strength. We advise snow is regularly cleared off the Polytunnel using a soft brush to prevent large build up of snow which in turn may freeze & add extra weight. In the UK, we have not had any significant damage to Polytunnels caused through snow.
    The cost per sq.ft. Varies according to size but a 16 x 30 (480 sq.ft.) starts at £1.85 per sq. ft.

    Amazing job! Any advice on Polytunnels for hot/warm temperatures?
    Right now I´m building a 40 ft long polytunnerl with bamboo structure instead of PVC or metal.
    I´ve read that it is possible to achieve lower temps than the exterior without any A/C using the polytunnel shaped greenhouse, just with good ventilation and fog systems during the day..
    Apparently this shape has the best sunlight distribution, similar to the atmosphere layers covering the Earth..
    Again, great job!

    Hey there,
    Do you know if there special types of polytunnels that can be put in mountain areas in the summer but can also withstand snow and weather conditions in the winter ?
    Great video by the way !
