Thanks for the video, was pulling my hair out as changed belt and tensioner but belt still jumping...Checked alternator clutch and it was seized, cheers you are a star....
My one fell of about half mile from my house. It had been making a rattling squeal. And steering felt heavy. Got to have someone take a look. Ive sent your video so they know what im talking about. Thank you for a great video.
Wish I'd seen this a year ago. 2006 Mercedes A180 CDI making exactly the same noise. One garage wanted £600 to change the crankshaft pulley which meant dropping the engine. A second opinion said there's nothing wrong with the pulley but couldn't pinpoint the cause of the noise. Unfortunately, the car was written off early this year.
Wonder what the owner said when you told him that beside the ac job he need a pulley job also...he must've been cracking with joy... once again ...good job...keep it up
Great explanation Rob in how the clutch works. Also good to see how to remove and install the pulley. Keep up the good work and have a great weekend! 😀👍
I've seen quite a few of these go on Fords. Galaxy, Transit. Few VW's. I can't believe how much noise they cause sometimes. One of the worst I saw was on a 1.8 petrol Avensis! I couldn't believe it when I realised what it was. I'm glad my 4 wheeled turd doesn't have one. haha
I've also had the same problem about the noise, garage replaced alternator, belt and water pump. It is a lot quieter now, and my wallet is a lot lighter.
Great work Rob. I've never understood why when these pulleys fail they cause so much noise and vibration. Surely it would just turn like a normal pulley...
They do still turn like a normal pulley but they vibrate the belt and alternator too much cause they lock up. Have a look at the link that I've pinned at the top. Cheers mate
Hi Rob, My car almost sounds like this from the moment it is put on there is a very loud rattling noise which is really embarrassing as people can hear me coming before they see me. I have a 1.2 Vauxhall’s Corsa. It sounded like the fan belt so it got changed because the garage spotted it had not been wrapped around the pump (I’m not really sure what that means but maybe you do). I had this fixed and it made a louder noise & still did not take away the initial noise. So he put the smaller belt back not around the pump. Do you know what the problem might be ? Do u have a number or contact information as I’m desperate now for the noise to go
I got the tensioner off but upon putting on the new tensioner I could not get the bottom bolt in as the holes didn’t align. There is no way I can compress the spring using a spanner. ‘Before’ I take the tensioner off should I compress it whilst on the car then put a pin in the holes to compress it. When I get the new tensioner on how do I get the spring compressed to align the bottom bolt holes
Nice to see the belt before and after. All the diesels over here sound buggered all the time - I would have not noticed a thing HAHA - thats why your a Tech and I'm not. Cheers buddy
I have similar problem, my belt vibrates exactly shown in the video followed by a bad rocking noise Where can I find you to help me fix this annoying issue ?
looks to have had a bit of work in that area? recent alternator, new clutch on AC compressor. Dual mass or slight dribbling injector causing vibrations and damaging the auxiliary belt parts?
FIrst time I've seen this car Steven. I tend to think though initial cold start prolly an injector cause settled down after a few seconds. Best of it is the guy only paid £300 for it!
Nice diagnosis and repair Rob. Excellent explanation on how the alternator pulley functions. If I wasn't SUBscribed already I would be after seeing this video! :)
Thankyou. ..i went today...the guy they suggested it was something else... cant remember what he called it. He did say it will be a long job, engine has too be removed. He is charging me hopefully around £250.00 ish
We have loads of cars with them now. They don't actually spin backwards they allow the alternator to “free-wheel” or “overrun” every time the engine decelerates and, at the same time, dampen vibrations at the alternator. The backwards thing is an easy way to test them. Check this Gates page for more info www.gatestechzone.com/en/problem-diagnosis/accessory-drive-system/oap-function-tests
No it’s the belt that drives the auxiliaries such as alternator, air con some power steering pumps and a like. Timing belt connects between the crankshaft and camshaft and keeps the engine in time. HTH
One Auto, thanks I just discovered this after googling it! Well my 07 corsa D has had that done. But no info on any timing belt change, 96k miles, but it’s not rattling.
That's the thing, they're not supposed to be a normal pulley. They allow the alternator to “free-wheel” or “overrun” every time the engine decelerates and, at the same time, dampen vibrations at the alternator. So when it locks the belt slaps around creating a loud noise.
mate could u help i got a corsa c and when the car is sitting at idle the engine vibrates a bit and when i rev to 1500 revs it vibrates bad then when i go past that it stops. and the same when i drive slow it vibrates then when i speed up it stops i got a 1.0 12v. if you can advise i would be gratefull
dennis hopkins mine sounds like something is grinding in engine if I drive 1500 or below rpm - been driving for a good while now not sure if it really needs urgent attention lol.
ANYBODY HELP !!!I I think My alternaor is gone bad today out of nowhere under a little acceration my battery light started to flash when I leave of the throttle it goes off . After driving a while on my way home I got a solid battery light , dim lights , slow windows and wipers etc battery light stays on , I have a high idle now around 1.2rpm idle Diesel engine What could it be would it be the alternator clutch pulley or just a bad alternator??? It's a Fiat fiorino 1.3 multijet
eddieg66 If the set up is the same as in the video and the tensioner won’t move then your tensioner is seized. If you pull down on the lower horizontal part of the belt the tensioner should move.
Rob, is this the Fiat Multijet engine? Mine has an annoying low load shudder at 1400rpm, pain when your following traffic. change down and she is fine.
Hello Rob, i have a noise in my auxiliary too(you can hear it in my video below). I asked 3 workshops what they think where it come from - they said the auxiliary belt or parts of it... I changed the Waterpump and the tensioner+belt, the noise was still there and i thought it only can be the alternator - so i changed it but the noise is still there. Do you have any idea what it could be? the AC should be ok i think. ruclips.net/video/IfMprPbLJk4/видео.html
Hey Rob, yes, and the AC-compressor. The noise wasnt there without the belt, but i dont want to switch on the motor for longer times, because the waterpump is not turning without... maybe i have to check it again... do you think the crank pulley can make these noise?
Mal te So if the noise went away with the belt off it’s something else left. Maybe the A/C or the crank. It was hard to hear on the video so I couldn’t say for certain.
i checked it without the belt, the noise is still there :( maybe its the timing chain? i realy hope not.... ist very expensive and the car has only 95.000 km... its to early i think :/
I have what's all Corsa 1L heating system is not working and what is the too hot call system is not work babe engine going hot is no coming down and most what is going out of the
Why in God's name do you need a one way bearing on an alternator? Since when have you ever seen an alternator run freely while connected to an energised (ignition on and drawing a load) electrical system of a car? This reminds me of the stupid dual balance flywheel concept they use in the Audi's these days...unnecessarily over engineered.
Thanks for the video, was pulling my hair out as changed belt and tensioner but belt still jumping...Checked alternator clutch and it was seized, cheers you are a star....
well, gentlemen, this guy is an example what happens if love your work.thx for saving.
Great video mate mines just started making this noise getting it looked at tomorrow cheers it makes it so easy to explain to the garage.
My one fell of about half mile from my house. It had been making a rattling squeal. And steering felt heavy. Got to have someone take a look. Ive sent your video so they know what im talking about. Thank you for a great video.

Thanks 👍 With refrigerant in the system and the A/C switched on, the belt noise was really loud.
Suzuki Wagon DDIS 1,3 uses the same motor, so I just used your video to change the alternator on my car. Thank you very much. :-)
Great explanation Rob in how the clutch works. Also good to see how to remove and install the pulley. Keep up the good work and have a great weekend! 😀👍
Thanks Terri. Same to you 👍
I've seen quite a few of these go on Fords. Galaxy, Transit. Few VW's. I can't believe how much noise they cause sometimes. One of the worst I saw was on a 1.8 petrol Avensis! I couldn't believe it when I realised what it was. I'm glad my 4 wheeled turd doesn't have one. haha
Very difficult to hear the racket over a diesel lol but great video Rob
I've also had the same problem about the noise, garage replaced alternator, belt and water pump. It is a lot quieter now, and my wallet is a lot lighter.
Have the same thing in my 18 corsa😢
Is it the process you showed us?
Great work Rob. I've never understood why when these pulleys fail they cause so much noise and vibration. Surely it would just turn like a normal pulley...
They do still turn like a normal pulley but they vibrate the belt and alternator too much cause they lock up. Have a look at the link that I've pinned at the top. Cheers mate
Does the clutch pulley have a reverse thread? You appear to be turning it clockwise to loosen it off the alternator.
Hello sir I have got Corsa e 1.3 cdti and on turning ac on the rattling noise comes out what should I change ac pulley or all pulley thanks
Hi Rob, My car almost sounds like this from the moment it is put on there is a very loud rattling noise which is really embarrassing as people can hear me coming before they see me. Nice to see the belt before and after. All the diesels over here sound buggered all the time - I would have not noticed a thing HAHA - thats why your a Tech and I'm not. Cheers buddy
Best of it is Steve he came in for an A/C gas and I was like.. what the hell is that noise! Cheers mate 🍻
I have similar problem, my belt vibrates exactly shown in the video followed by a bad rocking noise
Where can I find you to help me fix this annoying issue ?
Hi, does a 1.3 Diesel Chev Utility Z13DTJ Engine have a tensioner for the timing belt? I can't locate it. Kindly advice.... I'm Teboho
looks to have had a bit of work in that area? recent alternator, new clutch on AC compressor. Dual mass or slight dribbling injector causing vibrations and damaging the auxiliary belt parts?
FIrst time I've seen this car Steven. I tend to think though initial cold start prolly an injector cause settled down after a few seconds. Best of it is the guy only paid £300 for it!
I have exactly the same car and I think that's the problem I am having. How much would this job cost to do?
This was exactly what I needed, cheers
Great video Rob. Never knew these existed
Thanks 👍
@@OneAuto do you recommend any belt dressing or silicone bud?
Nice job. Sounded like there was some early stage dmf rattle there aswell future vid maybe 😂
I heard that when I watched the footage back but couldn't hear it at the time. The guy only paid £300 for the car so doubt he would have it done 😊
Thanks! Helped loads. I know what I need to do now. 👍
Nice work as always Rob.
Thank you sir :)
Hey Rob, what would you say is the car make you see least in the garage? I'm thinking Toyota and Honda.
Correct sir
Nice job mate done loads of them and timing chains lol don't understand why they have snow tires on lol
Snow tyres...You're paying way too much attention 😂 cheers mate
One Auto, hahaha well that is my job I'm just a tire fitter
Nice diagnosis and repair Rob. Excellent explanation on how the alternator pulley functions. If I wasn't SUBscribed already I would be after seeing this video! :)
Hey thanks Glen 👍
What fuel consumption should have this engine ( astra h)?
I have this sound but only when the car has been off for a while. Is it the same problem?
Quite possibly
Does the noise stop after a rev up on the engine? My parents car makes the same noise but it stops after a heavy rev up (around 5k and release).
Yes it can quieten down when revved but returns on idle
Great vid Rob 👍
Cheers
Jamie
I have this issue at the moment. Roughly how much should it cost me in the UK to get this fixed?. Does the engine need to be removed?
Mani Virk about 1.5 hours of labour plus part. The alternator has to be removed not the whole engine
Thankyou. ..i went today...the guy they suggested it was something else... cant remember what he called it. He did say it will be a long job, engine has too be removed. He is charging me hopefully around £250.00 ish
Nice job rob
I still can't wrap my head around that pulley. Why would it need to spin backwards if the belt only goes one way?
We have loads of cars with them now. They don't actually spin backwards they allow the alternator to “free-wheel” or “overrun” every time the engine decelerates and, at the same time, dampen vibrations at the alternator. The backwards thing is an easy way to test them. Check this Gates page for more info www.gatestechzone.com/en/problem-diagnosis/accessory-drive-system/oap-function-tests
One Auto, thanks
Very helpful video
thanks,very helpfull
So is a aux drive belt and tensior a timing belt? Recently had this done but not familiar with car engines lol
It would seem if it were locked up absolutely tight, that it would act just like a normal alternator pulley. What causes the noise?
That's the thing, they're not supposed to be a normal pulley. They allow the alternator to “free-wheel” or “overrun” every time the engine decelerates and, at the same time, dampen vibrations at the alternator. So when it locks the belt slaps around creating a loud noise.
so does the alternator have a little fly wheel in it? is not a regular alternator is it?
It's a standard alternator just a different pulley
mate could u help i got a corsa c and when the car is sitting at idle the engine vibrates a bit and when i rev to 1500 revs it vibrates bad then when i go past that it stops. and the same when i drive slow it vibrates then when i speed up it stops i got a 1.0 12v. if you can advise i would be gratefull

It's a Fiat fiorino 1.3 multijet
It turned out to be a bad alternator, lucky its fairly simple to replace.
Are you local mate where u from bud
Nice Job. and Video.
Schöne Grüße aus Germany
Karl
Sounded like a VW at the beginning! =)
They all sound the same...loud!! 😂
Change also the bearings! supereasy
Ayup mate, do you have an email I could send a video too? Mine sounds like this too but would appreciate some help! Thanks great vid
Good thanks you mister.
Nice job Rob ........... it still sounds like a bloody old ratty diesel though LOL
HaHa true story :)
Good vid thanks you bud
I can't get the bloody tensioner to move what am.i doing wrong all iam doing is slackening the center bolt
eddieg66 see 4:40 spanner size 15mm turn it clockwise to release.
One Auto, done that and it's not budging even with a pole on the spanner there is no way that is a fixed roller is it ?
eddieg66 If the set up is the same as in the video and the tensioner won’t move then your tensioner is seized. If you pull down on the lower horizontal part of the belt the tensioner should move.
thery cause all manner of problems when they seize on the 1.9tdi galaxy
Rob, is this the Fiat Multijet engine? Mine has an annoying low load shudder at 1400rpm, pain when your following traffic. change down and she is fine.
It may be Dual Mass Flywheel vibration. You can check the pulley like I showed in the vid 👍
WhitwellMike B get your injectors checked would cause a shudder At lower rpm under load 👍
Thanks Kenny
is that a Fiat engine in the 1.3 them rob ?
Yes a variety of.
Alternatör kasnak problem 🔧🔧🔧

That engine still sounds awful lol! Good job though Rob :)
Standard diesel Lol
My Combo sounds exactly the same it seems to have camchain near death rattle which sounds a lot worse than the pulley noise .lol
Yes! That is "DIESEl-Sound"
Viele Grüße
Karl.
I have what's all Corsa 1L heating system is not working and what is the too hot call system is not work babe engine going hot is no coming down and most what is going out of the
🙋♂️
Don t mean to be rude here, but that engine sounds like a piece of shit anyway.
HaHa it sounds worse on camera TBH Lol
It's a diesel, it sounds healthy for a diesel engine to me, the smaller ones are noisier most of the time anyway.
It's a healthy disel sound...
