First power on resulted with R2 moving forward/back when I moved the joystick on the controller left/right. I cut out the couple minutes of me swapping both pairs of wires. Second power on R2 now moves forward/backward correctly but the left/right turning is reversed. I will change a parameter in the Shadow MD code for the Arduino Mega 2560 to correct that. I'm not sure when I'll do it, as it means I have to assemble him again to verify the fix since I took him apart again to get him inside the house.
The dome turns the opposite of the way it should but I'm not sure if I should change that (swap the wires on the Syren) or if I should leave it as it makes it more intuitive to change the dome direction when looking at him from the front.
Hopefully the video comes out OK. I was having some editing (OK, editor) issues. I'll repost it later if it's messed up.

Awesome! He's looking great! Yes, he's zippy but you'll get used to it. For the dome rotation, I would suggest having left/right match the drives. When you're out and about with him, if he's driving you'll most often be walking behind him, so that will make things more intuitive. You've done an amazing job with him.

Thanks Jason! Matching the dome rotation to the drives does seem like the way to go. I wouldn't have been this far along without your videos and build log on astromech.net.

amazing! works so well. I was always planning on mine being static but your recent videos have really made me want to make him fully working - yours looks so good

Thanks! I had thought of just going with a static build but decided to at least print the parts needed for a motorized build. At some point along the way it seemed like with all the work it takes to make the droid, I might as well go the full control route.

freat to see it fianly on three leg. it drive better than mine already ( i have wheel skiping and broke a leg at Celebration so hope you glued itwell ), Andsoon enough you'lllearn how slow it is onceon convention compared to your testing drive. You will realy learn during convention the most.
Just, you inverted the foothoses connection to the batteries. Upper foot hole goes to nearest battery hole and lower foothole goes to the farest battery hole.

Good catch on the hoses! I was impatient and wanted to get him moving so I just plugged them in as quickly as I could!

I have long way to go. But I grateful that you did these videos it will help a lot. I was wondering what camera do you use for your videos? I really like the way you explain all that you did. I hope you show the dome and all as well. It really clear up a lot for me. I building an aluminum R2D2. But you electronic sections are just what I needed.

Thanks, I'm glad the videos have helped. I just use my phone to make the videos, Google Pixel 3a. Pretty outdated but it seems to work OK. I printed an adapter so I can mount it on a tripod, although most of the time it's more convenient to just hold it.

So is that part of the shadow programming that makes him randomly skwak and talk or are you pushing buttons? I'm running padawan 360 on mine and don't think I have that option but it would be cool.

    • @TomsProjects
      @TomsProjects  Год назад +1

That's part of the Shadow MD system. It automatically makes sounds every so often and you can also have it make the dome move randomly. It's part of why I went with that system. I'm not sure if Padawan can do the same as I haven't looked into the capabilities of that system.

Hi Tom, great series! I've gotten my R2 to work, well sort of. I am using the Padawan 360 system. The dome, sounds and right motor all work great. The left motor does not want to move. Any thoughts on troubleshooting why it doesn't work? I don't know where to begin.
    Thanks,
    Ed

Do what you can to narrow down where the issue is. First thing I'd try is to swap the wires that go to the working motor with the wires going to the non working motor as close to the motor as you can. If the right motor still works and the left motor still doesn't work, then it's likely the motor. If the left works and right doesn't, then you can assume the problem is further 'upstream'. Next, see if you can swap the left/right connections further upstream.
With luck you can pinpoint the problem by using this technique. It will depend on how many connections there are that you're able to swap as it may be a problem with the motor, the output from the Padawan system, the input received from the controller, etc...
You may have to make some temporary patch wires to make it easier, like a pair of long wires that will allow you to swap the motor wires without totally dismantling the droid. If you do that, make sure you properly crimp the patch wires, as you may introduce a fault from a bad connection via the patch wires.
Hopefully it'll end up just being a loose connection that you can easily find. Good luck with your droid maintenance!

@@TomsProjects Hey Tom, it was faulty wire connector. Even though it was joined correctly, no power was going through it. That is why the motor was not functioning because it was not receiving power. Once the connection was repaired everything went back to normal. Thank you again for all your help!
