  • Wizards and Warriors animated fantasy documentary lore video series on the world of Middle-Earth - Lord of the Rings continues with the second video on the First Age. Previously we discussed the creation of the world of Tolkien, its powers and races and we see how and why the Elves became the enemies of the Dark Lord Melkor, who they called Morgoth, after their leader Fëanor cursed him for killing his father Finwë and stealing his prized possession - Silmarils. In this episode we see how the evil first rose in the world of Arda and will talk about Ungoliant and other evils, about the Valar and Maiar, about the Elves and their sub-groups - Vanyar, Ñoldor, Teleri, and Avari ( • Beginning of the Age -... ), while this video will show the continuation of the events. In Middle-Earth, Morgoth attacks the Teleri Elves in Doriath under Thingol and his allies Cirdan and Denethor starting the War of the Jewels with the First Battle of the Beleriand. Meanwhile, in the Valinor, the Noldor Elves of Feanor attack their Teleri relatives in the First Kinslaying in order to take their ships. Afterwards, Feanor and his sons travel to the Middle-Earth in order to fight Morgoth and take the Silmarils, leading to the battles of Dagor-nuin-Giliath and Lammoth and the death of Feanor ( • Feanor Strikes Back - ... ). The third episode showed the aftermath of the death of Feanor, as the Noldor kingdoms rise in the Middle-Earth taking on Morgoth once again, this time at the battle of Dagor Aglareb, where Feanor's sons Fingolfin and Maedhros, and others fought against the Dark Lord and we also talked about the rise of the humans - the House of Edain ( • Dagor Aglareb - Noldor... ). The fourth episode will describe the battle of Dagor Bragollach and the rise of the father of Dragons Glaurung ( • Dagor Bragollach - Ris... ). In the aftermath of the defeat at the hands of Morgoth, the Elves and Men were on the back foot and the evil spread in Middle-Earth, but from those dark days, an unlikely pair rose to challenge the darkness - Beren and Lúthien ( • Beren and Lúthien - Gr... ), and defeated Morgoth ( • How Morgoth Was Defeat... ). Their tragic love story inspired Maedhros to create his Union, which attacked the Dark Lord during the Nirnaeth Arnoediad - the battle of Unnumbered Tears ( • Nirnaeth Arnoediad - B... ). As a result of the battle, many Men and Elf were made hostages, among them Húrin. In the first episode about Children of Húrin, we will talk about Morgoth's curse and the Rise of Húrin's son Túrin ( • Children of Húrin: Ris... ), while the second episode covered the Fall of Nargothrond ( • Fall of Nargothrond - ... ). The third episode is going to set up the biggest tragedy in the world created by Tolkien, as Nienor has exited Dor-Lomin and her meeting with Turin is going to happen soon The third episode is going to set up the biggest tragedy in the world created by Tolkien, as Nienor has exited Dor-Lomin and her meeting with Turin is going to happen soon ( • Biggest Tragedy In the... ). In the fourth and final episode in the mini-series on the Children of Hurin, the tragedy is complete - Turin and Nienor are dead, and so is Glaurung ( • Children of Hurin - Tr... ). After their death, the Dark Lord finally released Hurin. His return would only worsen the situation for the free people's and he would bring the curse of the Petty Dwarf Mim upon them.

With so much that has happened up to this point, it is a little overwhelming that we still got other major events still to come: The fall of Doriath, fall of Gondolin, and the War of Wrath.
While the Silmarillion book may be considered a rather dry and difficult textbook to get through, when presented in this manner and done well, you can really see and feel how much of a sprawling epic it is.

Honestly I reread Silmarillion recently and I was suprised how quick I went throught it. Even the slow beginning part in Ainulindale is just like 10 pages long.
Lots of chapters feel like they could be a standalone Hobbit length novel at minimum.

Though I have not yet read it myself, I think much of this is taken from The Fall of Gondolin book. While the Silmarillion is more of a brief overview, The Fall of Gondolin injects much more detail.

As the tragic life of Húrin meets its conclusion, doom will come to Gondolin and Doriath. The Nauglamír will have destructive consequences in the immediate and long-term for Doriath.
As for Gondolin, we'll have to go back to the story of Maeglin and his father Eöl and mother Aredhel. Since the seeds of the Fall of Gondolin were planted long before Húrin.
Ironically though, the fall of these kingdoms would lead to the foundation of Morgoth's fall.
I look forward to the continuing Middle Earth 1st Age series, and other fantasy and science-fiction lore, including any from anime/manga as major source.

Curses especially with gold are quite powerful in middle Earth- Isildur cursed the Dead Men of Dunharrow for centuries with his willpower alone. The Barrow-Wight that terrorizes Merry is cursed to haunt the graveyard forever. Sauron curses his Nine with a wretched form of immortality, Scatha's killer Fram was cursed by the dragon and got killed by the Dwarves who say he took the treasure. Glaurung cursed Turin and his entire family.
This is not Pirates of the Caribbean type of funny curse, this is a lasting negative effect on the land itself that takes a long time to clean up. Minas Morgul is seemingly permanently cursed to the concentration of evil within it, even Aragorn refused to immediately fix the place. Denethor's Palantir is cursed with the image of his burning hands, so much so that Aragorn, who has the strength to bend it away to his will, will not even try it (or cannot).

Personally feel that with Hurin we see the counter side of sticking to your oath in the face of someone far beyond you in ability and power and just highlighting how spiteful and cruel Morgoth can be, which lets be honest is not too far off from some real life dictators.
A noble deed to be sure but one that always would have ended badly.
Funny thing is it probably costed Morgoth as well, since during this point every time he used his magic he diminished in power.

Small correction, the House of Durin was not involved in this the Broadbeams and Firebeards were, those are two different Houses.
(for those wondering the House of Durin is also known as the Longbeards, the names of the other Houses are unknown.)
Edit: realized I worded that last part poorly, what I meant was that we don't know the names of the Fathers of the other Houses but their other names are known.
For those interested the names of the Seven Houses are; Longbeards, Broadbeams, Firebeards, Ironfists, Stiffbeards, Stonefoots and Blacklocks.
The House of Durin was the largest and eldest of the Houses (all other Houses acknowledged them as such), they also maintained friendship with the Elves the longest.
The upcoming events did little to strain that, only after the Balrog was unleashed from the depths did their relationship with the elves begin to take a nosedive.

Legolas’s father might have been present during the sack. He might not have. Either way, he didn’t care that the line of Durin wasn’t responsible for the sacking of Doriath. Khazad-Dum wasn't rich in iron and had to export a lot of it from the Iron Hills so the East gate probably saw a lot of traffic pass by or around Lothlorien.

It is mentioned in the Tale of Years that many dwarves from the ruined cities in the Blue Mountains moved to Moria and swelled its numbers.

@@Apollo1989V In The Sindar Princes it is told that Oropher and his son, Thranduil were in Doriath before its fall but it is not clear if they were actually there when the Nogrodrim sacked it, as Sindar nobles traveled east to look for their own places to rule, often deliberately avoiding the Noldor.
Oropher died in the Last Alliance's war on Mordor, leaving Thranduil to return with one third of the army and become king of the Forest Elves. The bickering and the numerous misunderstandings with both Khazad-dum and its successor state Erebor is what caused Legolas' people to dislike Dwarves of whatever house. It didn't get better with the War of Dwarves and Orcs , where their kin in Lorien saw the entire Dimrill Dale cut down for firewood, or during the War of Five Armies where lots of Elves died but also had imprisoned the King Under The Mountain and his Party on the way. Thranduil was especially haughty here.
On a side note, in the Appendices it is stated that the Dwarves who fled the sinking of Beleriand and the other tragedies in the west fled to Khazad-dum and joined with Durin's own house the Longbeards, living under the three peaks with their kin. Bifur. Bofur and Bombur were "not of the line of Durin" and are noticably all redbeards; which means their blood was likely from Nogrod, who were called the Firebeards. So by this time all Dwarves known to Middle Earth's free people were called "Durin's Folk" even when they were not necessarily his literal kin.
