I believe the whole programs auto-update system should be disabled and should never do anything in a background.
Also, removing all edge-related files and all related keys in registry + changing the owner of edge folder and disabling any access for all other roles beside owner - helps as well ) Yet the downloading process may still use bandwidth to download that crap. That must be addressed separately.

Hat is exactly why I looked up this video. Updates worked fine until recently (2023). I'm strongly feeling the issue is Edge missing. I may have to invite satan back into my home.
EDIT: You were right. I removed that registry folder at the last step, then installed Edge from the MS website (Powershell command would not do it), and Windows Update finally started working again. I hope I can remove it again and keep doing regular system updates. I can't stand Edge.

I still have the mentality of the needs of using Windows due to my workflow but I'm slowly changing that by actually getting used to a Linux environment and I love it. It probably will not, but if a significant enough amount of people use it developers will be forced to set it as a priority as well. So instead of just developing natively for windows and amcs they have to do it for linux.

More recently Chris is saying that he can’t get rid of Edge anymore. He says he hates the thing, and a lot of his tools stuff breaks bits of it. I doubt he will find a way to get rid of it, based on what he has recently been saying.
He warns that if you have any interest in using Edge, then you should not have anything to do with his stuff.

I've been doing a bunch of benchmarks and daily driver tests over the past few months of all the web browsers, and I have actually settled on Edge. Performance is the best due to extensive optimizations for Windows, and it generally uses less resources in the process. Chrome is indistinguishable in speed, but the resource difference is massive in Edge's favor. Microsoft also doesn't have as much incentive to keep privacy out of the browser, so they actually implemented great privacy features.
I believe my top three would be Edge > Brave > Firefox. Edge is the fastest and most feature rich chromium. Brave is likely the most private and has the best ad blocker (but ublock origin does fine as a plugin). Firefox (standard version) is the only usable non-chromium browser, and the only issue is that it can be noticeably slower; if it was faster I would use Firefox.

I had it show up on my wife's laptop one time a while back when I was doing some routine tasks and didn't want it there, but also, didn't want to mess anything up on her machine. • @alanelston2330
      @alanelston2330 2 года назад +2

I think the word chromium in the context that it is used here and in the video, is talking about the main coding that is behind the Browser.
Previously and currently, Google used this coding in their Browser, and so the Google Browser is often referred to as Google Chrome.
Initially Microsoft tried to develop their browser, Microsoft Edge using a different type of coding. This different coding was used originally in Microsoft Edge. But there were various problems, so reluctantly Microsoft changed their Browser to use the similar Chromium coding such that in many way their latest Microsoft Edge is similar in its working to the Google Chrome Browser.
In any new or re installation versions of Microsoft Windows, or in any they find with no Microsoft Edge Browser, the new chromium version of Microsoft Edge will now be installed
But as this change to chromium was reluctantly done, Microsoft would currently be happy to leave any existing Microsoft Edge Browsers as they are if they still have the non chromium Microsoft Edge.
Part of Chris’s trick is to that after he removes Microsoft Edge , he adds something to fool Microsoft into thinking that the original non Chromium Microsoft Edge is installed. So then Microsoft will not attempt to re install Microsoft Edge.
Like many things which Microsoft want us to have, they assume they succeed in forcing us to have them, so they rely on them being there, which may mean that there presence is necessary as other things may have some dependency on them. So unfortunately there might be some problems in the future if you remove Microsoft Edge.
At the end of the day, I think you have to decide whether you give in and let Microsoft organize your computer and part of your life, or attempt to keep some self control. If you chose the latter you are advisable to keep in touch with the work of people like Chris who try to keep on top of developments and changes that Microsoft may make.

I think when one uninstalls something, and it comes back without asking for it, that is all the more reason to uninstall it. If they're forcing it on you, there is a way they are exploiting you that benefits them.

People complain that Linux is hard to use... Windows has plenty of its own headaches. I have had Edge Disabled for months and the Edge updater is set to run every hour, I mysteriously can't prevent it even in the task scheduler. It's so annoying because it wakes my computer constantly, I put my computer to sleep, every single time I look at it the screen is on and I hear the fans running

The 14 September KB5005565 update for my W10 20H2 machine failed repeatedly, for no apparent reason. On a hunch, I downloaded and reinstalled latest Edge, and the update went through smoothly straight away. It seems that Edge is required for updates, or this one at least, to work and, if it's not there, it needs to be reinstalled. I had added the "No Edge" registry key, but the Edge install ignored that.
Edit: It appears, looking around, that this problem occurs if Edge has been removed, but the empty folder "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge" is left behind. Suggested remedies are either to reinstall Edge (as I've done) or to delete this folder. I know that Edge reinstallation will allow the update, but can't say whether deleting the folder will also do so.

It would be great if we could remove all the Win10 apps as a separate script.
I have skype app installed, it doesn't appear in apps at all, and I can't uninstall it, nor delete it.
Also annoying is that we have adware which we can't control in explorer context menu.
Tons of useless menus, while I can't see the stuff I need, like xnview convert, which works great in win 7.
Is there a useful safe tool to help with this ?
