I loved this game but I didnt even get 200 hours out of it because I thought it was very limited. I like making traditional levels, so the lack of basic stuff like slopes, vertical levels and level themes really hurt my experience. Mario Maker 2, on the other hand... I have over 400 hours lol. There are still some features missing, but the game feels much more complete
I love Super Mario Maker 2 as much as the next guy, but MAN do I miss the personality of the first game. SMM1 feels like it was made with passion, while SMM2 almost feels like it was made out of obligation.
Yeah I agree, even as someone who does like the sequel more than the first. At the very least by the time MM2 came around, a lot of the community had gotten way better at making levels. So that makes up for it imo
I think while SMM2 is a more complete game, something about the first one was just perfect. Gamepad made making levels such a breeze, so much so that when the sequel came out it the level editor felt super clunky to get used to. The online was great, and all the little Easter eggs were a treat to discover. Also the online presence of the first one was unmatched, seeing Markiplier, Jacksepticeye and Game Grumps making videos on it was surreal at the time, and then others such as Carl Sagan, DGR and Panga all grew as creators because of this game. It holds a special place in my heart that the second game could never reach
I remember making so many Mario Maker levels, and recently I went back and played them too. There’s like 25 levels, though only like 6 were actually uploaded due to the 10 level limit.
you’re in my top youtubers right now man. your videos are so well made and your voice is so nice for these. i love the research and how much you care about these games. W man’s.
I think the next console is gonna have a Mario Maker 3, given how the world maker is just added in and there is still many possibilities for a 2D maker. I doubt there is a 3D maker at release, I do hope for more update this time and perhaps add the 3D aspect in as the final update as it’s tough to do like the world maker. I think there should be more power ups, some of them are missing in maker 2, like a Kirby star in SMB1, hammer and tanooki suit in SMB3, the carrot in SMW and ice and penguin suit in NSMBU. There should also be options to disable liquid even though there is no placable or changeable liquid, this allows for things like no water forest theme or even the addition of quicksand. I also think there can be more options and feature that interact with liquid like sprouts and also waves. There can also be some more themes like a mountain, beach, volcano and tower theme. The aim this time is so people can use at least all of the basic element of all game so they can make levels similar to Nintendo. The night theme of tower theme can be that it turns to a desert tower, the volcano theme can be that it falls meteorite, in mountain it can let the screen wrap around and in beaches having reverse physics between water and air. For enemies they can add the penguin, the rock spike(spike in mountain theme), the fuzzy, the crab and maybe the ice Bros, fire Bros and boomerang bros. The can also add some covered walls for secret and can be used for secret or hiding mechanisms. To prevent trolls, only Mario is allowed to pass through from the inside to the outside, enemies can only pass from outside to inside. There should also be baby yoshi with green and red in Mario World and pink, blue and yellow in Mario U, in other game styles they are replaced by glow blocks. Not only that, there should also be stretch blocks like Mario World, the scale platforms and grab/ice blocks for gizmo. For super Mario 3D world, they should have night themes and tracks this time, I can understand why don’t allows for semi solid top to be inside of walls, a no wall version can be the solution to prevent wall clip. Enemy stacking should be in it alongside new power ups like double cherry and lucky cat bell. There should be collectable like star coins and green star in 3D world. They can also add swap block that swap when you jump, adding more headgear like the shell mask, light box and coin box. The airship theme of 3D world can be replaced by an airship and let the bowser land theme be the tower theme. Perhaps add these arrow lift and I think the cloud lift should be able to go through by ground pounding and a static version would be nice. Some more bosses like bowser in a car would be nice. Perhaps add the rolling hill and gears from 3D world and NSMBU. Levels in main four themes should have a confirmation menu and also a button to move everything that can be moved to 3D world. There should also be a new galaxy game style with switching gravity and an open star structure. I don’t think there is pre-built planet, rather I think there should be gentle and steep curves that allows you to make planets yourself. Of course, it won’t be as free as the planet from galaxy but it’s enough. Mario is able to walk up and the gravity will switch. In the maker’s camera option, there is also a option for controlling the camera to rotate or not when switching gravity. There should also be some power ups like the bee, boo, spring and rock mushroom, fire, ice and cloud flower. Finally red and rainbow star along with spin drill and Yoshi, there can also be power Mushroom and Mario have a life system similar to galaxy in this style. The enemies can be octoomba, goomba and perhaps koopas and even have shells behave like the ones from galaxy. The ice theme should also have frozen water and also Mario should be able to have all move set of 3D world style except roll and add triple jump and spin. There should also be star collection with each level having multiple stars, perhaps you can choose what star to collect and maybe even have gizmo like gravity arrow or gravity wall. Not to mention I think both 3D world and galaxy should have touch and cursor compatibility with 3D world having the touch block and microphone platform and galaxy having the pull star and sling pod. They can also add the launch star and sling star too. Perhaps some block that can be switched by spinning and maybe some electric current. They should also have comet that allows for clear condition to be attached to it, the clear condition should also work at checkpoint. Beside all of the additions, the world maker should have dramatic updates such as in the level, able to have a third area with a secret flagpole(NSMB) or keyhole(SMW). With the secret flagpole there should also be secret exit. We should also have world map style with SMB3, SMW, NSMBU and SM3DW and a better search system like the ones in levels. This time around, we should be able to upload more Super worlds like 2 or 3 and have separate names. Of course they can add the mountain and beach theme into the super world. Each super world should have a 2x2 screen and with each screen still being 7x3 and also having warp cannon(NSMBU) and warp star(SMW) for secret passage, the secret path is also not visible til unlocked. Not only that we should be able to upload 2 levels and perhaps also a function for adding a bonus World 9 after 1-8. There can be red toad house that reward the player with items and also some choice like keeping power ups after beating a level or send back to tower after death. The item system should work differently depending on the world style like an inventory in SMB3 and NSMBU or item holding slot like SMW or SM3DW. I think we can add switches into the world map and block paths this way. That will be the improvement for super world. I also think this game should have an economy system with star coins. They can be earned by playing others level, gaining like from your uploaded level or getting star coins/green star from level. A bigger reward for beating super world or uploading one. Not only that, you will also get daily star coins form levels uploaded or super world uploaded. This can help you buy certain Mii costume as well as bumping a level by 1 for a small fee(only once per day). It can also help you maybe to unlock some locked levels by Nintendo. I think the level element should not be locked by delivering but maybe the first time you use a item, it ask you if you want a tutorial or not. The item tutorial shorts will also be put alongside the control tips and the courses. I think the interface should be more lively and 3D this time around, the game should also designed for touch and joy-stick like 2s course part wheel can stay but should also add a grid view similar to 1s. The copy and paste buttons both should have different orders to avoid clicking twice and also they should rearrange buttons for touch. The building should have an option for bigger select so it work better for joy-stick, like a button to enable it and click A will shrink the cursor to the original size again.
You made an amazing video here. I loved your analysis on aspects and technical aspects that aren't mentioned as much such as the sound design. I can see lots of creativity with your script and the execution like your little goodbye montage at 15:25. You even made the amiibo costume switching part match up to the Mario music that came from the credits of the Wii game! Love your effort! ❤ PS: The sequel has a special place in my heart and I will look forward to your video if you choose to cover it.
I remember getting Super Mario Maker for my Wii U and it was so fun, I plan on getting Super Mario Maker for my Switch sometime soon so I can hop back into the fun of creative 2D Mario.
You are 100% right about the infectious urge to play Mario maker by seeing a level not even halfway through this video I couldn’t resist the urge to pop Mario maker 2 into my switch
I can think two reasons why they decided to cut it out. amiibo isn't as popular as it used to be and since costume mushrooms were limited to SMB1 style people created way more SMB1 levels instead of using all the themes
In my opinion, i think the whole idea of having an official way of creating and sharing levels is what made it appealing, Even if various fan games like SMBX do it slightly better lol, the whole feel of doing it "officially" makes it better for me, and it's easier to share Even the 3ds version is incredibly fun to play despite how flawed it is
This is my Number 1 favorite Mario Maker game ever on WiiU!!!! Almost every week I connect with Pretendo network to be online again and go to Miiverse and all that, but I do the most is play SMM1 and upload levels online or play people’s levels that they uploaded.
When it came out, I really wanted to play it, but I didn't hava a Wii U. So when it was ported to 3DS my parents bought me it. It was a very different experience from what I saw on my favourite gaming RUclips channels. For instance, to unlock objects in order to create levels you had to complete a kind of story mode consisting of eight worlds as other Mario games. Also, you couldn't share your own levels online but you play the ones from Wii U. I always missed the opportunity to share levels that U had, but Maker 2 has enabled me to do it, so I'm okay now. Still, it was a very enjoyable version of the original game.
I put over 800 hours into Super Mario Maker on my Wii U and used all 100 level slots. I absolutely love it. 2 is the better game but it lacks some of the charm of the original like amiibo costumes.
@breadandcircuses8127 I grew up with Mario, and I love the gameplay of Mario games. I've also played Sonic, Donkey Kong, Kirby, New Super Lucky's Tale, etc., but nothing hits quite like Mario.
I always loved the idea of making my own levels, But I love Mario Maker 2 more than one, because it's a lot less limited. But I am still salty that Nintendo only chose to support this game for a year, when it could have used a lot more themes. But I'm willing to bet all my money that they're saving that stuff for Mario Maker 3
You would think with people like markipier and Jacksepticeye play this game the wii U would become way more popular. Nintendo should have sponsored them really
you think the game is good until you realize that LittleBigPlanet was offering the same experience (and even more) since 2008 on PS3. So even if I like this game, I have a hard time fully appreciating it when another license has been doing 100 times better than it for a long time (if we forget LBP 3).
