Australian here: if i see any spider remotely looking like a red back spider, wont go anywhere near it. Sorry, not worth the risk even in another country. The worst part about redbacks is that although chances of finding them in a city is pretty slim they do prefer to make their nests under chairs, bycicle seats on gates etc. At least their webs are pretty identifiable once you know what youre looking for.
Important information: Black windows actually do commonly have variations of their hourglass marking, as it sometimes looks like small triangles. It's even common for black windows to have NO marking at all! Make sure you can identify one based on the shape of its body because not all of them necessarily have a red hourglass marking!! But IMO they look incredibly different from most spiders and it's hard to get them confused for any common house spider. Especially if redbacks aren't native to you. Edit: also all spiders will eat their mates after mating. Not really sure why black widows in particular became infamous for it. 🤔
Yes! But also while all spiders do occasionally eat the male after a mate, they don't make a habit of it. The reason these feisty ladies got the name is simply because, while being researched in captivity with limited available food sources, they did it more often than not! It's not really a mate specific thing either. Already gravid spiders will eat other males who approach without mating. It's mostly about food, which is totally relatable 😂
