  • June 6, 2018 | Bob Boilen -- When 14-year-old Grace VanderWaal came to perform at the Tiny Desk I had to confess to her (and her mom) that, until my "accidental concert experience," I had no idea who she was, nor did I know what America's Got Talent was.
It all started this past February, when I went to the 9:30 Club, a 1,200 capacity music venue, to see what I thought was a show by rock guitarist Grace Vonderkuhn and her power trio from Delaware.
When I arrived for the unusually early 7:30pm show, I saw a long line of young teens wrapping around the block, mostly girls, and a fair smattering of adults who didn't look like the regular concert goers who head to the 9:30 Club on a weekday evening. And as you've likely guessed by now, the show I was about to witness was not the riff-rock guitar player we'd recently featured on All Songs Considered but a very different sort of wunderkind who won the hearts of millions as the 11th winner of America's Got Talent and, now, a Columbia recording artist.
Inside the club was a massively enthralled and enthused crowd and it didn't take long for me, one of the few older guys in the club, to also be completely swept away by her performance. It was a dazzling show that felt fresh, sincere, bold but also simple, with Grace on ukulele singing songs such as "Moonlight," a song about a friend dealing with mental health issues, which she also performs here at my desk.
    "She always has a smile
    From morning to the night
    The perfect poster child
That was once in my life
A doll made out of glass
All her friends think that she's great
But I can see through it all
    And she's about to break"
Despite what I feel is my broad love of music, I was reminded how easy it is to get comfortable in the musical confines we devise for ourselves. It's easy to stereotype artists and perhaps be dismissive of something that falls outside our comfort zone. But Grace's show and music reminds me to keep my thoughts and judgements open. So, if you're about to pass on watching this one, figuring you're not going to connect with a young teen and her music, stop. Take a deep breath, open up your heart and let Grace VanderWaal enchant you with her unique talent.
Grace VanderWaal's current album is called Just the Beginning.
    Set List
    "Moonlight"

You point out something. Her brilliant talent is that she's totally comfortable performing totally stripped down with nowhere to hide - and when she made a mistake she just smiled and kept going. As a fan I'm perfectly happy to listen to the occasional honest mistake in order to get honesty through and through. I love Grace more than I've loved an artist in many years.

I think she is already the guitarrist b1tch... I'm sorry for her, she is singing with a masculine tone that is forced you can notice. The aesthetics of her say a lot too. I get the nature of what you’re saying. I’ve almost made my own comments on this video multiple times. But the spirit of your comment is powerful and positive enough that I’ve never wanted it to hide under another comment and nobody has highlighted it yet. I’m not all about trying to force others to believe the way I believe. I think the world is more beautiful with multiple views and cultures. Having said that... I’d like to share my view.
Cooperation’s and places on the map... locations... don’t cause destruction to people. People that see opportunities to use their power and influence cause destruction to people.
Walt Disney built Disneyland for the love of his dreams, family and children AND grandchildren. So it’s hard for me to hear so many seeing it be the capital that causes pain in families and children. He wanted to make an affordable place to find magic in the world. Where everyone, regardless of income, could come together in inspiration. He wanted them to fall in love with his imagination... not his image. If you’ve ever published your dreams into the world... even a comment you’ve made on RUclips, you can easily see the way your work can be perverted and twisted into an intention you didn’t have.
It’s sad that pedofiles opportunistically join where children are. Outside of schools you can see, easily, how many registered live as close to the radius they’re legally bound to. The same way people hungry for power and money congregate around affordable businesses that have promise. Opportunity to have access into such opportunities through work or connection to power isn’t much different. It makes sense that opportunities for artists are given by people who don’t have their best interest in mind.
You guys are amazing for speaking up and saying you don’t want that anymore!
I really don’t think shutting down Disney will create that kind of safety. But I think if we all buy from artists, and support companies that protect and provide protection for people we’ll take the power from those who don’t.
That might be too extreme for some people in the world. But writing emails to companies about what you want to see and what you don’t want to see happening is an easy way to help the correction. People sell what we’re willing to buy. People gain power with the money and influence we give to them. If you tell companies what protections you want to see, they do listen when the public need gets bigger than the expense of the protection we want to see in place.
Writing to Disney about wanting to see all people involved with children having background checks like our teachers get is a start. Or causing children to be in only group settings with an unbiased advocate for them?
Sadly, we’re even seeing educators have inappropriate relationships with students too. So there will always be a “ball dropped,” so to speak.
About Grace Vanderwaal... I hope her amazing family stays close enough to her to keep her grounded and protected. And I hope she’s blessed enough to grow up healthy and with out the hardships of depression or mental illness. Which often times is worsened severely by an unpredictable artist’s schedule and demands on performance. Living in the spotlight has to be one of the most difficult ways to keep yourself through scrutiny.
Thanks for sharing and letting me.

"Darkness Keeps Chasing Me." Such a depth! Please, don't ever think it is a "downer," as some people tell you. This song is so real. It allows people to feel, and feel it all. We all feel like that at times, especially artists. To feel and to express it all, the way it is, no matter how dark, is not a "downer." It is freedom. And to hear this song performed so beautifully, emotionally, and honestly, as you did here is a true gift.

I mean you have to factor in her age , which makes her singing/songwriting THAT much more incredible. Grace, all of us have the darkness chasing us from time to time. It's good to sing it, say it and let everyone know it's okay. It's okay not to be 100% happy all the time. It's the human condition and maybe, if it starts in a song, it will become okay to say and give to those who are having emotional difficulty. Wonderful song, wonderful message, wonderful young lady.

I don't want to repeat myself, but she is just incredible. Set aside her personality, it's her significant, unique voice that keeps me shaking my head unbelievingly all the time while wondering about my goosebumps I even get while listening to the same video / song for the hundredth time .
Exactly what I love, a kind of minimalism, just like Tracy Chapman, Ed Sheeran, Jewel and other artists. You don't need autotune, nor an orchestra or special effects to improve this girl's performances / songs.
Her qualities as a songwriter and her ability to act as a role model to so many people with obvious, casual ease ensures that she will still be a star in 10, 20 years.

At times, the things that give us the greatest grief or hindrances are the very things we are to do and become, because there is much to gain for ourselves and to a large scoop of people who are in need. You're quite the inspiration. Much Appreciated. Jim

Thank you for hosting Grace at the Tiny Desk. As someone who has followed her closely since her very first appearance on AGT, I can attest to how far she has come and how grounded she has remained. She has great songwriting chops (her strength) for someone so young, and her vocals continue to improve, though she retains the rawness and cutting edge that she has always demonstrated. I hope she will continue to pursue her dreams with passion and energy, and will continue to receive the guidance and support of her family, friends, and professional colleagues as she develops into the artist she wants to be.

Mutlu Sarıtaş Umm....what if she just continues to put out great music? 😂🤷🏻‍♀️
She's successful because she's authentic and writes her own music so I doubt her, or her label/management would ever change that. What makes you think she would ever not write/co-write her own lyrics? You must not have much faith in her if you think she's ever gonna lose what makes her style raw lmao

@@asosyalpicimamk Aside from the fake instruments thing, you're basically just describing recorded pop music of the last Century. Actually, artists of the past /wanted/ to sing about sex and drugs but they had to sell out and keep a clean image, disguise the true meaning of their songs behind sanitized lyrics in order to inoffensively keep selling records. The first radio hits-turned-record-sales by female singers were written by an old man lyrically exploiting the romantic ideals of young girls, lol. Remember Beach Blanket Bingo (think about what that name means, lol)? Marilyn Monroe? Janice Joplin? Madonna? Debra Paget? Joan Jett? Leslie Uggums? Celine Dion? Billy Holliday? Nothing new under the sun.. , this generation's problems are not new. Just evolved. But the same goes for this generation's virtues.
