I thought the same thing...this is probably the biggest audience a lot of them have played for and my heart breaks for them that it had to be this experience. I hope they're all ok.
I feel bad for the kids in this show. I blame the adults. As someone who used to be a Catholic I still remember that lying is one of the 10 commandments. This church said they had permission from the Hamilton team to do this but nope they LIED which is hypocritical
I can sincerely imagine one of the kids in the cast potentially being gay and being so excited that they got to perform in a version of Hamilton (considering how important Broadway and theater is to LGBTQ+ recognition). Then they would only have their hopes dashed when they heard their pastor hurl homophobic vitriol at the end. And then to rub salt into the wound they would be mocked and derided online. That's just heartbreaking to me.
Having grown up in these spaces I have a horrible feeling that these kids hear way worse all the time because he was so casual about it.🤢🤮 I hope when they get some age and distance from the situation they don't blame themselves.
I mean, it’s a play put on by their own church. I can’t believe they’d be under any illusion that their church known for inserting religious messaging into known plays would suddenly put on a queer friendly production.
@@Zarastro54 not that they would expect it to be pro queer, but they would think that its simply not a factor in this fun thing they're trying to do that does not mention queer people. So they're probably not expecting the topic at all.
I have been actively avoiding Scamilton for a while now because I extensively covered Hamilton for 2 semesters in college but the part with Its Quiet Uptown is actually infuriating. I wanted to write one of my main essays about It's Quiet Uptown, but the Hamilton bible, as my class referred to it (the annotated book from Lin), had almost no notes in it because of the severity of events associated with the song. I cannot imagine being Lin and seeing what happened there. The song was deeply important for the original members of Hamilton, as two of the ensemble members had their child die right before they started rehearsing that song. Lin actually sent the demo of the song to them and offered to cut it if it was too much. Apparently the song was incredibly impactful and helped the two move through their grief and recover from the loss of their child. Having any part of the show, but especially that part be chopped into religious messaging is painful to hear, especially with the context of the song's creation.
I felt very much the same. That song is personal, because it helped me process my father's death when it happened. It still makes me cry to this day, and to think someone appropriates it for their own gain feels like disrespecting him to me.
Eliza losing her son honestly made me emotional (mostly due to the original show), like I got pretty close to crying...then she screamed destroying the mic and I burst out laughing
As someone who was in an illegal production of a show as a kid, I imagine most of these kids didn't realize that this type of production is illegal. (I.e. licensing is not out for Hamilton, nor are directors allowed to make such cuts to a show regardless.) I imagine they were all super excited to do this show, especially when the adults around them said the Hamilton team gave them such special permission to do so. But, as someone who has had their own work on stage and seen it get torn apart without even discussing it with me.... It's frustrating. There's a lack of care for the art itself. Will this directly and financially impact LMM? No. Would it have impacted any other smaller and upcoming playwright? Yes. There's a reason why every performance of Lion King, of Jersey Boys, of Noises Off, and of 9 to 5 starts and ends the same way. You're not allowed to add to that. You're not allowed to change the script without express permission. When you change the show, you're telling the people watching it that, "Hey, this is exactly how the playwright wrote this and they were okay with it." I would be furious if I, a bi/ace writer, took my work, added homophobic language to the show, and then told everyone that "Hey, it's what the playwright wrote." I'd be absolutely infuriated. There's no way you're putting my name on that. And I see people saying copyright shouldn't exist. When, in reality, it protects this from happening. It protects smaller artists like me from having this happen. This entire situation frustrates me as both a performer and a writer. The people in charge HAD to know that this was not legal in the slightest. The promotional material I saw had no mention of where they got the supposed licensing from. No mention of LMM as a writer. Nada. It was never a legal production. I feel so bad for the people involved that just wanted to perform. That didn't know they were taking part in something illegal. They just wanted to perform.
Thank you for sharing your story. I agree with you one hundred percent. It's not fair to anyone involved that the church leaders lied and then to add insult to injury the poor kids got cyber bullied for weeks when I know as a kid who grew up in the church how little agency they have in this stuff.
No joke I saw someone defending the church in the comments of another video about Scamilton. Saying they didn’t do anything wrong and it wasn’t copyright infringement because they changed lyrics, added stuff, and removed songs/parts of songs and compared it to a cover saying it should fall under fair use. Like okay tell me you don’t think IP should be protected without telling me I guess. I know of one Hamilton parody and it is very clearly a parody. There’s no way you’d confuse the two. When, in the case of Scamilton, someone who is a fan of Hamilton could walk into it thinking they’re going to get to see it without having to go to Broadway…only to find out that it’s a cheap rip-off. I’d have walked out long before the intermission.
I wanna mention people who complain about copyright tend to mean how bigger companies abuse it to attack the public domain and transformative content. Other than that completely agree!
@@hilkekuijken4826 The issue with copyright is such a nuanced topic that I find so interesting but so confusing. I don't know shit about legal stuff, so I'm not one to talk about it, but I remember watching an interesting Tom Scott video about it that I highly recommend!
Copyright really shouldn't exist, it empowers those with the most money not artists or creators of any kind. I understand your complaints and as a pan person I would also hate if anything I made got changed into hate speech. I despise the concept of our dead creative commons even more as hateful people will take and change what ever they want, law be dammed.
I can't beleive they still let Eliza say she wanted Alex to burn. In any church I've been to, harboring any sort of anger toward someone who hurt you is a no-no. You have to be able to forgive them instantly and let go of any anger (which I think is exceedingly unhealthy, btw).
Agreed...my church culture was the same and I still struggle with guilt if I can't immediately move on after someone hurts me because we were taught that not forgiving makes us "just as bad".
What I love/hate about this is how they actively made their marriage LOOK WORSE because of this. Might be my (ex-)catholic perspective, but marriage always felt like such an important sacrament to me. Elizah's devotion to their marriage portrayed in this song felt a lot more like that sacrament than "Yo, you know what's important now? JESUS!"
someone else pointed out someone in the audience at the end was wearing an OFFICIAL hamilton shirt like i feel so bad. a possible theatre kid sees a performance of hamilton in their own town. on the other hand i find the idea of someone enjoying this version and looking into the original really funny. (i know this video is from 3 months ago but i love a good video essay)
Thank you so much for watching! I just feel so bad for all the unsuspecting fans and the kids in the show. It's a big mess. And yes if they like this version, they'll probably hate the real one. 😅
Gosh this! I've been in every stage play production of my school as a kid and I am SO happy that smartphones and yt didn't exist back then (and my dad wasn't tech savy either, so we didn't even have a videocamera). Dodged a bullet!!!
Same… I mean, you can rag on the preachy Jesus-ness all you want, but I think we should collectively agree to cut these actors some slack. I have been in _so_ many low-quality productions, so making fun of them would make me a hypocrite. Plus a lot of them have a lot of potential! It’s just a shame they were forced into… whatever this is, and are now forever associated with it.
This makes me so mad for so many reasons. As you said, it's fucked up that they took this musical that broke boundaries for the stage in terms of inclusivity/diversity. So, to basically shit in the face of that is just disgusting. Also, coming from a theatre background, it pisses me off that they stole intellectual property and messed with it. A piece of art is made a specific way for a reason because it's how the artist envisioned it. When you change it without permission, you're defiling their vision. I dealt with this shit at every theatre I've worked at because they were in predominantly christian areas. If you can't do the show as it was written, then just don't do it. Obviously, no hate to the actors here. They seem like they just loved the performing arts and wanted to share their passion with their community. On the other hand, how dare the high ups in the church both steal intellectual property and then lied about stealing it, then proceeded to make the show about following Christian values when they just ignored two of the 10 commandments One last thing, my blood BOILED at the pastor saying people struggle with homosexuality. The only reason I struggled with being gay was because so many Christians taught me that I was disgusting. They don't realize I cried so goddamn many nights praying to be "normal". Finally coming to terms with being gay was the BIGGEST relief and one of the HAPPIEST moment in my life. For the first time in years I felt good about myself. This makes me so upset. Tbh, I hope they get sued and the money goes towards helping the LGBTQ+ community Sorry for my rant
Oh I agree with all of this, you are super on point. I've been ranting about this all week and made the video in hopes that saying my peace may help me and maybe others with the ensuing religious trauma this stuff stirs up. My jaw dropped seeing the head pastor lie openly from the pulpit and the likening of being gay with alcoholism....oooof 😡😡😡 Like even the Christians I know are pissed about this. Thank you for sharing your perspective...I hope you're surrounded by better people these days who support you. 💛
Hey, it's been quite a long time since you wrote this comment but I just came from another video about "Illegal Hamilton" and Lin Manuel-Miranda said he would sue them and that the money would go to something related to LGBTQ+, I don't remember what, I don't know how the suing process went though.
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff When I was outed, my childhood friend compared me being trans and gay to being an alcoholic and drug addict ("it's an addiction you can overcome with God's help") and now I've cut her off and I'm thriving
@@carterjames3894 I'm glad you cut her off. It pisses me off that this is still an accepted notion in church spaces to this day. It's just super mega wrong
I was talking to my friend, who also loves Hamilton. I was like: “hey what if kidz bop covered Hamilton lmao” we both sat in silence imagining the horror.
"The ladies say my shot! is just the same as my pops" is quite possibly the best Kidzbop-ified line because of the sheer confusion it causes and because of how the actual line was not bad at all. Like, Anthony Ramos makes it a bit spicy because of his little dance move but you don't have to do that, mentioning attractiveness is no different than Helpless or Satisfied lol
Right?? Like maybe I've been on the internet way too long but I swear the revised line sounds more suggestive than the original and just makes me thoroughly uncomfortable.
The Hamilton team made a statement that they were pursuing legal action and withing the week the church settled out of court for an undisclosed amount.
My favorite thing is the post Phillip death bible scene is it is the perfect example of what you were talking about with the God and King George parallels. Specifically with the Kill your friends and family. That is literally what they said God did to Hamilton once you add that monologe.
What I hate about It is that Hamilton can have a "Christian" message if you squint, you have a commited wife that is until the very end with her man, Hamilton I am pretty sure was a Christian and the story treats cheating as the horrible thing that is, there is no explicit homosexual content, so if they are homophobic they didn't even have to mention it. What I hate about Christian content, is the necesity to have everything to be preachy and in your face, as if people being good and kind wasn't enough to have Christian values and messaging. I am not religious and I don't Support what they did But what really insults me is people that don't respect my intelligence as a member of the audience.
It's true, Hamilton had a bit of a complicated history with the church but there's definitely references to Christian values and imagery and the pastor could just have given a sermon at the end about that. If I remember correctly, my old church did something similar with Les Miserables back when the movie came out. The thing that upsets me the most is how casual the homophobia is in the church...I feel like the pastor didn't even think about what he said and probably doesn't think he did anything wrong.
Holy shit, I'm in a really fragile mental state right now and this... I'm at a loss for words. As you know, I just finished my show with a small community theater group that I've grown very close with, so I'm going through it right now. The Scamilton situation is something that was funny at first, but now that I've looked into it, I'm just kind of sad and angry. Some of these kids remind me so much of my mom's students, and as someone who now works with kids, it just breaks my heart.
You just summed up exactly how I feel. This one was a lot for me. I'm still going to do a video on their beauty and the beast so I can rant about how they messed with my favorite fairy tale and most people don't have access to that one but wow are we done with religious content for a while after that. A lot of the kids reminded me of myself when I was that age and I want to have a leftist aunt chat with the adults in their lives. I hope when they gain the age and distance to understand the situation they don't blame themselves. I hope you feel better soon and feel free to skip/not finish the videos if the subject matter isn't good for your mental health. 💛
I feel so bad for those kids. I hope that this and the vitriol that they ( unfairly ) got online doesn't discourage them from trying to perform professionally. I also hope that future casting directors don't discriminate against those kids just because they were involved in this. A lot of those kids have raw talent and deserve the chance to further nurture that and show it off if they choose to.
Exactly, like I get it...it's not a good play in any way but I would bet money that they couldn't hear and are so young and arrrrgghhh. I always make it a point to be kind when reviewing stuff and only make good faith criticism but it was especially important to me now with all that they're probably dealing with. I'm afraid the same is probably true of the beauty and the beast play.
It’s making me think kidz bop. Taking something “inappropriate”in this case secular and making it “appropriate” or religious. It really annoys me that they are trying to capitalize off something successful instead of doing an actual religious play.
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff I’m pretty sure the uh bible has stories they could have used instead of altering someone’s work they didn’t even have permission to use
Bless you for including animatics from Szin. They were my introduction to the play and I watch them all the time. Even if they're incomplete, I feel like they portray emotions and intentions more than a play at face value because they don't have to play to audience.
A small semirelated note, if I may: Animatics aren't "incomplete". They're literally meant to be animated storyboarding keyframes _for_ animators to then use when they draw sequences. It would be like calling a movie script scene incomplete because it's the dialogue and set directions and not the filmed scene. There's plenty of times where _because_ animatics are basically animation storyboards they have to use more exaggerated expressions and motions and medium instructions, which tends to highlight things a LOT better and less subtly than a final animation. (Sorry for the soapboxing, Disney/Pixar making-of VHS extras kid here who is sad that so many people discount the value and completeness of animatics because most people think it's a rough draft of the final animation instead of its own full process.)
I feel like I should let you know... that's my church. I mean, I went to the one in San Antonio, but the guy who said he got in touch with a representative to get a license? I know him... well. He's nuts. His name is Pastor Roman Gutierrez. He has apparently died twice. Good stuff.
Oh wow, thank you for sharing. That's....intense. I just barely started to scratch the surface of the network of churches and I have to say I felt way in over my head after just a couple paragraphs.
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff I will say, you've done a good job covering their churches, more so than anyone else I've seen. Most people just stop at the musical stuff, which is the tip of the iceberg. I'll give some more context, But let me know if you have any questions I can answer. I need to let someone know what they've stumbled across, lol. The church that performed this is one part of the congregation with churches all over the world, even in places where they would be illegal, like China or Russia, though they are most present in America. Every year, some of the bigger churches have a conference in which people from all over the world congregate to have sermons preached at them. During these conferences, the musicals are performed for the children while the adults sit in the "adult service" listening to sermons. On the last day of conference, the play or musical is performed for the rest of the church. I can confirm that every single one of these larger churches that have these conferences perform these plays. I've helped write, build sets in, and act in these plays, though for the longest time we never streamed them, so no one really knew. This church has had a very troubled history, and I can go in more in depth if you would like, but that just about covers the context for the musicals and plays people are discovering.
I really appreciate the inside info. I'm sorry that it sounds like it was a lot on you guys. I have (and am currently working on a video for) the beauty and the beast one from this same church. I stumbled across some of the conference clips on the main church's channel but had nowhere to put them in this video. I did want to ask, only if you're ok answering, what your experience working on the plays was like. My church did similar things (on a much smaller scale to be fair) and the kids who participated at least had fun to the best of my knowledge but I've read some pretty disturbing claims about how tough the leadership of churches from this network can be on particularly teens in the program. Again only share what you're comfortable sharing and you can email me at the address in my about section if that's easier or if you want the beauty and the beast copy I have for any reason.
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff Oh... you're gonna hear some shit, alright. I'm definitely going to send you an email the second I get a chance. You are correct, the leaders are incredibly tough and do a lot of coercive practices on the children they put in their plays. And don't worry, I'm definitely comfortable talking about anything, I've been prepping for a while to talk about this on my own channel when I have the time.
As someone who has been in the theatre scene for like 8+ years. Even with a liscense you can be sued heavy for messing up individual words depending on the agreement. I'm talking (you keep messing up you need to go because we will be sued out of existence) level of you can't play games with that so I'm shocked the lawyers didn't put the hammer down so hard the church closed
I think they went relatively easy on them because they're a church and Americans don't like churches being sued which is a whole different subject on it's own honestly.
After watching this video and one other video about this play, I’ve realised that they probably cut 80% of Angelica’s stuff and did her dirty like that because they didn’t like the implications that Alexander and Angelica were still in love with each other even though they married separate people, and since this seems to be a more conservative-leaning church (not to mention Hammy boy is the main character and it’d be much harder to cut him out lmao) they probably decided to just blame that all on Angelica for being a devious temptress or something and yeeted her from the play
It totally could be, but honestly I still have questions for them if that was the reason. 1) the whole point they want to make is that Hamilton needs God so even if I agreed with what they did I'd wonder if dwelling on his "sins" wouldn't serve a narrative purpose and 2) there are other things kept in that are even more suggestive than what was cut so I have overall questions on what kind of criteria outlined those decisions overall. Months later and I'm still confused. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. ☺️
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff there are two types of protagonists in Christian media: either the one who's an absolute paragon who can't sin because "he'll look bad", or the one who's so flawed he's straight-up unlikable. Obviously because Hamilton is the titular character and he's portrayed as "the good guy" in the musical, the pastor of Scamilton's church figured he was the former and not the latter. This meant they leveled out his flaws and made him the "good guy who doesn't need God and thinks he can totally rely on himself but also has to be a paragon to the children and thus he can't commit adultery", thus removing any form of climax and making the whole thing the story of a guy who does good, does one bad thing, and then God and literally everyone else in his neighborhood disses on him for that one time, for some reason, even though part of God's principle is the fact that He loves us and will stick by us even if we mess up a hundred times. Most of these churches who diss on children for committing one sin and say "you'll go to hell for doing x and y" are being hypocritical because they themselves are flawed and know that they've committed sins in the past. Does this mean that *they* will also go to hell, even for one tiny little mistake? Come on. Wasn't the point of salvation the fact that we're all flawed, but God is willing to give us a chance? I dunno where this "holier than thou" perfectionist attitude came from but good lord. It's infuriating to watch.
45:47 honestly, i wasn't expecting a real scream at all, so it actually made me kind of emotional when she went through with it. it's not incredible but it definitely worked, at least to me. she did pretty good with that scene all things considered
I do have to say, with the Kid-Arron Burr in the "Play" Seems to be having the most noticeable sign of stage fright! Crying is quite normal if you have stage fright, so hearing him on the brink of crying is an obvious sign. Poor kid, I feel so bad for all of them, and being that they were slandered instead of the people who directed this, was so disappointing.
I would have been almost okay with it if all they did was cut out the cursing (I get, you can't curse in church), but changing the whole message of the play and adding completely fabricated lines, and even adding a whole scene, just seems like a smack on the face to the man who spent years of his life creating this. How would this pastor feel if someone took his sermons that he worked probably days on, and changed the message, but pretty much had the same thing? Its like they are bastardizing someone's art, and message. I also agree the kids shouldn't be punished for this, they go to church, and that's alright, and they get to do something fun, and most of them probably love acting, and Jesus, so it wouldn't seem like anything was wrong.
Agree with all of this...if Lin Manuel Miranda took one of his sermons he would probably be furious but he gets to steal and lie. And yeah, as a former church kid I know they think they're literally saving lives by converting people and this may be the only artistic outlet they get. It's no more their fault than the kids who are in bad movies we cover.
There are the themes, and Hamilton does reference going to church after Philip's death. But that subtlety and the idea of slow recovery is not enough. It has to be a neat boxes ticked born again with the sinners prayer version of faith. And I love that legacy song in the original.
My school had a policy that said if you didn’t have a signed form, you had to learn about Christianity. This was a public school and it started in year 1. My parents weren’t religious but wanted me to learn and choose for myself. The first lesson and the preacher immediately told us if we didn’t believe and repent, we’d burn in hell. It terrified me as a kid so I became a Christian. A year later something traumatic happened to me and I felt like it was god punishing me for something. It really messed me up. At 11 I stopped believing in god. As an adult, it makes me so angry when people try to push their religion onto others through fear, even more so when they do it to kids. Me and so many others are living proof that it is so damaging to people. The adults in this knew what they were doing but don’t care
I'm so sorry that happened to you. I know firsthand that it can be absolutely traumatizing to have that stuff taught to you as a kid. It definitely gets better once you're out though. I hope you're healing from that 💛
Son of a Scotsman likely was a dig! My partner is from Scotland and has talked a bit about the discrimination Scottish folx routinely face from people in the UK. Thanks for the dive into this!
That is true! Because the Scots did rebel against Great Britain and rejected English traditions so that does make historical sense. Thanks for watching!
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff yeah, as an English teen who somehow has links to Wales and Scotland (not via blood, but holiday's to Wales (Talyllyn Railway, my beloved) and a Scottish step grandpa) you do end up seeing how wack England is. Like only the English call themselves Brits and use the union jack, everyone else uses their own flags and calls themselves their own thing, which the English seem relatively oblivious too, unless we're talking about rugby or football, the drunk passions of this island. I vaguely remember a video filmed in Scotland where they ask people what country they hate, England was a common answer, especially with the older generations.
@@annoyingginger5077 oh yeah, I have family from Ireland and a bit from Scotland so I know the general opinions of the English. Like as an American I know that you can't generalize people by their government because you know...america does a lot of weird stuff but just like the US there seems to be a percentage in UK that are uneducated about some of the history between them and other countries.
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff yeah definitely, I mean I found out about a, rather recent (like 1960's), Welsh tragedy (aberfan) through a RUclips video, I had no clue about it, I knew more about Alexander Hamilton and the cold war. I probably could tell you more about Thomas and friends (the kids show) than England's relationship with Scotland and Wales, and even then the stuff I know about the UK primarily comes from horrible histories.
@@annoyingginger5077 as an American I relate to that super hard because America literally teaches history incorrectly in public schools to cover up the racism of our founding fathers and other historical figures and when I realized how little I had actually been taught I was really mad.

I truly appreciate that you're a fan of Hamilton to give a full on comparison of the rip-off version to the original, for someone like me who saw Hamilton on Disney+ once, and has only listened to certain songs from the soundtrack (for me I know "Helpless" and "You'll Be Back" the most) you truly did a phenomenal job breaking this whole thing down.
"The life you now have is because of decisions you've done in the past." That exact message is why I left religion and will never return. Christians like that man preach this to abused children, the terminally ill, people who are suffering greatly due to circumstances beyond their control. Feeling so beaten and helpless and trapped only to have someone tell you this is all your fault is devastating. If this is the message you preach, you're a monster.
The actors who played Hamilton and Eliza are actually married in real life (not minors but still very young) which is why she also plays Mariah Reynolds since they couldn't let Hamilton hold hands with someone he's not married to on stage 😂
“(Somebody I forget who) say I’ve got the same virtuosity and brains as my pops!” “The ladies say… my shot’s… just the same as my pops!” Like censorers/scriptwriters for scamilton, holy shit, what are you *on*

This was a really well made video. I grew up Christian and I can defiantly relate to having Religious Trauma. Especially one Youth Pastor I had who found out I was smoking Cigarettes' at one time (I don't do this anymore) And he gave me I believe his office number if I ever needed to talk to help get me off of them. Or if I needed religious help. Anyway I remember trying to call him and he was always busy which was fine. I would leave messages asking if he can call me back. I left my number and it did not happen. But I have a memory of other people who would go up to him when we met for youth group saying that they are happy he helped them. Glad they got to talk to him. And if I confronted him about why he did not get back to me (I was nice of course) he would just say he was busy and was sorry he did not get back to me but he would when can. This went on for a good amount of months and I was like I get the hint I am not on the top of your list or on it at all. He was a nice guy but It's like I did not figure out why he said he wanted to help but I just get shoved to the side when I tried to reach out but others (Not everyone but most people) He was willing to help but some of us just got shoved off. That's just one of the things that got me to leave the Christian religion. I know not much of a traumatic experience (There's more but the more extreme ones mainly happened where I used to live at the time) But it did make me think...This is someone who is always saying how much he is a person of the faith but makes false promises of helping people. Maybe there is something going on I did not know about but still just be up front and tell me and others why you changed your mind on us. I feel bad for the kids in this play. The adults know what they are doing (I am sure some might not but most do) These kids just trying to do what they feel is right but the adults know what's up. This play is a mess. Yes there are talented people especially the ones trying to pull off some of the harder parts of certain songs. There is obviously real work that went into it especially with a smaller budget. I just do not agree with the bigotry especially with the sermon at the end. Just ugh no just no I do not agree with anything like that. People are free to believe in what they want I just don't like the hate that comes in a lot. Religious Wars will sadly always be a thing. There will always be those that will talk badly about anyone lgbtq+ But we just gotta show those that will listen that Just because you belong to a certain said religion or whatever that other beliefs are not bad just because they are not in the same place as yours is. And I know there are some good non judgmental Religious people out there. Shout out to those people the cool ones. This review was amazing and is one of my favorites now. I can tell this was not easy for you to make but you did so good with it Avery. Keep it up.
Thank you so much Tilly...for the kind words and also for sharing your story. I can relate to the feeling of being on the outside of the community a bit when it comes to church. To be fair in my case I was a strange kid who fit in nowhere and my youth pastor did try and is a really nice dude who I have a lot of respect for to this day. My situation was more the other kids were just as cliquey as everywhere else and it didn't help my already prevalent anxiety disorder. Just because something isn't the most insane story ever doesn't mean that it wasn't traumatic or that your feelings aren't valid. I got to a point where I realized that no one seemed any happier in church than anywhere else and I just felt more miserable than ever around that crowd. And sure there's a lot more messed up stuff and things that are more specific but when I think back the first memory is just being unhappy. I just refuse to be part of any group that isn't actively opposed to all forms of bigotry and so I decided to distance myself and I honestly am glad I did. 💛
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff I can relate to not fitting in. The youth pastor sounds like a cool guy. I get the clique thing I mainly fit in but just barely with the nerds and goths. Feeling unhappy in the church. Yeah I was also unhappy there. I mean there was some good moments and the Potlucks always had some good food. But for the most part Being unhappy was a thing. I was also miserable. But hey for that reason and others I am glad you distanced yourself. You deserve to be happy 💖
I got to to watch this show on Disney Plus when it came out to the service after I moved states (originally from New Jersey). I'd only ever listened to the soundtrack and missed out on so many details from the play (the character of 'the Bullet' for example, and the part about Laurens fate at the end of Dear Theodosia) in the visual sense. And oh yes, Wait For It is my favorite song. There were parts where my quiet dignity and grace had to be tested with this but that part about Eliza's orphanage broke me. Quiet dignity and grace needed to take a commercial break...but it's back. Excellent video as always, thank you for another informative piece and I promise, I will not curse the darkness but instead turn on a light (Here meaning I'm going to rewatch the original cast recording and play the Wait For It track from the album).
I know! I had the same experience with getting to see the cast recording on Disney plus. I still cry at it's quiet uptown. 😭 And yep...I went through all the emotions with this one and needed to rant. Fair warning: the next video is about their horrible beauty and the beast because no one messes with my boi. But omg I'm excited to stop talking about this or any church for a hot second after that. This was worse than the star wars holiday special I think lol.
I once showed my friends Santa And the Ice Cream Bunny with Rifftrax. And all through this I wonder 'is this what that was like?' I did watch the movie before sharing it with others, but sometimes you just got to show someone else the thing so they can understand why you're screaming into your Cerberus squishable plush. Sometimes you just gotta scream into the void.
the king george iii in this one makes me upset with how he was apparently chewing gum during his performance and also forgot one of his lines 😭 king george is my favorite part of the musical and he did him so dirty...
They SHOULD have made it Lafayette to scold him to Jesus. They already ruined the show and changed the words, why not put in an extra little God rap? Hold on, I'm trying to channel my own religious trauma, bringing up the six years of Christian camp, summoning the vibe of the youth pastors, really trying to nail that cool-not-cool substitute teacher cringe.. Ok, ok here: "Alexander Hamilton, look where you're standing, You flew too high but you didn't like the landing. Always believed you were the smartest in the room The loudest of men with his morals out of tune. I'm sorry for your loss but because of that hubris You thought you were Moses - turns out you're Judas. I forgive you for turning your back on me, man, But don't turn away from the great I Am." Argh, ARGH, get it off me, I regret everything, I'm sorry, I'm so sorry. Oh no, I'm picturing it now, what have I done.
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff Hahaha, we are sisters in the trauma, it's fine. And we weren't allowed anything so progressive as Lacrae at my Christian Camp. We just got 'Thorns in the Straw' by Graham Kendrick on repeat. help
I've watched Hamilton on Disney plus and seen Hamilton on Broadway. It makes me angry when anybody, especially religious maniacs, ruin the message of musicals to indoctrinate vulnerable people. But I appreciate your video and analysis.
It's weird that they didnt change it more, to make the king the hero. After all, he's a tyrant who threatens to "Kill your friends and family to remind you of my love.", which sounds like God's MO in the old testament.
I feel bad for the kids. Like you said, I love the kid playing alexander and burr, also Laffayette/Jefferson too, they were a real treat in some songs. And I also felt so bad that they cut out The room where it happens, I really wanted too witness the actor playing burr sing that song
Yeah I know how hard they must have worked at the direction of adults who were irresponsible. It's just a mess but I hope they don't stop performing because of cyber bullying.
I don't watch a lot of videos over an hour long, but this one was worth it. Thank you! Also, so sweet to see your cat look up at you with such adulation at 48:03 ❤️
Thank you so much! This is the longest video I've ever posted and I was stressed that no one would watch it lol. Bless Perry... she's just this super happy emotional support pet and we all love her. 💛
16:30 I grew up Catholic and went to a Catholic school for ten years. So I was pretty much absorbed in religious content for a decade. I think what else could be said is that, with religious media, the religious message takes priority and the story is secondary. A lot of rip offs I've seen just use the infringed upon material as a story because that's not what matters, the message is what matters. I think a good example of this is a rip off of Finding Nemo called Finding Jesus. Do I think there's religious content that can have both a good message and story? Yes. Veggie Tales I think is honestly the best religious media. It comes up with original stories and also has a way to relay a religious message without being preachy. But a lot of religious media I've seen lately just rip off well known stuff. And it's frustrating. The story doesn't matter. They just want to send a message. And it doesn't matter if that message costs some artist to lose money. For the love of God, please just respect your artists out there. It's so easy for this stuff to happen and smaller artists don't have the ability to call it out for stealing.
Yep, I always think of veggie tales when trying to think of religious media that's actually good and I still like it to this day because it's funny and well made. But for every veggie tales there's a Bible Man you know?
There's this really weird obsession that Christian media seems to have with being as subtle as a sledgehammer. Like, Hamilton itself can definitely be viewed through a Christian lens. I mean one of Eliza's lines in the final number (which Scamilton quoted verbatim) is "The Lord in His kindness, He grants me what you always wanted/ He gives me more time." And "Dear Theodosia" is very sympatico with Christian values- which is why it's so weird that this church cut it entirely.
Looking for the full version of "Scamilton" I stumbled across "Illegal Hamilton" a version put on by young kids (also in a church). I was amazed that kids were able to pull it off as well as they did. They even harmonized better than Scamilton at times.
The uptown pastor thing annoys me because it was obvious that Hamilton was responsible for Philip's death. There was no need for the religious undertones.
Let me just say as deeply spiritual and religious the part that annoys me the most annoying is that these Evangelical have this money and don't use it to do something original ( or help the less fortunate). Like the Nativity for example. I feel bad for these kids and I really hope they use there faith to do actual good in this world. The adults really let them down and I too hope this Church gets sued.
I agree with all of this^^ Like I left organized religion a while ago but I still consider myself a deeply spiritual person and I just hate how churches like this will exploit young people's want to do good in the world. Grrrrr!
1:20:40 on the Washington slavery point. In the original production Washington bows his head and walks back in shame as Eliza says that line - dead Washington recognising the evils of it all (sort of lines up with the history of him leaving instructions to emancipate his enslaved people in his will). In the show the line would've also made sense if the Cabinet Battle #3 (which dealt with the Washington administration's slavery policies) made it to the final version of the show. Because of the camerawork we don't know whether this production had that minor detail, but I'd hazard a guess at no.
With the line about Eliza and slavery at the end the musical mildly goes with the fact normally having Washington bow his head and step back at that line, also I am so glad I’m not the only one who finds him just yelling hilarious
I wasn't ready for the Scamilton review video to teach me about the misconception of "taking the lords name in vain". That moment is the reason I'm subscribing.
I'm pretty sure that they left off the scene where Hamilton and Eliza find out about the death of Laurens because they pulled all the backing tracks from the official "Hamilton instrumentals" soundtrack release (the music sans voices, for, I dunno, karaoke purposes) and the music for that scene wasn't included just like in the regular soundtrack.
There is such a "blame the victim" mentality to the saying "all the problems in your life are due to your own actions." All the SA survivors did not ask to be SA and yet they still suffer for the actions of others. A POC has racial issues in their life not because of their own actions or the way they live but just because they are alive and that is enough for society to snub them. And I understand that karma is a bitch and that yes some of our problems stem from bad decisions we have made in the past (ex: commissioning an artist, not paying them and then not being able to find any one willing to draw you a commission), but so many more things are just out of our control.
It's kinda sad how the random homophobia at the end completely soured what would've been a strange and kinda sleazy but ultimately innocuous christian play.
I just hope the legal action here doesn’t end all pop culture church plays. Jenny Nicholson said she’d prefer church plays be allowed to continue and there’s something charming about them.
Yeah, I totally get that. This one is a little more insidious in my opinion because of the lying and homophobia coming directly from it. The plays from the church Jenny covered (minus all the racism) did get a laugh out of me and I would like to see what they're planning this year.
Yeah, can relate with not being with the church when you know most people there are somewhat worse than others out of it. Also, love when you picked up Perry, so adorable!
I agree with all your points about this particular version of the show. Just to clarify something about the early US political system though: each delegate actually had two votes, for two different candidates. So usually each party would run two candidates, one for president and one for vice president. Then, the delegates would all vote for the presidential candidate and either one or two wouldn’t vote for the VP candidate, or they would all vote for both and the VP would step down from the running. What happened in 1800 is that Burr was running as Jefferson’s vp, but refused to step down with the hopes that the federalist house would choose him over Jefferson. It didn’t work out.
Can you believe that Lin Manuel Miranda spent years perfecting the incredible musical that we see on screens. He poured everything in him to create what we see on screen and what we love, for these people to put this sh*tshow on
This was a great video, I really enjoyed it. I agree that this brings up so many specific religious traumas. I am glad that you brought up the blame belonging to the adults and not the kids. You can’t see clearly as a kid who has been indoctrinated since birth. Your whole life has been believing lies and having the “faith” to never question or think anything all the way through. I hope that those kids can use their talents in a better and healthier space.
Thank you! As much as this is a big meme I wanted to give my perspective as someone who has been in a similar culture because not only do I feel terrible for those kids I'm afraid that the church is using all of this hate they're getting online to further indoctrinate them.
As someone who hadn't heard of this prior to watching this video, I thoroughly appreciate the back story and everything in the beginning. Also I love Perry rebelling during the part where Hamilton is told to just look to Jesus while he's grieving lol
Not surprised they kept all the violence in bc my Evangelical church loved using violent imagery all the time but I’m definitely surprised by the harem inclusion.
Honestly yeah the 2011 bible mini series that was so popular with evangelicals had terribly violent imagery. Genuinely still laughing that they kept the word harem in there.
i'm not correcting or anything just an intresting fact. at the end it is not hamilton being portrayed it is lin manual miranda meeting eliza and learning her story and taking her to show the world that he has told her story to see their legacies lived on past death. which to me is such a gorgeous moving moment.
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff It's open to personal interpretation; ultimately, there is no actual definitive right or wrong answer. Lin-Manuel Miranda and Thomas Kail (the original director) have always been very open about the fact that they basically wanted to leave it up to everyone who plays Eliza to come up with her own reason for the gasp, and that it's also up to each person in the audience to interpret the ending how they want. Whenever Lin's been asked about the ending to the show and what it means, all he's said is that he thinks it's a moment that transcends time in some way and that he personally *doesn't* agree with the "it's Lin playing himself" interpretation (as he's pointed out that it only works with the relatively few performances that specifically had him play Alexander) but he appreciates it as a theory.
"...heard about one of our founding fathers" "Who?" "Alexander Hamilton" "Oh" I had a serious comment about the practice of churches bastardizing IP but that made me Donald Duck laugh so, thank
I loved this video! I kinda binge watch fundie snark, so it really was up my alley. 😅 But I love how respectfully you spoke about the actors and found positive things to say about them. I felt like the criticism was all very fair and not overly caustic. Thank you for your time putting this together! I hope it wasn't too mentally draining, because I know it can be a lot. I hope you do more about their other plays!
Thank you so much! I really try in general to be even keeled with these videos (though I can be very sarcastic I try to be fair lol). But this one has such a huge interest around it that I just had to talk about it. I'm going to do a video on their beauty and the beast next and then give them (and me) a break for a little while at least. Are you a huge fan of fundie Friday like I am? 😅
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff Yes! Love Fundie Fridays. Also have been watching a lot of Ex-fundie Diaries, which is less snark more personal storytelling. I didn't grow up fundamentalist, but I'm learning more and more about how those values bled over into how I was raised, how our society is structured, and the messages we all get.
@@Nikki-lodeon I'll check that channel out! I was raised in non denominational fundie churches so it's helpful to know I'm not the only one unpacking all of my religious trauma out here lol. I don't have any ill will towards my old church obviously...I'm just glad to be out.
I could be wrong but since Monticello is a botanical garden and experimental horticulture center and Hamilton uses the word "mellow" I took it to be a reference to "smoking". Also, he references Sally directly when he returns to New York and the amount of people who don't understand and think Sally is his wife is wild to me. 😳
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff (sorry for the late comment) A bit later in the song he also says "...while you were off gettin' high with the French" so I think you're right
Honestly as a person whose only "religious" beliefs are fueled by my own anxiety and intrusive thoughts, and as someone who recently lost a person I was quite close to, the concept of bad things (especially those disconnected to your actions) being because of something you did in the past is absolutely horrifying. I've been trying to fight off the guilt from the thoughts that I could've done something, should've done something, when it's not my fault that they're gone, and if someone were to tell me that it was caused by me, frankly that would only push me even further from where I already am regarding religion. That line (circa 47:20 ?) is just deeply, deeply unsettling for someone who might have ocd and tends to struggle with those irrational beliefs and keeping them from worming into my head. I know it doesn't fully apply to the situation in the plot (and it is still messed up to say what priest guy said even with hamilton's hand in what happened), but that just struck a nerve with me and I had to go ramble about it.
In real life Hamiltons last words were 'Eliza, remember you are a Christian' and it's weird that they didn't mention that. That wouldve been cringy and unnatural but unlike every other change it would've made some degree of sense
I will defend 1 change: "southern.... democratic republicans" this change still works, as Jefferson is scanning Bur in this silence. As Bur is the very obvious odd-one-out here (both for the southern part AND the democratic republican part), this helps in some way to draw attention to the fact that Bur made such a radical flip just to get into a position of power.
This channel is a diamond in the rough, a hidden gem. Keep doing what you do Avery because this content is deserving of more attention and every second is so well made. Kudos to you!
As a Christian 14 year old girl, I wanna say a couple things. 1. I am so sorry for everyone that has trauma from church! I hope you’re in a safe space, church or not. 2. I am 14, as I stated before. I do… sorta.. “struggle” with homosexuality.. more like questioning everything, trying to find an identity.. 😅 3. “Forgives” *Forgave (I was kinda, sorta annoyed by that- Ik it’s just a small grammar mistake.. 😅 4. THEY RUINED HAMILTON!!! ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS TO WATCH WAS RUINED!!!! 😭😭😭😭 5. Ik I’m “supposed” to “like” that they made it “Christian”, but I hate it!!! 6. I need to rewatch Hamilton apparently.. I have no idea what happened after Mariah seduced him, bc I just listen to the middle.. (my dad thinks I shouldn’t be watching things like that) 7. @Amethyst_Za_Cat a bud, idk if this post is serious or not but please listen to me when I say you can be a gay, bi, etc. and still be a Christian. I'd also like everyone to consider that the story of tonight and reprises are normally the scenes where Hamilton and Laurens are closest, the scenes that show their "close friendship" the most. With the homophobic comment at the end, I can't say I think it wasn't intentional
One last time doesnt implying Washington was going to die. He was just tired of serving. He wouldve lived at least 10 more years if not for getting ill and the "doctors's help"
Historically, yes but Lin Manuel Miranda has said that he had a whole song about washington actually dying but he felt like it was repetitive because they just had a song about Washington "going home" so one last time became his goodbye song in all senses.
As a Cristian myself, I hate scamilton, and I am so sorry about the experience you had with your church. It’s people like the pastors in scamilton that makes me have to say “I’m Cristian BUT..” All the hate against being gay or not believing in God is sad. I got to see a (legal) live show of Hamilton the other day, actually, and when “I know who I marrieddd” was sung that was all I could think about 💀
I always find the “struggling with homosexuality” thing so funny. Like, yeah, you got gay tips for me? I still can’t pass gay agenda 101.
Lmao 😂
Yo do you have the notes on The Trans Agenda 101? I can't seem to understand the material ;-;

The boy deserved better
I would probably cry if I was in his position
I feel bad for the kids in this show. I blame the adults. As someone who used to be a Catholic I still remember that lying is one of the 10 commandments. This church said they had permission from the Hamilton team to do this but nope they LIED which is hypocritical
Yup... because these kids are trying to do what they think is right. The adults straight up lied.
You can tell that the Burr was terrified every time he was on stage with the Washington
@@jessicahymow1410 yeah, I genuinely feel bad for these kids. They're just trying to make their families proud and do what they're told.
And illegal...

Oof I didn't even know that and now that I do I hate that part even more. 😡
Good Lord I didn't know all that!
Aww bless. XC I hope everybody's doing OK nowadays too.
I almost threw my coffee mug at my TV the first time I saw it. 😡
Yeah 😅 she really went for it, though
the way i broke down laughing at Washington saying "she tells my story" from a distance
I couldn't stop giggling. 😅
that made me wheeze- it was vine material if it was different words
forget "My hope is in Jesus" this is the funniest thing from this show, I couldn't stop laughing
I can’t stop thinking about this
As someone who was in an illegal production of a show as a kid, I imagine most of these kids didn't realize that this type of production is illegal. (I.e. licensing is not out for Hamilton, nor are directors allowed to make such cuts to a show regardless.) I imagine they were all super excited to do this show, especially when the adults around them said the Hamilton team gave them such special permission to do so.
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff Yes. Or that God won't forgive us if we don't forgive them.
I think one of the greatest bastardizations of the script was changing Eliza's line from "...I know who I married..." to "...my hope is in Jesus..."
I know 😂 it's so out of blue. Like Eliza this is a Wendy's that I just got fired from....
I feel a bit bad for these kids too, I have absolutely humiliated myself on stage more than once and I couldn't imagine it being spread around. 😅
I know, it's a big meme but the big sister in me is like, "I hope those kids are ok."
Gosh this! I've been in every stage play production of my school as a kid and I am SO happy that smartphones and yt didn't exist back then (and my dad wasn't tech savy either, so we didn't even have a videocamera). Dodged a bullet!!!
@@adrianaheiler9794 these poor kids...I would never forgive my parents if they live streamed this to the world. 😭
On the other hand, how dare the high ups in the church both steal intellectual property and then lied about stealing it, then proceeded to make the show about following Christian values when they just ignored two of the 10 commandments
One last thing, my blood BOILED at the pastor saying people struggle with homosexuality. Tbh, I hope they get sued and the money goes towards helping the LGBTQ+ community
Sorry for my rant
Oh I agree with all of this, you are super on point. I've been ranting about this all week and made the video in hopes that saying my peace may help me and maybe others with the ensuing religious trauma this stuff stirs up. My jaw dropped seeing the head pastor lie openly from the pulpit and the likening of being gay with alcoholism....oooof 😡😡😡 Like even the Christians I know are pissed about this. Thank you for sharing your perspective...I hope you're surrounded by better people these days who support you. 💛
@Justin yeah, it's hard but it definitely gets easier. Thank you for sharing. 💛
Hey, it's been quite a long time since you wrote this comment but I just came from another video about "Illegal Hamilton" and Lin Manuel-Miranda said he would sue them and that the money would go to something related to LGBTQ+, I don't remember what, I don't know how the suing process went though.

Oh the horror...don't give them any ideas or Kidz bop will try lol

"The ladies say my shot! is just the same as my pops" is quite possibly the best Kidzbop-ified line because of the sheer confusion it causes and because of how the actual line was not bad at all. Like, Anthony Ramos makes it a bit spicy because of his little dance move but you don't have to do that, mentioning attractiveness is no different than Helpless or Satisfied lol
Right?? Like maybe I've been on the internet way too long but I swear the revised line sounds more suggestive than the original and just makes me thoroughly uncomfortable.
Also- the words “my shot is the same as my pops” could definitely be taken another way-
I feel so bad for the kids but I hope the adults get hit with a lawsuit
The Hamilton team made a statement that they were pursuing legal action and withing the week the church settled out of court for an undisclosed amount.
My favorite thing is the post Phillip death bible scene is it is the perfect example of what you were talking about with the God and King George parallels. Specifically with the Kill your friends and family. That is literally what they said God did to Hamilton once you add that monologe.
Yup...the irony is staring them down but they just can't see it. 🤦♀️
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff Yes, O really agree, It is so easy not to say something But they just have to be explicit with their homophobia...
I do feel bad for the kids bc as someone who does music in school, absolutely NO music kids would pass up doing Hamilton

Right?? I'll never not have questions about this. 😭

Bless you for including animatics from Szin. They were my introduction to the play and I watch them all the time. Even if they're incomplete, I feel like they portray emotions and intentions more than a play at face value because they don't have to play to audience.
Yes! I love the animatic community in general for this reason and Szin is so talented. 🙂
Szin, I haven't heard that name in a long time.
I feel like I should let you know... that's my church.
I mean, I went to the one in San Antonio, but the guy who said he got in touch with a representative to get a license? I know him... well. He's nuts. His name is Pastor Roman Gutierrez. He has apparently died twice. Good stuff.
Also I have the Hamilton and Greatest Showman on my channel for anyone interested.
1) the whole point they want to make is that Hamilton needs God so even if I agreed with what they did I'd wonder if dwelling on his "sins" wouldn't serve a narrative purpose and
2) there are other things kept in that are even more suggestive than what was cut so I have overall questions on what kind of criteria outlined those decisions overall.
Honestly yeah...she committed and that's half the battle so good for her.
I know, like on one hand it's fair to find the play and situation very funny but we've gotta be nicer especially when younger people are involved.
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff Also, in my opinion, they did pretty well for the songs, it was just that I don't think they had the correct vocal range. :(
@@Ash.James.Aulner yeah the best singer in the world has to stay within their range and a lot of them you can tell are way out of theirs.
this is so close to being a regular play version of hamilton that i got lulled in and then the Jesus lines hit me like a left hook to the face lmao
Right?? It's so jarring and I knew it was coming
I love that the captions at 1:01:45 corrected story to furry so Eliza says “…as long as I’m alive I’ll tell this furry Jesus gives me the strength”
Pffffft...😂 I need to go through and manually fix the captions but we haven't gotten to it yet leading to these hilarious moments lol.
Jesus's fursona is a lion named Aslan.
As anyone who's read Narnia knows.
47:15 I would love if laffeyette just appeared out of nowhere and started talking or rapping about god to Hamilton
Right??

I've watched Hamilton on Disney plus and seen Hamilton on Broadway. It makes me angry when anybody, especially religious maniacs, ruin the message of musicals to indoctrinate vulnerable people.
But I appreciate your video and analysis.
Thank you for watching! I'm right there with you.
"Everything is legal in Jersey"
"Shout out to anyone in New Jersey"
Hah. Help its a hell hole here.
I'm terribly sorry. If it helps at all I'm from Georgia and we're not exactly a model state either. 💀
Laughs in Floridian..... someone get me out of here!!!!!
It's weird that they didnt change it more, to make the king the hero.
After all, he's a tyrant who threatens to "Kill your friends and family to remind you of my love.", which sounds like God's MO in the old testament.
Lol, right??
It's all about the content. You brought us a very engaging topic that needed to get out there. So naturally, we tuned in.
Just when I thought I couldn't despise organized religion any more. . .
for real 🙄
I've never seen Hamilton, so this was interesting. Glad that you went down this rabbit hole and shared your findings!
I highly recommend watching the real version if you get a chance as it's actually beautiful when it's done correctly. Thanks for watching!
Yeah it's not the kid's fault and a lot of them seem to have genuine talent so I hope this whole experience doesn't make them quit performing.
There's two?
Grrrrr!
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff I know right, its so frustrating. I have nothing to say other than, folks, don't be a bigots.
@@shelbymckinney8888 it's just so easy not to be a bigot and yet some people just don't get it.
Because of the camerawork we don't know whether this production had that minor detail, but I'd hazard a guess at no.
if my theater teacher caught us chewing gum or eating on stage we would have been in so much trouble
i loved theater so many good memories
My boyfriend is a massive Hamilton fan, and we decided to go through Scamilton recently. It's exactly painful to watch so far
Painful is a perfect word for it.
With the line about Eliza and slavery at the end the musical mildly goes with the fact normally having Washington bow his head and step back at that line, also I am so glad I’m not the only one who finds him just yelling hilarious
"SHE TELLS MY STORY!!" will always make me laugh. 😅
He sounds like he’s in the bathroom.
Eliza: I raise funds in DC for the Washington monument!
Washington in the distance: *She tells my storyyyyy!*
I wasn't ready for the Scamilton review video to teach me about the misconception of "taking the lords name in vain". That moment is the reason I'm subscribing.
Thank you! Welcome to the community!
Honestly I think you're right!
Agreed...it really does put things into a very insidious light when you remember that there are real people with real issues in the audience watching.
I'm only realizing now that the pastor that came out at the end looks like JackManifold and I'm laughing my ass off.
I absolutely love your username. 😁
It's kinda sad how the random homophobia at the end completely soured what would've been a strange and kinda sleazy but ultimately innocuous christian play.
I know, it's all fun and games until it gets homophobic....
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff from what I’ve heard some synagogues have similar traditions around Purim.
Yeah, can relate with not being with the church when you know most people there are somewhat worse than others out of it. Also, love when you picked up Perry, so adorable!
Yep, it's tough to be there I totally get it. Perry knows when I'm stressed I think she was like, "GIRL THEY DIDN'T" 😅
Ah, thank you for the clarification!
I don’t think the Hamilton team gave them the permission for the Sunday showing. I believe the pastor and other adults lied.
They definitely lied...very awkward. 😳
Can you believe that Lin Manuel Miranda spent years perfecting the incredible musical that we see on screens. He poured everything in him to create what we see on screen and what we love, for these people to put this sh*tshow on
Ikr, so disrespectful...
im so happy i found ur channel bc it's scratching an itch that i cannot explain
im a lil late to the party but u rock B)
Thanks so much! Welcome to the channel. 🙂
i usually get bored really easily with long video essays, but for some reason this one was so captivating.
Thank you!!
Thank you for watching this 😊
Perry is a huge mood. 😂
It’s interesting that I found this video right after talking to my therapist about my own religious trauma and journey
Welcome here! I'm right there with you and might I say... fantastic pfp. 😊
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff thank you!
Duels were a thing surprisingly late in history. Not sure about USA, but imperial Russia had tons of duels in early 20th century.
Yeah I'm not sure when they actually stopped in the US. Having one of our founding fathers killed in one may have caused it to end earlier here.
At least when I went to church as a kid we did actual Christian plays and didn't bastardize existing properties.
That's respectable. My parents have a friend that played Jesus and fell off the cross at the Easter play. 😅
i'm not correcting or anything just an intresting fact. at the end it is not hamilton being portrayed it is lin manual miranda meeting eliza and learning her story and taking her to show the world that he has told her story to see their legacies lived on past death. which to me is such a gorgeous moving moment.
oh! I always thought that was her seeing hamilton in the afterlife :,)
"...heard about one of our founding fathers"
"Who?"
"Alexander Hamilton"
"Oh"
I had a serious comment about the practice of churches bastardizing IP but that made me Donald Duck laugh so, thank
Thank you 😅 I do my best.
Funny thing, the church left the French F word in Lafayette's introduction, i know it translates to go away, but it can be taken as go the F away
Oh interesting, I always thought the Monticello line was a reference to Sally Hemmings.
I doubt that they did much digging into the actual figures from the play since with that time they could have written their own play.
I will defend 1 change:
"southern.... democratic republicans"
this change still works, as Jefferson is scanning Bur in this silence.
Thank you so much! I needed to hear that today. 💛

3. “Forgives” *Forgave (I was kinda, sorta annoyed by that- Ik it’s just a small grammar mistake.. 😅
4. THEY RUINED HAMILTON!!! ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS TO WATCH WAS RUINED!!!! 😭😭😭😭
5. Ik I’m “supposed” to “like” that they made it “Christian”, but I hate it!!!
6. I need to rewatch Hamilton apparently.. I have no idea what happened after Mariah seduced him, bc I just listen to the middle.. (my dad thinks I shouldn’t be watching things like that)
7. Sorry for making you read all this!! I love and accept you all!!!
(Unfortunately can’t support, due to religion)
-Amethyst (a Christian Therian)
@Amethyst_Za_Cat a bud, idk if this post is serious or not but please listen to me when I say you can be a gay, bi, etc. and still be a Christian. You define your own spiritual life, not some bitter person on a pulpit with a Bible in his hand. There's nothing wrong with you and it is good to love and accept everyone. Good luck
@@MrThebeast115 thx. This post was 100% serious mostly. I’m figuring out my identity slowly, so far I’ve figured out, the label; Gxrl fits how I feel along with she/they pronouns.
I’m thinking I could be Omni bc I like not just men, and have had a crush on a girl along with find nonbinary people, men, etc attractive.
I ran out of ideas for this comment X3
I'd also like everyone to consider that the story of tonight and reprises are normally the scenes where Hamilton and Laurens are closest, the scenes that show their "close friendship" the most. With the homophobic comment at the end, I can't say I think it wasn't intentional
That's a good point, I hadn't thought about that but I think you may be right.
Oh gosh I thought it was just cause they were getting drunk-
One last time doesnt implying Washington was going to die.
“I would never root for Disney in a lawsuit,” you say before they started fighting Ron DeSantis
Curse you Disney! Such a corrupt company that I have to root for because Ron sucks so much.
i love how organized the stickers on your laptop are oml!
Thanks! A couple of them have had to be replaced so they're slightly less organized these days but I try my best.
As a Cristian myself, I hate scamilton, and I am so sorry about the experience you had with your church. It’s people like the pastors in scamilton that makes me have to say “I’m Cristian BUT..” All the hate against being gay or not believing in God is sad. Like, people get do what they want and it’s none of your business. I just don’t understand why people would go out of their way to judge others.
Thanks for commenting. I see and recognize the religious people like you who aren't bad people 💛
