- SBS's Craig Foster gives his thoughts on Brazil's humiliating 7-1 loss to Germany in the 2014 World Cup Semi Final. Craig stresses that Brazilian football needs a change of direction, more along the lines of going back to its roots of Joga Bonito, and also adapting to football of the 21st Century

Sorry to say but what happen to brazil was a big Karma..the game with Colombia,that was really a shameful way to win the game and they all celebrate it like "ok we win" the injustices and the stupidity of the referee not seeing what the brazil players been doing to Rodriquez, u know what I mean if u watched the game..
And he said it in the video. Brazil accepted the way this team played, they accepted it and were content with it being that way just to win and that, is the problem.

Finally a properish review of that horrible game. You know it has been a year but as a staunch Brazil supporter, it still haunts me to this day. I kind of knew that Brazil will be humiliated when I looked at that squad. Here's how I think Brazil truly messed up: 1) Luiz Phil Schlari's selection for 2014 world cup was truly awe full to say the least. You choose guys like Fred, Jo, Dante etc and you don't choose Miranda, Filipe Luis, Philipe Coutinho, Roberto Firminho and Diego Alvez ? I mean you are preferring a third choice goal keeper over a world class goal keeper? 2) Phil Scholari's squad selection for the semi final was even more messed up. Germans are very dominating in the midfield and always like that possession game, so if you don't have a world class squad, you have to play a defensive game with your midfield stacked up.
A (4 - 2 - 3 - 1) was not a good formation for that game. They shouldve played 4 - 3 - 3 with this squad:

Marcelo Dante David Luiz (C) Maicon
Julio Cesar
This Squad is based on the selection scholari made for this World Cup. Even though I dont agree with his choice of selections for the world cup, but If he made the right selections for this match, it could've been a better one. In this squad there are 3 defensive midfielders that allow David Luiz to move forward without any worry because luiz gustavo usually moves back to support defence. Marcello wouldve been supported by Ramires that wouldve allowed marcelo to move forward freely. Willian is another hard worker that came on at the 70th minute mark but it was too late .. he wouldve supported maicon that wouldve allowed maicon to move forward. Oscar SHOULDVE been started on neymars position because thats the place he couldve made a difference in. And hulk is there for fred because hulk wouldve made a million times more difference. Goal keeper stays the same. If scholari carefully assessed his options, the game against germany wouldve been less embarasing and Brazil couldve actually given the germans a stern test. Finally, This was how the brazil squad shoudve been in the 2014 world cup:

I could Almost Guarantee you that brazil wouldve won with this squad with the right luck, and ofcourse neymar and thiago silva being included in squad. Blaming the result on the outtage of neymar and thiago silva is utterly BS because you have to be ready no matter what. When your main player/s go out, you make appropriate changes to squad and make appropriate tactical changes to cope with the loss of the main player/s.
I hope Brazil win Copa America this year in order to Restore their pride. Even if they don't win, I firmly believe in Dunga to get most OUT of the Brazilian squad. You will not see this sort of than embarrassing result with Dunga.

I feel like Brazil stopped playing their "jogo bonito" since their preparation to the 2010 World Cup.
Their coach at that time, Dunga, didn't allow Ronaldinho (in his prime) to play that style and made the team like an European team. Not once did the team looked like that playful but efficient style that characterized the Brazil of the past. Now Brazil just plays with strategy, which is still important, but with little "wow" moments.
nah man ronaldinho was in steady decline since 2006. He should've been taken to south africa, but he was past his prime at that point.

They scored some great goals. Yes, they underperformed in the final, but they were the best team of that tournament.
Second that. They were an extremely disciplined team that could turn it on when it really mattered and they were worthy, worthy winners. I'll never forget the quarter-final against Holland - game of the turnament. and that was the perdominantly Ajax Amsterdam Netherlands - that were Champions League winners in 1995 - so THAT's who the 1994 team really defeated.
That said - I'm a huge Germany fan since childhood.
i dont like the 94 team, italy played at 40°C, with 25°C we were able to destroy them, they had romario, bebeto and 2 fantastic wings ? we had baggio, signori, zola, the greatest defence of all times, pagliuca a great goolkeeper, albertini a intelligent regist/playmaker, and the best coach of the era.

When Brazilian players played in Brazil they loved playing for Brazil then they all got rich playing for Europe clubs and now don't actually give a shit
