Wizards and Warriors animated fantasy documentary lore video series on the world of Middle-Earth - Lord of the Rings continues with the second video on the First Age. Previously we discussed the creation of the world of Tolkien, its powers and races and we see how and why the Elves became the enemies of the Dark Lord Melkor, who they called Morgoth, after their leader Fëanor cursed him for killing his father Finwë and stealing his prized possession - Silmarils. In this episode we see how the evil first rose in the world of Arda and will talk about Ungoliant and other evils, about the Valar and Maiar, about the Elves and their sub-groups - Vanyar, Ñoldor, Teleri, and Avari ( • Beginning of the Age -... ), while this video will show the continuation of the events. In Middle-Earth, Morgoth attacks the Teleri Elves in Doriath under Thingol and his allies Cirdan and Denethor starting the War of the Jewels with the First Battle of the Beleriand. Meanwhile, in the Valinor, the Noldor Elves of Feanor attack their Teleri relatives in the First Kinslaying in order to take their ships. Afterwards, Feanor and his sons travel to the Middle-Earth in order to fight Morgoth and take the Silmarils, leading to the battles of Dagor-nuin-Giliath and Lammoth and the death of Feanor ( • Feanor Strikes Back - ... ). The third episode episode showed the aftermath of the death of Feanor, as the Noldor kingdoms rise in the Middle-Earth taking on Morgoth once again, this time at the battle of Dagor Aglareb, where Feanor's sons Fingolfin and Maedhros, and others fought against the Dark Lord and we also talked about the rise of the humans - the House of Edain ( • Dagor Aglareb - Noldor... ). The fourth episode will describe the battle of Dagor Bragollach and the rise of the father of Dragons Glaurung ( • Dagor Bragollach - Ris... ). In the aftermath of the defeat at the hands of Morgoth, the Elves and Men were on the back foot and the evil spread in the Middle-Earth, but from those dark days, an unlikely pair rose to challenge the darkness - Beren and Lúthien ( • Beren and Lúthien - Gr... ), and defeated Morgoth ( • How Morgoth Was Defeat... ). Their tragic love story inspired Maedhros to create his Union, which attacked the Dark Lord during the Nirnaeth Arnoediad - the battle of Unnumbered Tears.

In some of the older notes of Tolkien it said that the person from which Melkor will meet his final end would be none other than Túrin
Hurin's family fate was cruel, but what would you say about souls tortured for eternity like for example in warp space in W40k.
In the aftermath of the battle the dead Elves and Edain were piled into a mound that would be called Haudh-en-Nirnaeth (Hill of Tears)/Haudh-en-Ndengin (Hill of the Slain). Afterwards it became covered in grass becoming a green mound in a burned and ruined land of Anfauglith.
Among the dead was Húrin's brother Huor, he had only been married for two months before the battle to Rían a kinswoman of Beren. Months later, Rían after giving birth to Tuor leaving him in the care of the Elves, came to the mound and died of grief when she heard no word of his fate.
You should have mentioned Húrin’s defiant battle cry while covering Turgon’s retreat.

Yeah also one of my favorite metal albums but it had some missed opportunities imo.
They failed to mention that Fingolfin actually managed to hurt Morgoth several times with a wound that never healed.
They could have made a very epic song about the host of Valinor including the Vanyar and the Noldor of Finarfin finally marching upon Angband, about Finarfin fighting with Sauron "wuth Songs of Power" wich would just be perfect to be adapted in Song (although Clamavi de Profundis') version is although awesome and maybe most importantly about Eärendil and his yourney. I actually cannot understand why they didn't really mention him at all but made a whole song about Maeglin.

I like the fact that Cirdan of the Falas, Mablung and Beleg Strongbow of the Sindar Elves marched to war with their Noldor brethen.

cannot wait for the Fall of Gondolin! It is one of the most epic battles of middle earth
I've just started reading CJRT's edited version of The Fall of Gondolin although I've already read the version he edited for Book Two of The Book of Lost Tales which was quite astonishing in its epic and tragic breadth.
I hope the coming of Tuor to Gondolin is shown with the Seven Gates of Gondolin. Each Gate was unique in its design and layout from Wood, Stone, Bronze, Iron, Silver, Gold and Steel.
Still dont understand how Morgoth was unable to find Gondolin. He had bats, ravens etc, dont know for sure about winged dragons...still...seems far streached. He is the king in Beleriand at that time.
@@deathstroke2697 I think eagles patrolled the encircling hills and mountains preventing any aerial encroachment but even then, Morgoth should've been able to work out Gondolin's location by a process of deduction so yes, it's arguable that Tolkien maybe stretched that particular plot device a little too far.
@@keyboarddancers7751 the only explanation I can think of is well *magic* as yes a process of deduction would work especially considering how close it was.
Seems like in the first age of Middle Earth at least, the more pissed off an elf is, the closer they get towards the gates of Angband and Morgoth. :D That being said, rage is always tempered by destruction as seen time and time again in Tolkien's lore. Good to keep a level head it seems! Great video W&W, looking forward to the fall of Gondolin!

I've read the Silmarillion many times. There are passages which I have come to love greatly. I will still remember this one as one of my first favorites. Tolkien does such a beautiful job of showing the power of brotherhood here, but also the effect of hope being kindled in a dark time.
Elves don't use magic to stay immortal, that's just their nature.
Only in Valinor, in the 2nd age they started to diminish, the 3 elven rings slowed that down, once the one ring was destroyed and ages past, the elves that stayed eventually passed away
@@sir2069 Diminish in nobility and power, yes. Lose immortality in any sense - absolutely not. None of them "passed away" from old age. Adult Elves do not age, period.

@dIRECT0R I didn't watch that show, and yes after the 4th age when all the elves left, the rest that stayed by the 5th or 6th age of middle Earth did vanish
@@sir2069 Maybe, maybe not. However they did, they ceertainly didn't expire from old age or disease. They will live for as long as the world does. That is explicit in the lore.

It might be prudent to point out that it was the betrayal of the traitor Easterlings that prevented the eastern host from reaching their target in time.
This enabled the western host to be taunted and lured.
Great Video, one minor mistake though. In the Silmarillion, it is specifically mentioned, that Thingol forbid Mablung and Beleg to fight with the sons of Feanor, so they were part of the western hosts under Fingon. You placed them on the eastern side under Maedhros, wich contraticts Tolkiens writing.

Yeah, it bugged me the entire video as Mablung is my favorite elf
It should noted that Húrin and his brother Huor were the first Men to arrive in Gondolin, after being rescued by Thorondor's eagles.
They were allowed to leave under an oath of silence by King Turgon, even though the law of the city forbade the leaving of outsiders once they entered.
Overall amazing video, but I can't believe you left out the Aurë entuluva bit! It's the best thing in the whole Silmarillion! The funeral procession of the dwarves was awesome though.

The dwarves of Belegost literally became a cause of fear to the personification of fear itself , Glaurong . Azaghal raised his warriors well .
Only if Morgoth were a little brave he would be soloing the whole flanking army by himself only if someone told him he was immortal .
Actually Morgoth's his power diminished as he created new lies and creatures of evil
What always bothered in the aftermath of this battle is how both the Elves and the Valar unfairly treated the Easterlings and other tribes of Men from Middle-Earth. Yes, Ulfang's people betrayed the League of Maedhros, but Bór's people remained loyal and fought till the end. However, the Elves ceased all relationships with Men, aside from the Houses of Beor, Haladin and Hador, and the Valar forsook all Men from Middle-Earth. Because one clan betrayed them, the rest of the race of Men had to suffer.
Is it any surprising that several clans of Men resented the Númenóreans and ended up joining Sauron during the Second and Third Ages?
The Valar abandoned Men from the start, left them to their own devices to stand against Morgoth on their own. Primitive Men trying to stand against Morgoth, which not even the Noldor could do in the peak of their might, it isnt surprising that so many were corrupted. Not only that, Eru himself punished Men for not being to withstand it. All in all, Men had the deck stacked against them, and it is surprising that so many living under the dark for generations still chose good.

Let's compare:
The Valar went to war after knowing that Melkor captured and corrupted some Elves vs the Valar did nothing to prevent Morgoth from corrupting so many Men
The Valar guided the Elves to Valinor in order to nurture them vs the Valar forbade Men from ever going to Valinor, including the Numenoreans, under the implicit threat of extinction
The Valar kept aiding the Elves even after the Three Kinslayings vs the Valar never aided Men in general
The Valar were willing to forgive the Sons of Feanor (aka the guys that commited three kinslayings and that stole two Silmarills) vs the Valar abandoned the Men from Middle-Earth because some of them bought into Morgoth's lies and joined the latter
@@lisboah the men are not to inherit middle earth, their journey is in the afterlife.
@@lisboah Ah, but the men have the Gift of Iluvatar: Death.
How is that a gift? Well, of all the races, men are the only ones who actually leave the world of Arda when they die. Where they go no one knows (not even Mandos), but the key thing is that they go somewhere special to be with Eru Iluvatar (Tolkien alludes this to be a secular form of Heaven).
Elves, meanwhile, are stuck on Arda forever. They cannot get out and they won't ever be with Eru Iluvatar, which from a certain perspective is a fate worse than death. They have nowhere better to look forward to, when they die they go to the Halls of Waiting and wait until the end of the world which may take so long it might feel like meaningless eternity.
The dwarves? They were made by Aule the Smith and so are part of the physical land. The elves believe that when the dwarves die they return to the stone from whence they came , but they are stuck on Arda like everyone else even though they don't go to the Halls of Waiting.
The Varda are tied to the world as well. They accepted that fate when they chose to come down from the Heavens, to give up their celestial nature and become a physical part of reality.
All other living things are of Arda, therefore they are Arda. The only thing that isn't is man, so both the Varda and the elves resent man for having this gift -- of joining Eru at the end when they cannot.
@@Ishkur23 That's true, but Men have no idea about this gift. And, even if they did, I think many of them would have preferred the gifts bestowed on the Elves, such as immortal life, stronger bodies and etc.

Awesome video. And I am excited for the next episode. The children of hurin is one of my favorites books. It is a very complete story that really feels like saga and a tragedy mixed together so well.

Great video but you had a mistake in the visuals.
You had Beleg and Mablung's icons in the East with the sons of Feanor.
They were only given leave by Thingol to join the union under the condition that they were only to take up arms alongside the house of Fingolfin. So they should have been shown with Fingon in the Western host.

For all they imply to care about the people of Middle-Earth, the Doom of Mandos and the actions of other Valar seems to only hamper any attempt to stop the Great Enemy. They surely seem as imperfect Greek gods.
The logic seems to be that the Valar could easily overpower Morgoth again, and someday will; he won't win forever. But in the meantime they cannot let the Elves be the victors for fear they'll go on to become even worse in their arrogance; given that the entire thing started with mass slaughter just to get their way.
First bit is not true second bit is correct . hindsight 20/20 you also have to remember. Our understanding is by the account of the elves . We have only partial picture and partial picture of that..
Let's not forget that Turgon sent several times an envoy to Valinor in order ask the Valar for aid, and the Valar denied every turn. And yet, after all these attempts, Ulmo somehow expected them to listen to his warnings later on. This is like the opposite of the "The boy who cried wolf" fable.
They are imperfect, yes, but they don’t screw with the lives like the pagan gods. Fëanor committed unspeakable crimes and made a terrible oath with his sons. In marching out to Middle Earth, Fëanor basically said that they don’t need the Valar. Ulmo tried his best to help the exiles, but pride and the Doom of Mandos worked against his efforts.
I don’t think the Valar are very comparable to the Greek pantheon, the mistakes of the Greek gods were caused selfishly pursing their all too human desires, whereas the potential mistakes by the Valar come from sincere desire but imperfect understanding in following Eru’s will for his Children, especially in balancing their charge to care for the children while respecting the free will of the Children, and the consequences that came with it

Another compelling great video on the war of the jewels and one its most bloody and destructive battles. Problem was that the elves for all their strength and might could never win against Morgoth with the doom of manwae upon them. As to defeat the devil in god form, they needed the power and might of his fellow gods to defeat him, which they would only gain once they had absolved themselves of their former sins.

The Dwarven King: supplies the army, shows up with a host, surrounds the father of all dragons, gets crushed, stabs the creature in the belly, makes it run away, dies, refuses to elaborate

Fantastic account of the battle, so much easier to visualize the actual flanking maneuvers tactics overall. Tolkien never did have enough maps. A collection of half finished notes, drafts, and ideas from various letters edited into something resembling a novel covering roughly the same time period has more developed and realistic characters along with a much better story than that $500 million tv series.

Hi. As shown in the video, beleg and mablung went to maedhroses host. They infact went to fingons, as thingol did not permit them to fight under a son of feanor

All i ask is to one day be able to see the Nirnaeth Arnoediad along with many other events of the first age on the big screen
This is one of many reasons why i absolutely adore silmarillion book and read it over and over again. Elves, dwarves and humans are so bad ass in it. And silmarillion shows how flawed the elves are and that is why i like them. They are not so different from humans at the end of the day. (Of course i do understand that all art is a reflection and study of ourselves&humanity and that is cool also)
Maybe one of my favorite things about the Nirnaeth Arnoediad is the build up in the Children of Húrin.
The moments in Dor-Lomin where he rode of in hope, the beginnings of the battle where the armies of Fingon qnd Maedhros marched towards Thangorodrin when they realized Turgon opened the gates of Gondolin to come to their aid. It also has one hell of a quote: _Utúlie'n aurë! Aiya Eldalië ar_ _Atanatári, utúlie'n aurë! The day_ _has come! Behold, people of the Eldar_ _and Fathers of Men, the day_ _has come!' And all those who heard_ _his great voice echo in the hills_ _answered crying: 'Auta i lómë! The_ _night is passing!'_ which is paid of later perfectly with Hurin's cries of _'Aurë entuluva' Day shall come again_

I have been waiting SOOOO long for this one. Toss up between this n fall of Gondolin. If he does that battle video could be like an hour long. There's like half a book about the fight alone....Lost tales 2? I believe.
It's right up there with Wheel of Time 'The last battle' in terms of epic-ness and detail. Sanderson is probably unparalleled in writing set piece warfare

There are, but the a-hole ratio is incredibly high.
Eru Iluvatar doesn't work against the elves. The Valar are more like elder brothers than creators.
@@ducovanderwoude6971 Eru has moral beliefs too. Manwe consults him directly at times. He seems to be a bit dickish at times as well - referencing every time someone non-elven or non-maia/vala wants to go across the sea to the lands of the valar. Specifically the destruction of Numenor.

Although it is only featured in the sponsorship part of this video, it would be greatly appreciated by myself and I'm sure others, if you could ommit using imagery from Amazon's Rings of Power series, as it misrepresents (intentionally, I might add) specific descriptions by Tolkien himself and goes agains the otherwise amazing visual presentation of these videos. Otherwise, these are always a treat to watch and the inclusion of direct quotes and wider context of battles make them feel that much more impactful (like Hurin's curse).

I think that trolls are a little too big in here. I remember reading an article that in the first age, orcs and trolls were far weaker than in the third age, since power of good was stronger and influence of evil lesser, and it was Sauron and Saruman that improved Melkor's original design of orcs, making them bigger, stronger and resistent to sun, what made dragons and balrogs so crucial, as his armies of orcs couldnt win against the elves and men on their own.
I think trolls should be somewhere between elf and balrog in terms of size here, but thats just a minor notice from my side.

It is a pity that you'd chose to talk about the Easterling treachery from the House of Ulfang without mentioning the House of Bór that remained faithful to the Noldor and laid down their lives in the battle. You might also have understated how much damage that treachery did to the union.
Yeah, both Bór and his people were faithful till the end, and yet their sacrifice would never be remembered. His people, in hindsight, might have been rewarded better had they decided to join Morgoth.
It sucks that there are situations that it's actually better to side with the forces of evil rather than with the forces of good.
I mean.. Ulfang's betrayal is counted as the greatest betrayal, tragedy, and worst memory of all living creatures in the entire history of Arda.. So.... Yeah I think they properly stated how bad it was. It is the sole reason the world is so horrifically crappy. If they remained faithful, Morgoth may have been destroyed or at least contained within Angband itself. But Ulfang is the sole reason the entire story of Middle-Earth exists as it does.

The Elves don't resent the Valar and Maiar for what Morgoth and Sauron have done. The Elves, as a race, never had to suffer for what Feanor, his sons, and Maeglin had done.
Heck, Turin Turambar can be blamed for the destruction of Nargothrond and he is mostly seen as a tragic hero, not as a prideful and reckless man.
@@lisboah The Noldor went back to Middle-Earth despite the many times the Valar told them to calm themselves because they would not be able to take on Morgoth, and only said "well fuck you" after the 1st kinslaying and only to those that didn't turn back and seek forgiveness like Finarfin did.
With exception of the Sindar, the Nandor and other elves were as endangered by Morgoth as Men, see how the Laiquendi's budding kingdom collapsed after a single battle.
In the Children of Hurin there is as many people that call Turin out on his idiocity as his stans, and even he sometimes acknowledges he is an idiot.
Lastly, Ulfang and other Easterlings that sided with Morgoth were immediately betrayed by him and sent to cold Hithlum instead of lands in Beleriand they wanted to get, so no, not much reward serving Morgoth.

Regarding:
Noldor: Manwe sent the Eagles to aid the Noldor, and Ulmo occasionaly came to aid them.
Sindar: they were protected most of the time by Melian. Their kingdom was destroyed because of Thingol's greed and obsession with the silmarill.
Ulfang: they at the very least got lands. Bór's people apparently were slaughtered while keeping their oaths, and the Elves never aknowledged their sacrifice. They only received death for being faithful.
Regarding Men as a race: is it fair that the clans of Men residing in the East, who never heard of the Valar or Morgoth, were abandoned by the Valar and forever regarded as evil because some of their cousins went west and joined Morgoth? Imagine if the Valar expelled all the Elves from Valinor because of what Feanor had done.

So I know how this story goes but I feel like saddest battle I heard in J. R. R Tolkien wrote
