- There are some moments in football that live on forever. Moments that echo around the world, that seem to change the entire landscape in an instant, that set fans off arguing for decades. In this new series on COPA90 Stories, Eli will be bringing these magic moments to life with the help of the people who were there, and examining how they shaped the world around them.
First up, we have the story of David Beckham between 1998 and 2001, almost unbelievably neat - a perfect narrative arc of sin followed by redemption, with the entire story resting on one ludicrously cool moment. We all know him as an unquestionable national treasure now, but it all could have been very different….

Thanks Toby, your support means a lot! 🙏
Ah mate toby sort it out you mug this cheesey AF!!!
So this is Basically Copa 90 version of SB Nation Rewind
Beckham is the reason I started to play myself, I remember practicing free kicks behind my house for hours. He is a legend for me & the reason I support England even though I'm german!
Im actually speechless what a weird statement...
@@drewskih4005 ok idk what's your problem dude?
Same! I'm English tho. I'm 24 and for anyone a similar age, you know that Beckham was the coolest footballer in England. And I'm a Liverpool fan
The lack of football footage is a big turn off, is it too expensive? I don't get it
Welcome to RUclips (rights issues galore)
Its RUclips, do I need say more.
But they also cannot use some fan footage from stadium?
@@michasjanur7256 it was 2001. Cameras in phones didn't exist and you wouldn't have being allowed to take a video camera into the ground
People really sleep on this channel... this channel has truly great content about all aspects of football and I feel like it gets no respect or the views that it deserves
Amazing video. Documentary quality. Keep up the good work.
It was David Beckham that really gave world football a space here in the States. He’s one of the reasons I got into it in my youth during his Madrid/LA Galaxy years. Him and Borussia Dortmund. It was those two that made me just fall in love with the sport
I am hooked on Copa90. The production, history facts and interviews are the best when you present your episodes. National news and sports can learn a few things from you.
its the football channel for people who are not into football
I agree with Rooney
I got goosebumps watching this video. Great story. Great story-telling.
Eli in a video = Instant watch
As an American that has no clue about Football (soccer) these videos are fantastic, every video I learn more and more, I can’t get through them fast enough

Would it be possible to add some subtitles on your videos. I like them very much but as I'm not a native English speaker, I've some difficulties to understand without subtitles.
Btw great job on all the videos !
Click on the right corner of the screen if youre on mobile (the settings button) and you can pick the auto generated subtitles. Not perfect perhaps but they seem to handle british accent very well.
I was there. Unable to put it into more words than that & anyone else who was would understand. Simply sensational.
he was so good, i as an arsenal fan just wanted to be him. i had the champagne boots, i wanted the hair. he was also just a phenomenal footballer
how this man hasn't got a knighthood is beyond me
What he doo
Have you heard him talk??
1:16 Andy Tate!!
Ahahaha bloody hell
You're next video should be about the Brazil vs Germany 7-1 match. I've got mad stories about that night
This is an awesome video more please!
Thanks! Which topic should we cover next?
Wow wasn't expecting to see KG here, big ups
I remember seeing us ( United) play at Upton Park, 2nd game of the 98/99 season I think, and the stuff coming from 3 sides of the ground was toxic. Horrible bullshit basically. Yet he was brilliant for us that season and he reacted to it the right way. Then a few years later he’s top of the tree again for England. I bet those fans who were calling him every name under the sun were the ones who were now saying he’s the best. Plus that World Cup in 1998 was actually pretty crap. We scraped through the group stage and although a bit unlucky against Argentina, we ultimately went out in the 2nd round. Unlike the 2 previous world cups we were in where we got stronger as the tournament went on.
You could of done so much more with this concept, you need some footage of the game with the interviews over the top. Really feels like it fell a little short.
Fantastic. Mad you put this quality material out for free. Great stuff. Good to see the Ramble lads on, too. Even without the footage, the audio commentary had the hairs on the back of my neck standing up. What a memory.
Thanks Chris! What would you like to see next on That Moment When?
Pete Donaldson acted so subdued here compared to when he's in Abroad in Japan's videos being wacky & all.
haha yes!
Nobody else ever think "but it was just a qualifier". The true greats do this in world cups. In the knock-outs. As an England fan, this was the start of the 'wasted generation'.
"But it was just a qualifier..."
...a qualifier that you HAD to win in order to even get to the World Cup.
And if my memory serves correct you had Albania in that same group as well. Says a lot when you have Albania in a WC qualifying group and still put it at risk because trust me, as an Albanian I can truthfully say our football is absolutely dogshit. You'd probably see a whole bunch of Sunday League divisions with a higher quality of football and more fairness than the Albanian top flight, and I'm not even joking.
Did Simeone and Beckham ever have a little chat after that match? Never understood why people went against Beckham after the Simeone dirty over reaction... It was clear what had happened but nobody ever listened to "why? It wasnt his fault" I felt sick when the new season began, it was disgusting.
3:36 you wouldn't have a haircut like that if it wasn't for Beckham. He made it acceptable to be metro.
ffs we wouldn't have exited wc2002 if we lost greece, we would have had playoff against ukraine. the best reason why that goal was fantastic was because it meant the 1v5 win over germany meant somthing!
The guy with glasses looks like Chris hamill when he’s 45
Anyone know the music in the opening?
Beckham was great and all and i actually watched him play, but he gets more recognition because of his "star" status then his football and of course he was english, there were better players at the time that didnt got half the attention he had. He was good, but not that good.
Playing for the most recognisable and supported club in the world helped a lot too
Agreed, he was a good player and that's about it really. The nostalgia glasses really are strong though.
I agree, Beckham might be the most over celebrated player, not in synch with his actual skill and talent, in the past 30 years.
Nonsense, he was the best player in the world in 98/99 season and was robbed of the Ballon d'Or
@@gingetomassi8153 Rivaldo was one hell of a form and reached WC final. And maybe you are right (maybe) still better payers have come and gone and dont have half the attention he has. Never denied he wasnt great, but not THAT great.
David ist the Reason why i became a Manchester United Fan, born and grew up in Germany with two local clubs in the Bundesliga near at my home.
Love that! Favourite moment from Becks?
Fuckin plastic fans.
@@civilservant9528 Of course it's a little bit plastic, dont't get me wrong im still supporting my local club in the bundesliga and visit most of the home-games but Manchester United is my guilty pleasure.
@@copa90 my favourit becks moment is his goal against westham or his assist for ronaldo (the now fat brazilian one) at real madrid.
Legend.
The editing and jumping back and forward in this video is fairly confusing and unclear at times. Other than that it's a good piece of content
Becks became a gOD in 98' reciving a red card after Cholo Simeone little provocation
Ok I got this question if you’re we’re alone watching this match who do you listen motson or tyler or other ?
Tyler all day
And I love Motty
Beckham shouldnt get that 1998 red card.
Funny that no one mentions that the ref in that game kept inventing fouls since Greece scored the second goal and got back in the lead huh
Goodness, what is that last song?
The english national team with beckham could not even qualify for the European cup in 2008, because Beckham was a God at that time.
I am not sure he was the issue considering that after they dropped him results did not improve.
Eli you look just like Sid Sriram
is that girl- gail the snail from its always sunny in Philadelphia
The free kick goal didn't even matter because Germany drew against Finland. And then beat Ukraine in the playoffs anyway.
CivilServant95 They had to equal the points of germany or better. Otherwise, they’d have to play playoffs. So, for immediate entrance, yeah it matters
that was not the moment we thought we were finished...it was there 2nd goal..
England v Greece was the first game I ever watched still TIL this day my favourite ever goal and I’m not even a red
Everytime I see/hear that moment I get chills and I dont even remember it happening. I was 2 years old at the time
Incredible moment! What would you like to see us cover next?
@@copa90 david Healy scoring for northern Ireland against england 1-0 7th sept 2005
@@copa90 well im a Wolves fan so anything Wolves related!
He was a pretty good player but nowhere near many other players around at that time
Disagreee. Underperformed or was overrated most of the time but for a few ýears much better than given credit for.
Love becks
Real drop in quality. Couldn’t hurt to keep the Audio at a consistent volume, surely. Chronology of events was pretty hard to follow as well.
Call me carzy but i dig this new copa 😂 tbh i find the duo which shall not be spoken of irritating...
Copyright has ruined fucking everything
David Beckham getting sent off reminds me of when Wayne Rooney got sent off v Portugal in 2006
Imagine producing this video and not being able to show any footage LOL absolute fail
Shit, this loss...
He was never a god. Good player, not great. More famous for being good looking and a star outside the pitch, married to a Spice Girl.
boredror exactly
He was even a great player, but not a world class player. The problem is that many people thought and still think he was world class because all the fame and media attention he got.
Eli is god David Beckham is god
Beckham was just an overrated player who could just kicked free kicks...beckham never reached the semi-finals of a big tournament with his national team because he wasn't good enough!! Beckham was just another British overrated player like kane, Rooney, etc.
Stop using the word god so lightly.
People are so brain dead nowadays.
Great video but please, please, don't invite the Mundial chap ever again. He speaks like a child who's just discovered football and internet porn on the same day.
Got to echo the previous comment, they're talking about goals + incidents without showing them + it doesn't really work..........
We're talking 20+ years ago so it's not fresh in anyone's mind....... you just want to see what's everyone's talking about.
That moment when Beckham became a god......... will not be shown......... we're just going to talk about it........
This is podcast material, more of a listen, than a watch.......
You could even say it's a bit of a tease, if you can't show the action you're on about then you should leave it alone, is the conclusion I've come to....
Of course, that's only my opinion + you might disagree........ in which case you'd be wrong, but I've shown you what's what + that's your lot.......
You're welcome........
since when a man becomes God ? lol
Even if you see simeone is a cheater! And his team ALTM
I'll never forgive the Argies for egging on Kim Milton Nielsen to send Beckham off. It was a yellow card offense at worst on Simeone.
Top 3 most overrated all time...no doubts
What a load of TOTAL BOLLOCKS, agreed he scored a great free kick which meant we didnt have to have a 2-legged playoff v Ukraine. We wouldn't have got that draw v Greece but for some obvious diving for the freekick and penalty.
?, so what's the total bollocks?
@@glennoconnor1130 Read the headline, should read "the day DB became vasty overrated"
“GIVE THIS MAN A KINGHTHOOD”
David Beckham is the most overrated player of all time.
Underated*
Lol you're probably 21, quality player
Thomas Burns - You are preaching to the choir, brother.
Ableist nonsense
He was already a god to man u fans the English are the worst football fans in the world
GOD of BRTISH PROPAGANDA
All talk no action what a load of bollocks
Yeah, he's good and that, but he's a bit overrated isn't he?
For people who don't watch him he is overrated.
@@rockzs74r Is he the best England player of the last 30 years? I wouldn't say that he's a class above Scholes, Gerrard, Shearer, Campbell or Seamen, even if we take club as well as international performance into consideration.
Matthew McNeany Guti is 10x better than beckham. The true football greats of that era was Zidane, Luis Figo, Bergkamp, Raul, Thierry Henry, Brazilian Ronaldo, etc. Beckham was famous simply because he was a celebrity and only popular in Britain. His actual football talent was non-existent apart from crosses and free-kicks.
@@losgalacticos9066 I don't really know Hernandez well enough to comment but I wouldn't want to go too far the other way, he was clearly a good footballer with a great deal of talent who would have started in many European teams of the time, part of a treble winning Manchester side who were really quite good for a long time, and he did get a bad time of it from the British Press.
@@matthewmcneany defo not the best english player but probably the best in a England shirt, if that makes sense? Where as Scholes completely underperformed even when played in his preferred position
