I never watch 'Coronation Street' now but did back in 1970 and despite the houses not being built full scale I adored the first brick built set, especially loved the gap in the row of houses (where number 7 had once stood), loved the park bench in the gap, I think the faded paint and broken windows in the viaduct added something to the feel of the whole Street, and a gap in the row made the street unique. Is there anyone else who loved the first brick built set?

Yes - me!! Saw it a few times through the grille in the gates on Grape Street: absolutely tiny!

@@johntomlinson6849 yes, I can imagine it was, I read somewhere once you'd have had to have been a match stick man to have lived in one of the houses! I remember there was no chimneys on the roof, but still my favourite outdoor set. Soaps were real family shows then, was allowed to watch it religiously then, also loved 'Emmerdale Farm', but 'Crossroads' was my favourite of the three soaps. Loved Noele Gordon's Meg Richardson, and the horizontal and vertical closing credits, (achieved by using two ATV cameras). Lovely to hear you have seen the 'Coronation Street' outdoor set via the grape street gates.

I came across these old 1960-1970's episodes on RUclips and its absolute gold. Today's soaps are so ridiculous (evil twins, possession, everyone is super rich and glamorous). I didn't grow up in GB, but I know all these characters in my hometown. Plus, the HUMOR of these episodes: Ena/Elsie slanging matches, The Ogdens, the snarky Mike Baldwin, the loudmouth Vera, etc. just brilliant!

I agree, it's just not the same anymore, the feel and heart of all the past characters was there, even if corrie was having a poor period with bad storylines and characters you could still see and feel the golden years and it helped to still accept the show for what it once was, now with the new site it just feels very manufactured and false, it's definitely lost its heart and soul now its left granada.

Yes, the producers post-millennium definitely missed a trick:
The tendency in the digital age has been to always try to pander to younger generations, but most of them no longer even bother to watch conventional TV.
The real money is held by the older folks and they have a deep passion for notalgia - Corrie should have made them their target audience and left the fast-paced, over-sexualised, ulta-violent unrealistic nonsense to other programmes.
Like pretty much everything in modern British life, Corrie used to be better.
      Much, much better.

Thanks for this, very interesting. Was lucky enough to get a tour round the old set in 2014 before it was bulldozed. Probably around that time i stopped watching it- load of rubbish now. Far too many characters , stupid storylines and most of all completely lost it's humour!

I feel the move could prove the death knell for the show. I've rarely watched since the tram crash, as I feel the stories have gone downhill. The new influx of characters hold no interest for me, and how much longer are the likes of Bill Roache, Anne Kirkbride, Eileen Derbyshire, Helen Worth, Sue Nicholls and Barbara Knox likely to continue? The veterans had their best storylines years ago.

Interesting but sad to think they used to have some great actors and then you see the person that plays Tina is actually no different to her character, therefore being paid a wage just to be herself. No acting skills there.
