  • Male Cirl Bunting singing on the Kaikoura Peninsular, New Zealand. A few Cirl Buntings were introduced to New Zealand about 150 years ago. They have always been the rarest of the European introductions and have a patchy distribution in New Zealand. The Kaikoura Peninsular has been known as a regular haunt for many years (I recorded a flock of 16 in August 2005, in the Southern Hemisphere winter). Nowadays they do not seem to be quite as plentiful, perhaps due to a lack of grazing animals in their former territories.
