You should really consider wearing proper PPE when handling resin. It’s dangerous stuff.
It is my understanding that freeze-drying organic specimens prior to encapsulation is key in their preservation.

I did this with my grandmother, and can truly say it's a beautiful piece to have around. ❤️

Did she get a place of honor in the corner?

You mean... Her ashes? Cuz yo you're giving me an idea: make a wax statue of a deceased cremated pet, make a mold using latex, melt the wax out, mix ashes up in resin, cast statue made with ashes of beloved departed pet. It could be a service!
I think what Flaming Panda meant was they did put SOMETHING in resin TOGETHER, not her grandma. Lmao
I was very surprised to see that it looked unchanged after 4 weeks, despite you not preserving the fish in any way before casting! It may be attributed to your use of the pressure pot, and the small, thin size of the fish, so I’m still not sure that anyone in a different situation should use this as a guide.
Hmmmm I was going to try this with my best friend but maybe you’re right

Ive got the ashes of my precious Ursa in a dark wood box urn on my desk. Actually started really feeling down about her earlier and cried a bit, heck am crying now. No matter how big or small a pet is a family member and losing one hurts every time. Someone said it doesn't matter how short their time was with you, ti them it was their entire life.
I completely agree, internet stranger. No matter how big or small, no matter how long they were on your lives, they're your family and your their family 🌹💖 I'm sure you gave her all the absolute best love and now she's at peace
As somebody who has had and lost many beloved pets in my life I've come to realize when a pet dies they take a piece of your heart with them which hurts a lot but which also leaves a storage for another animal that needs the love and devotion that they had. A new pet will never fool that hole, the seams and cracks never disappear from the previous pet but the hole in your heart becomes less empty. We on average will outlive the majority of our beloved pets but the joy, happiness and love we receive no matter how short the time together is worth the pain.
Absolutely agreed. I still miss my fighting fish betta named Rainer and that was several years ago. I dont keep fish anymore but they are so precious..
I’m always curious about people with fish as pets… do they eat fish or ?
@@seitanbeatsyourmeat666 Usually yes, but pet animals are different from wild animals.
Most species of pet fish are not eaten and the individuals are not eaten, unless in places without much food or during wartime annd other extreme emergencies.
Although, animal free diets are increasing, they still aren't the majority.
Wow mate, firstly, sorry for your loss. And that’s an awesome way to honour a pet. I think taxidermy is weird af but this works great.
Thanks Andy
@@jiddy30 Because it's a fish. And the process doesn't involve gutting or mummifying.
@@jiddy30 ummmm taxidermy is 100% different than what Ben has done……complete not the same thing.
Most people don't get taxidermy of pets tbh, it's pretty solid to make it look the same after you take out the bone structure
Its obvious this is so different from taxidermy. Both are dead on display. 🤦♂️🤷♂️ wait.... we proved things still rot in resin. Oh maybe taxidermy leaves rotting corpses on your wall. Oh wait no they dont rot like that.🤦♂️
You came up on my suggested videos. Am so sorry for your loss. One thing we all know as animal keepers is the inevitable sorrow of outliving them. What a beautiful crafted memorial for Angel.
You were very tender and so gentle with his little fish form.
He clearly meant alot to you.
Always lovely to see such heartfelt compassion for our little companions
You might want to keep the fish in the fridge while waiting for resin to set. Freezer will freeze the body, the cool fridge will slow down decay. If there's something I learned working in a petshop over 10 years is fish decay fast.
I had a fish die recently. Thing started to bloat within 30 minutes. Went to bed and she was alive. Heard my black winged tetras clicking at the top of the water. Check and my sword tail literally has no face/head and is floating at the top. She was alive 30 minutes ago at that time and already started to bloat and be eaten. It fucking crazy/traumatizing sometimes to be a fish owner.
@@cansarinducin5338 yeah i had a cardinal tetra die on me recently and the thing wasn’t even dead before it was being ripped to shreds by the Colombian tetras, I scooped it out into the net as fast as possible and let it die semi peacefully (it had no internal organs at this point and most of its tail was missing but it was still breathing)
@@cansarinducin5338 though that isnt actually bloat from decay. when fish die, their air bladder is just no longer being controlled and so it causes them to float, if the air bladder is ruptured, the fish will then sink back down. as for being eaten, fish have amazing senses of smell, they are magnificent at detecting even the slightest chemicals associated with death.
Also the freezer will cool down the speciment and prevent it from cooking due to the resin's chemical reaction.
It s a fish. Eat it😂💁🏼♀️

@Carved Haunts rats are basically tiny puppies. No, I'm not kidding. They're super smart and incredibly loving with their people.
@Calico M my boys passed close together as well (years ago) , I don't know if it made it harder for me, or easier. My condolences. Just remember, you may not get to have them for your whole life, but they got to have you for theirs, and I'm sure they loved every minute with you.
I actually made a condolences card for one of my Mom's coworkers, but now I think I was making it for you. The message inside was as follows: "When the seas of life start to get rough, just know that we're here to lift you up❤❤❤" I hope things get better my friend, Rip Angel
You're such a good soul bud. I actually cried when my Beta Fish died like a year ago. I couldn't help it, idk if it was due to all the loss I've had to go through in the last few years and my family being murdered. But I got excited to feed him everyday and how he'd follow me from one side to the next. It's always sad to lose anything that meant something to you. Cheers bro. Well done on preserving your little friend
This is really sweet. People often don't care about fish and this is an act of love.
If I might make a suggestion, though there's nothing to do about it now, if you do it again you might want to create false eyes. The scales may be held in place by the resin but the eye will definitely not be and in the update you can see that his eyes have degraded. There is still moisture inside the fish's body that cannot escape, and the gut bacteria and whatever microbes were in and on the fish remain there. Decay is inevitable but will be slowed down. It may take years to skeletonize but it probably will. For more permanent preservation of an animal the best options are mummification and taxidermy. Neither of these options are pleasant to perform yourself on an animal you love but are things you can do, and combined with resin the preserved body could be protected for centuries.
Thankyou, yeah that’s a good idea
Source "dude trust me"
I think it's very unlikely it will ever skeletonize. The bacteria will not live very long because there is no oxygen left. Additionally, the epoxy will never let go of the scales and flesh. A six month update should tell the tale. If it hasn't degraded much from where it is now, it will most likely look like it for centuries. In fact, I can pretty much guarantee it, because I have seen dozens of tarantulas, rattlesnake heads, and various other life forms over the years, scorpions etc, and some have been 40-50 years old. Nah, I think it will look pretty much the same as it does now, for many, many years to come...
@@Quickened1 There are many microbes that require no oxygen to live. You might remember just how foul the egg in resin was after a year. Proteins will break down with time.
If you're not very squeamish take a close look at the eyes before and after and you'll see there's already a void in the resin where they once were. That's why I suggested false eyes and it's why you never see a human funerary service with the deceased having open eyes. They go cloudy very soon after death and stop looking like the person's living eyes.
Insects are wonderful creatures and preserving them in resin does work better! They have hard exoskeletons which are more resilient than flesh. It's the same reason that bones stick around for a long time. The insects too decay in resin but it's mostly inside the exoskeleton so you don't see it. A severed head of a creature will also preserve better simply because there will be less fluid in it due to, well you know.
I'm an engineer and if there's one thing you learn about building stuff it's that nothing keeps the same properties indefinitely. We can simulate and create ageing chambers but we really don't know how modern synthetics will hold up over time. We know that all resins will yellow with UV exposure and we know that plastics break apart much faster than they break down. It's possible that some of the hundreds of resins we have will just crumble away in a couple hundred years. It's not like every formula gets that rigorous wear testing (that I wish my job was because it's more fun than appliances).
@@SAOS451316 it's true, anaerobic bacteria (could) develope during decomposition, but not guaranteed. Even if they do, being sealed within epoxy will limit the extent of their effectiveness.
The eyes obviously go first, and yes, I agree fake eyes would be most desirable. I've seen other animals as well, but you are right, eventually, the epoxy will decay, however I would wager, not before any of us are long gone, except if it were left perpetually in direct sunlight. I have seen encasements of flowers that decayed because they were left in windowsills and the resin turned brown and crumbled.
Nothing lasts forever, but depending on how these resins are stored, they could potentially last for hundreds of years, maybe eons if kept in darkness. As I said before, I highly doubt this fish will skeletonize, based simply on the numerous things I've seen encased in resin in the past. Suffice it to say, only time will tell...
Little Angel 🥺 So sorry for your loss, what you done was beautiful, I really hope baby Angel lasts in his resting place, so gentle with his delicate body.

I use to work at this big aquarium store and we had all kinds of fish of all sizes dying all the time. I always wished I could save them in resin somehow when we happened to have an especially magnificent fish pass away.
im sure they they dont cast the fish in resin in case people find it cruel despite the fish passing away
could be bad for aquarium business
Imagine making tables with fish in the epoxy !! That’d be awesome !!
You could just do small clear molds just big enough to encase them and when you get enough make the table

Unfortunately, its unlikely. Most people tend to forget that decay also occurs due to enzymes and acids inside the body.
I'd say possibly freeze drying could prevent the break down of tissue.

BTW, I set a lot of scorpions in resin this same way. I’ve made single action pistol grips from them and even some bolo ties. But your method here is sound and hopefully he’ll look great for years to come!

Just curious but when you soak the scorpion in alcohol will it effect it with its fluorescent shell? I have a scorpion preserved too that I want to put in resin soon so I’m curious if the alcohol will effect it also can you reposition them by soaking them in soapy water and letting them dry out?
@@MrForeverAlone no, the alcohol will not effect their ability to glow under black light. I catch mine alive and then put them in alcohol. Months later they’re still soft so I can position them and pin them out to dry in the shape that I want.

The first time I saw a fish preserved in resin must have been almost 30 years ago. It was a piranha! I was always mesmerized by it when I visited the home it resided in. Its teeth are no joke.
this was so interesting!
question though, wouldn't it be better to let the fish dry out, so it would decompose less, plus be easier to place correctly?
Thankyou, I’m not sure
When fish dry out they become much less... Fish shaped... I think you'd have to replace the water with something (possibly resin) but I'm not sure how.
Excluding oxygen will sure slow decomposition but there's possibly enough in there that it will still eventually happen.
Absolutely fascinating stuff though, and such care taken of Angel 💜

Interesting, since I was little whenever our fish die we have a rock out front by the driveway we bury them under. If future archeologists find it I wonder what they’ll think.
Not all bones get fossilize
My mom had an aquarium with different species fish in it and the angel fish were always the casualties. I think they like a more alkaline water chemistry. They're not easy to keep happy and healthy in aquariums with different kinds of fish. Angel fish are such nice fish and so serene in home aquariums.
Excellent piece of work and still looks perfect!
