If you guys want the quick history for the band: The singer (Suzuhana Yuko), flutist (Kaminaga Daisuke), and koto player (Ibukuro Kiyoshi) were already friends with their own band focusing on more traditional music. Yuko wanted to do something special and fuse traditional with rock/metal.
Everyone involved (except maybe Shamisen player Ninagawa Beni) are session musicians who did a lot of work recording vocaloid music, and Yuko scouted the other musicians through those professional contacts. They found Wadaiko (traditional japanese drums) player Kurona, Machiya was a renown guitarist known for incredible shredding skills, and Wasabi had a reputation of super energetic drumming. At their initial conception, they had a different bassist and shamisen player. Asa, who had produced vocaloid music, discovered them and joined as their bassist. And they finally got Beni while doing shows in Shibuya, Tokyo, when Beni saw their show and approached them to join.
If you want to see a super early video they did, featuring their old bassist and shamisen player, check out Tsuki Kage Mai Ka.

I think I read somewhere that Beni was a national champion or grandmaster on the instrument and as you said basically walked up to them after a gig and was like look what I can do and joined the band. She has a few short videos of herself playing. She hasn't loaded any in a long long time as far as I remember.

  • @Brand-yk6dw

the instrument your asking about is called a shamisen and the "scraper looking thing for drywall" is called a bachi. I was taught by my neighbor's grandmother how to use one and its a very unorthodox way of using a guitar so you'll have to relearn due to the sheer size of the bachi. its also 9x more delicate than a regular guitar and can be ruined by body oils and miss-picking into the sheet fabric body. all shamisen are made by hand and consist of wood specialized dampened and treated animal skin layered with and treated sheet cloth front and back of the wood body (traditional per regions of Japan) to hold the cloth and wooden frame together (as far as I'm aware there are no screws as is common with most building/creating/ construction in traditional items, structures, and buildings in japan it mainly consists of join locks sawed into the wood; pretty much all wood craftsmen in japan must know this if undergoing apprenticeship so there's a side fact). the guitar is fretless and strings are of only seen as 3 string (first and the thinnest string is nylon, the second string is some weird amalgamation called Petron the thickest is made from silk) the bachi is a pick originated from mainly uses of off-cuts of wood carved and then plated in resinlike plastic or other animal parts like bone, horns, and tusks ivory. a shamisen is akin to a banjo but sounds and resonates like an Indian Sitar. to emphasise how delicate a shamisen is; the simple touches of the body and neck alone a few times over can mess the color of the stain up so it is required that a cloth pad and a cloth rest situated on the fingers like a micro hammock for sliding up and down the neck dont braise the delicate stain of the wood. prices of a shamisen in modern time are easily starting in the 2 to 3k range and up and thats not even accounting for a bachi pick which is about 1k minimum and up (did i mention a bachi replaced every 1 to 2 years if you use it often but mainly depending on usage and the shamisen has to be sent out to have their items tuned and/or refitted cause remember its basically all wood and string so it has to be replaced to retain its cloth front and back eventually, about 2 to 4 years before that needs to be maintained but a farily good player does it yearly and for good reason considering the price) .

The masks are from Noh theatre. They made so that depending on the angle you see them they subtly show different expressions. The mask maker will often sit with the wood for the mask for days before carving them. Really spiritual stuff.

Wagakki Band is one of the best Japanese groups out there. They combine traditional instruments and vocal styles with modern rock, metal, jazz, and more. All eight members are master level musicians, and their lead singer, the very elegant Yuko Suzuhana, may be the best female Japanese vocalist I have heard. Wagakki Band is the only other Japanese group that comes anywhere close to BabyMetal in international popularity. The video for their song Senbonzakura has more views than Gimme Chocolate. Wagakki Band is even better live as their stage shows are musical extravaganzas that rival the very best BabyMetal concerts.

What she is doing with her vibratos and traditional sound is both very hard and takes great training to make the beautiful sound ahe does. LOL, Been waiting on you to react to the Wagikki Band, you reacted (Blown Away) just as I thought. The lead singer was the catalyst for the formation of the band. They were friends in the Japanese music world and well known. That is Beni playing the Shamisen with the bachi (not a putty knife!!), She has 4 Shamisen for the concert as they are in different tune for each song. An assistant tunes them during concert as she swaps them out. Just put in Beni in seach and you can see her play solo. They played in the US, NYC and LA for sure.

YESSS!!! Luv it!! Japan musical performance that came best second only after Babymetal. Been around since 2013, their music incorporate Japanese traditional instruments with modern ones. Even the singing (Yuko Suzuhana, vocal and lead) is done in traditional Japanese style called Shigin.
HOMURA is the usual introduction song for them. Their live concerts are phenomenal, and their music videos are always visually elaborate with clean sound mixing. The usual path after this is usually SENBON SAKURA; here's the link to its MV: ruclips.net/video/K_xTet06SUo/видео.html . Highly recomnended! ;)

How does a band like this come together? This is the story as I understand it:
Take four incredible musicians, who are at the top of their game, lecturing in music etc., and know each other from the trad scene. They do a lot of seriously great stuff on their own and in other bands. One, the singer Yuki, has the spark: is really into preserving and updating Japanese culture, and saw a way to assemble the best of the best to do exactly this. Add 4 modern instrumentalists who are also really high calibre... they are indeed a supergroup :) Throw in a little bit of luck with timing, support (e.g. a nicely timed expo appearance) and there you go.
What is amazing is that you have 8 individuals each expressing a different aspect and attitude, and blending together to make something incredible that indeed is similar to the fusion of trad Irish and modern, but even more powerful (we are not even getting the full base of the Japanese drums through the You Tube).
Easy to understand how they rocketed to success.
Really nice to see you guys getting as blown away by them as so many others are. Keep up the great work!

Fun fact: Metallica was formed when Lars put an Ad in "The Recycler" looking for musicians to jam with. So yes...You can find amazing talent in the most unusual places.

I will call this band a miracle. The vocalist may have gathered friends and colleagues she admires, but either way, what are the chances of this idea coming to such a good result? It's just the right people on the right time, on the right place.
The vocalist made a band with the shakuhachi and koto player first (Hanafugetsu). They are still active. But at some point there was a decision to try something new. The idea of Yuko (the singer) is to make the traditional Japanese folk more popular by mixing it with modern music, like rock and pop.
All 8 band members have quite an experience before this band. 3 of them even meet in 3 or 4 other bands, they collaborate with other musicians ect. Because most of them are composing the Wagakki music and have different style, in the end the band explores many genres. Their first album is only vocaloid covers though. A good start, if i can say, for a few reasons, but since then they have only original music. I will drop some suggestions now.
Tengaku (same vibe as the so mentioned Senbonzakura, both covers)
Iroha uta Hibiya live 2015 (also cover)
Strong faith (feast for the senses)
Sabaku no komoriuta, Tori no youni, Okinotaiyuu MV, Nijiro chocho (ballads)
    Ikusa, Howling, Guren (rock)
    Synchronicity (jazz)
    Ignite (latest one)
    Bou getsu, Hotarubi (prog)
    Hakushu kassai (fun to watch)
Tonno mongatari gogo/yonyon/kyuyon, Chie no kajitsu, Gobousei (is packes with Homura) live performances with different instrument combinations. There are more, but they are not present on youtube.

Should check out Utada Hikaru's Devil Inside, Kremlis Dusk & You Make Me Want to Be a Man performances at her Utada United concert... those songs are originally pop/rock songs on the EXODUS album, but at the concert, she rearranged them to be more rock... he and her talented band killed it...
