Instructional time lapse video of the full-build, paint and weathering of the 1/48 scale McDonnell Douglas F-4J Phantom II "Rockin' Rhino Limited Edition by Eduard as shown by The Inner Nerd
The first part of this video shows the use of Photo etch parts and scratch building techniques to detail hydraulic pipes and electrical cables professionally and cheaply around both the cockpit and wheel bays.
The second part shows surface preparation techniques such as filling panel gaps and seams with modelling filler and sanding them smooth to get a seamless join between parts. Also basing techniques are included in this section using Mr Hobby "Mr Surfacer 1200 & 1500" to prime the surface ready for painting.
The third part of the video demonstrates the black-basing technique used to achieve a pre-weathered look and surface texture replicating that of an aged and worn aircraft. Harder & Steenbeck Evolution Silverline is used at an operating pressure of 15PSI and a 0.15mm needle + nozzle during this process. Salt weathering is also used detailing how to create a worn look on specific areas of the model. Also included in this section is the jet exhaust painting using Alclad 2 Lacquers and Tamiya clear paints to create a burnt metal effect
Decals follow painting with the aid of Mr Hobby Mr Mark Setter & Softer products. These products allow the decal to form to the shapes and panel lines of the surface which you can see in the video.
After this the machine polish process is shown to remove the "orange peel" effect from the clear coat. This is done using Tamiya sanding sponges in 2000 & 3000 dpi grit and Tamiya Polishing Compounds.
Next is the weathering of the model. This is started using Abteilung 502 oil paints thinned to a wash consistency. Then used as panel line wash the oil is applied across the model to achieve a dirty, grimey & worn look. Further weathering including unthinned Abteilung 502 oil paints to create streaking and water marks concludes weathering
The final part of the video explains the final assembly of small parts including landing gear, lights, antennas and canopy fitment as the model nears completion. All final assembly is completed with CA superglue.
Items Used Airbrush: Harder & Steenbeck Evolution Silverline Needle/Nozzle: 0.15mm
Compressor: Badger 1100 with Anti-Pulsation Tank Working Pressure 22psi (1.51bar)
Paint: Tamiya Acrylics thinned with Tamiya X-20A Thinner Brushes: Pure Sable Brush - Various Sizes
Glue: Tamiya Extra Thin Cement/Loctite 406 Superglue
    Sanding: 3M 600p / 800p / 1200p / 2000p / 3000p sheets & sponges

Great work. Reminds me of how I used to paint my models (but not as good or detailed as you have shown) when I was a kid (mid 70s). The F4, P51 and P47 were my favorite models back in the day. I liked making jeeps, tanks and ground stuff like that for the most part because it was fun dirtying them up with mixed paints and creating dioramas for them. I remember using a candle to create entry points for shells on tanks. That was fun. Just had to add this, I remember the F4 was tail heavy and P47 was nose heavy. I used slip weights from my tackle box to balance the planes so that they'd sit on all wheels.

I put together a model F-4 while I was in NAOCS (class 12-69) and my Marine DI gave me a lot of shit about it being a less than perfect build. I have a new kit now, but I've not opened the box in years. I blame it on him, sorta.

My comment was not to deprecate your fine work, I was just relating that our aircraft were never as weathered as I see being depicted on 60-70’s era jets. The squadron commanding officer of VMFA-451was a stickler for keeping the aircraft in good shape, so we washed them often. Keep up the good work!

yeah i hear you on that. i build too and i often have to work with only whats in the kit. after market parts can sometimes cost just as much as much as the kit. but some of these kits are not accurate and we often follow instructions.. people are sometimes retarded.. lol..

amazing! man, polishing the x-22 with the drill was realy hardcore, looks more like the automotive modelers, I would recomend just use aqua gloss from alclad ll for this task, it dries super thin, do no orange peel at all, one good trick is go buffing the paint with some glass cleaner cloth to smoth it before the clear coat (if you buff enogh you can even do the decals on top of it skiping some steps) wonderful Phantom! brilhant weathering!

The Hi-Vis '00' A/C especially the CAG bird will have Hi-Vis markings meaning they won't let them get weathered. They will most times be glossy. Even the beat up old F-4Js were still going into the 80s and each Squadron CO Bird would be Hi-Vis, its called polishing a turd. Have a look at the historical pictures, he did a spot on job.

    • @skinbackyourpeel
      @skinbackyourpeel 6 лет назад

Sorry, I have to disagree. Yes they were hi-viz schemes and the boss's bird would of got more attention generally than others, but they would not of been as bold as represented on this build
