  • Every year before heading out to our annual Unimog Owner's Weekend, we ask the question "what do you want to see at the event". We don't know if it's just because everyone wants to see Dan sweat and do some work, but the most common answer is always "a tyre change". So, we've done it again and this time were smart enough to film the whole thing so that Dan's back can have a rest next year. We hope that these tips and tricks are helpful if you ever find yourself needing to change your Unimog's tyre (or any truck for that matter).

    I reckon it would be a good idea to make sure that the parking brake is on, it’s in gear and in 4WD mode with locked diffs. That way there’s less chance of the truck moving whilst you’re working on it.

    Thankyou for the demo. It is also a good idea to check the wheel nuts again after about 50 Ks as the rim settles back in you can find that some of the nuts will have come loose. Personal experience.

      Yes, great point! After all servicing etc. we put a reminder on our customers dashboard to do this.

    A close up picture or view of where the jack was placed on the axle would be helpful; presumably this is best near to the spring mounting to reduce the lifting force needed and minimize risk of damage to the axle casing. Unicat has a helpful video I think on dismantling the Hutchinson rims.

    I also carry 3 of the original nuts to centralise the wheel because the new nuts aren't bevelled.

    Rattlegun is a good idea .. just, why battery powered electric one, when you have an air lines cross the whole truck, so why not air-powered rattlegun?
    Yes, you'll need some air hoses, but unless you do have CTIF you should have at least one airhose to inflate/deflate your tires. And with CTIF you might be able to simply use that connection point right on tire with some short airhose.

      Unfortunately the air tanks and air system on the truck are not sufficient to run an air-operated rattle gun so you would get a few good seconds of us and then the tank would need to refill with air. Unless of course you had a PTO or hydraulic driven compressor for this which would be a very expensive way to tighten wheel nuts.

      @@unidanengineering Thanks, I guess you are the experts here and so you tried and failed onboard air powered rattle gun. Good point. Thanks for insight!

    Don't unimogs have air compressors? I'd just have a pneumatic jack and impact gun

    I carry my 18v rattle gun and a torque wrench. I would probably die undoing all the nuts by hand. 🤣

    Which way do you rotate the tyres? Do you include the spare?

      @michaelguerin56 2 года назад +3

      The fun part of rotating Unimog tyres, if you have the factory standard Michelin directional tyres, is that:
      you have to take some of those tyres off the rims, turn them over and put them back on. It is a job best done with the appropriate workshop tool, as seen in your local tyre shop. 🙂 We did it at the main camp motor pool. Those non-directional tyres will make life a great deal easier.
