  • While studying abroad in Japan, Micah Peterson found himself being repeatedly stereotyped because of his race. While this was an unpleasant experience, Micah managed to turn it into a positive and returned home with a deeper sense of pride in both his Blackness and his Queerness.

    Thank you so much for telling your story! As a black gay man in the USA, I believe we are conditioned to look down on ourselves, just like much of society does to us. I didn't even realize this was happening within me until I was much older and became more introspective. I finally came to understand why I've never felt happy or fulfilled. For decades, I internalized all that negativity that came my way and it made me hate myself unconsciously. I finally decided to seek therapy and it has helped a lot.

    Beautiful and I couldn't agree more. Black men already are faced with so many challenges from our very own and add from other race groups can be quite challenging but standing resolute and firm in who we are will make us stronger and confident in the long run. Excellent vid.

    Hello Micah, I am glad to see that you were finally able to come to terms with yourself as a black gay man (who is super fine, by the way) despite your somewhat traumatic experiences in Japan. I appreciate you sharing your story and trust that you will continue to experience love and happiness, especially through your interactions with "our" people.

    I can TOTALLY relate! I may not be able to tell you much about what songs many hip-hop artist sing, but I can tell you all about Wagner's Ring Cycle! But it's interesting that as much as we think things have changed (for us as a people), we still have a long way to go. With the exception of the color contacts, this was my story over 30 years ago. I wish all the best for this young man. ✌❤✊

    I have had the same experience (as a gay black man) but it was 30 years ago in South Korea. All cultures evolve over time and at many different ways and paces. The best experience of all is when you get to understand that people are people (cultures are superficial at some point) and in understanding how to use the golden rule, you will enjoy the world.

    You're a gem brother! Understand that no matter how much you love yourself hatred will always surround the black man. On that train in Japan you were making loving eye contact with a cute Japanese man. You did not realize that he was making hate-filled eye contact with you. Love is always a challenge, never a resting place!

    • @louisdewit4429
      @louisdewit4429 Год назад

      I’m not sure if that Jap on the train was hate filled or just so awkward with the situation, all Japs being so closeted, that he ran from it. Similar situation happened with me here in Holland with a Japanese gay guy at my place after we had good sex. Running. Saw him next day in a bar, wanted to say hello, starts hiding behind a pillar. No. I was pretty then. 24. He had eyed me up. Had come voluntarily with me. Sex had been good. Weird people. I’m blond white.
      😢. 40 Years ago. It still hurts. 😂

    I was in Japan for two weeks and I remember the people staring at me on the train into Tokyo. I am Caucasian. An older woman would not sit next to me. Being from the States, I really felt the xenophobia of the Japanese. First time in my life.

    The ravenous exporting and consumption of Black American culture has brought our experiences all over the globe. A resultant consequence, however, is that its also brought on marked increases in the wholesale festishization of the Black body. I hope, Micah, that time and other factors have brought you to a place in life where you now understand and accept that your skin is not your sin.

    Have you ever thought that perhaps the Japanese guy in the train were totally straight and simply did not like the way you “checked him out”. Perhaps he just moved to another cart to avoid the uncomfortable looks he was getting. It may not have had anything to do with you not being of the same race as him. Sorry this was just something that immediately came to mind when watching this clip.

    What a handsome man. I live in China and found that there is a strong sense of racial stereotyping. People stare a lot, too. Not because they are sexually attracted to us but because we look so different, physically. I also found that men will tell you how handsome or cute you are and not be gay. Living anywhere "different" can be a challenge, and even more so if you are not white.

    I was in Africa (various countries all majority black) on a busabout and they told my bf and I that we could not show anyone we were a couple or that we were gay as they couldn’t guarantee our safety. The hets (both black and white) were ok, but we weren’t. It was so angering and sad. Similar when I was India...the guys ( brown) had some weird fetish with my skin (some families even wanted their babies to touch me for some reason ) but the couple of times I said I’m gay the whole mood changed so I learnt to be very careful ...
