My car failed an mot for what looks to be the exact same problem. Quoted at least 300 quid to replace the whole steering column with a second hand part. I said no thanks, and then found this video. Hopefully will save me some money, gonna give it a go tomorrow 👍🏻
@@OneAuto took less than 5 minutes to take the cover off, locate the bolt and tighten it, job done. Passed the mot. So easy thanks to this video so thanks a lot 👍🏻
Nicholas Fulgenzi , disconnect the battery under the bonnet and it will stop the airbag going of while working then push both little holes in to unclip on both under sides of the wheel column, after that it should come out lossely and in the back of that there is a green plug and orange plug to disconnect using a little flathead then put your new airbag in plug it back in the click everything back in and reconnect your battery 👍👍
You know £300 aint bad for a steering column if that's complete I'm trying to find one for my viva now at a decent price for the price scrappers are asking I could send mine off for refurbishment for cheaper and have a lifetime guarantee!
Mine was making a horrendous noise when turning or going over bumps. Took it to a garage and they couldn’t fix it and told me to take it to a Vauxhall garage.. Watched this video and have fixed it myself.. You are a legend.. thank you very much..
The same problem we have had for a year now in our Corsa 2010. Today we got the courage and time to tackle this problem. The irritating noise is gone. Thank you so much.
I had a knocking, vibrating noise when driving over correlated surfaces, I changed the stab links which improved things but there was still a vibration rattle coming from the dash top. I saw your video & there was the faintest of knocking noise when moving steering side to side. No where near as loud as your one. I decided to check the uj & was tight but managed to nip it about a 1/16 of a turn! Took it for a run & sorted!👍👍 Just wanted a say many thanks for a vibration ,rattle I've had for 6 months! 👍👍👍
Brillant video!!! I’ve been to 3 different garages and all said steering column is to replace. And wanted to charge me over £1000. You saved me fortune. No more knocking.
can i just say this one of the best helpfull videos on youtube ,after much speculation with my daughters corsa mechanics telling me it was top mounts or play in the rack ,10 mins this morning and car is sorted ,thank you so much sir happy days
Thank you Sir, fixed the same problem on my pizza delivery 2011 corsa d 1.2 now, she has done nearly 190,000 hard miles .had one clutch. 2 water pumps and a plastic coolant housing. the secret to long engine life and timing chain is change the oil and filter every 6000 miles 5-30 fully synthetic.
Wish I’d searched for this on RUclips earlier - a brilliant piece of detection work! I spent a quite a few quid changing other steering components and the noise was still there. However when I tightened up the torx bolt identified in your video the noise is now gone! Cheers mate!
This video is brilliant 👍👍 thank you so much. Once I got hold of an E10 female star socket it took 15 mins to fix what we thought was a major problem. You are a legend 👏👏👏
My corsa was doing the same plus every cats eye or bump in the road was making a knocking noise so I thought was in for track rods, new steering box and a load of suspension components. This took me 5 minutes and the car is quiet as a mouse! Thank you so much👍👍
Greetings from Romania. I had the same problem, and initially the mechanic told me that the steering box had failed, but I showed him this clip and it turned out to be the same screw, which was loose, tightened and the noise disappeared. Thank you for help!
Fantastic, spent last weekend under the front looking at all the joints under there, total waste of time, one view on this video and half an hour jobs done and klonking fixed. Many thanks for posting.
Thanks so much for your video. Had exactly the same problem with my daughters Tigra .....expensive repair until i watched your video.....exactly the same problem that you had....all fixed in 15 minutes....cost zero...thanks...
thank you very much for video, our corsa has been to 3 different garages with steering knocking, all of which couldnt find the problem and wanted to replace universal joints and steering rack. After watching your video it took me 15min to solve the problem and saved hundreds. cant thank you enough
Those steering knocks can be hard to diagnose b/c they transmit the knock up thru the column. Good diagnosis & video Rob! Wonder how many shops would have thrown a rack at it?
Mine fails its mot. I was told it was loose linkage in the steerage column failed. So, it goes up on the ramp, then I get a call saying they checked all the linkage nuts, but it's worse. I go in to garage and told £600 quote for parts, labour, and vat for a brand new rack, new wishbone arms and the cost to cover the mot. New UK legislation stops me being allowed to drive it to a different garage, even when it's still within last year's mot expiry. So I now realise I'm done over a barrel for mot repairs to a van barely worth £750 (after I've watched this video). Talk about a stitch up - gutted. It only had a sound defect like in this video, and was allowed to pass the mot last year with the same problem. I asked why that was? I'm told it deteriorated further, but no one would ever have noticed. This legislation is like a license to print money. But who am I? A walking open chequebook. I mean, if it was the rack, what are they made of? Bread sticks? By the time I get eyes on it again the work will all be done with the replaced parts gone to the skip. For all I know they won't even change the parts. Why would they have to replace the wishbones? Basically, you see your vehicle up on the ramp and are pressured to make a huge financial decision. An uninformed decision. They're staring at you like you're stupid, looking incredulously at you because they're all ready to get started and you're wasting their time. Unless it would be wiser to arrange a tow truck to take it away and bide you some more time? What am I entitled to do when it's on their ramp without wheels? I have to tell them I don't trust them until I've watched half a dozen videos on RUclips? This is yet another expensive lesson for a gullible fool such as myself. (Notice my restraint from swearing in anger)
Probably 9 out of 10 garages would just replace the rack, it's how they get paid and the extra £ comes from the car owner. Garages these days don't seem to want to find a problem which could be simple they just want to throw in new parts
Thank you for this video. You explained it really well and helped me with repairing my car. The shop where they repair my car couldn't find the problem and said to me to just live with it.
Thanks for the vid, I just aquired a low mileage corsa D with the knocking noise. Would clunk if you wiggle the wheel side to side and rattled through the top of the dash when you drove over loose road. Saw your vid and now sorted. The 2 bolts at bottom of shaft by clutch pedal were tight but the u/j pinch bolt under dash was very loose. A quick tighten and good as new. Cheers
Excellent video, my daughters car has the same knock. Steering components checked and told its in the column. I’ll sort this myself now I know what to look for. Thanks 🙏
My wife has this crap sound on the steering wheel After the some time driving on bumpy roads check lamp is on . Thank you for video ... will try to repair myself on the parking using this steps ..
Had the same knock on my 2010 Corsa D (first gen, like the one in the video). It doesn't render the vehicle undriveable because the bolt is far from being loose enough to pose a danger, but gotta say it's pretty irritating over time xD Anyway, I gave it a try with my socket wrench once I found the proper socket at a tool store...aaaand sure enough, mine was slightly loose too. Guess they weren't screwed strong enough at the factory during installation and vibrations did the rest... Tightened mine as much as I could...noise gone ! Number One Auto, many thanks ! :)
Hey champ...you just saved my girlfriends Day...her car had the same problem and I fixed after I saw your video.. thanks mate! Tusinde tak on danish :D 😀 😍 best regards from denmark
Hi again.. now I think the egr valve is dirty...do you have Any experience with egr cleaner or should we just replace it.? Its a 1.3cdti 2004. Do you have a video where its placed in the car? Best regards jakob and tina
Hi Rob We don't answer private caller numbers anymore...sorted as Leon would say. That would have required a new column and motor assembly at the local Vauxhall dealer im sure. Cheers
Had the same noise on my car, garage said it could be column, motor or rack. Saw this video, got under dash and could see the bolt. Without removing any panels, I could reach and tighten the bolt ( already had a set of E sockets ). A very easy check / fix. Problem solved, thanks ( Corsa D club 2008 )
Saved me £250 from Halfords. I didn’t even take the part off .. just found the bolt and purchased some a £4 tool from poundstretcher and tighten it. Works like a charm since halford could not even determine what the fault is so wanted to change the whole steering rack
Nice find mate. before watching the video I thought it would be top mounts or something. Replaced a few making similar noises. This electric assist is a right pain.
i had a corsa d until may last year and sold it to my sister, but i still love this car and keep learning about it for upcoming problems in the future. thanks a lot for this great video =)
well done , Really good video , thanks for taking the time to do it .I failed earlier today after an hour of looking , what i did do was clamp the middle of the column with mole grips and rock it from there , it didn't knock like that , so i knew it was upper somewhere but never found that pinch bolt . Ill go and tighten it up :-) cheers
Nice find mate, you might just have saved me hours looking for that!!we have one coming in this week with a knock that sounds very like that, thanks for sharing👍👍
Nice find,Rob!,I had a Lexus yesterday making the same noise, rack bushings were shot and you could watch the rack move all over. Those noises can be tough to find though👍
WUAOOOOOOO i've the same problem but nobody did a good diagnostic...tomorrow i'm going to fix this issue with your video....i'll let you know if it works but i'm sure about the restore!!! THX A LOT

Nice one, I've had exact same prob on my old Bora for the last year since I fitted a new steering rack, I cant have have nipped that clamp bolt up properly, all good now though.
Nice video.I always wanted to take a look of this type of power steering system with the electric motor mounted on the steering shaft..I wonder in case of failure, could the motor or the rack be rebuilt like hydraulic rack&pinion and hydraulic pump on older cars? PS: I guess not.The motor seems sealed.
Great channel yourself and bodgit and leggit are a good source of info for all us back yard mechanics .How do you rate the Autel scanners have a launch at the moment and it was good in its day but a bit past it now .
Thanks for that. I have the MS908 and like it a lot. The latest Launch are supposed to be good I’ve heard. If only one scanner did all cars perfectly, that would be ideal.
great video, thanks for sharing. I'm looking at purchasing a vauxhall meriva which has epas and I wondered, based on the fact it's a corsa based car, if the sensor is in the same place on the column as the car in your video?
Help - mine (2009 corsa d) knocks/creaks when I set off, break and steer past about 180 degrees. Nothing found on MOT, bushes and arms recently replaced. Sounds like it’s coming from the middle of the car maybe but unsure. Any suggestions as to what it could be would be appreciated

Great news Graeme!
Hi Rob
We don't answer private caller numbers anymore...sorted as Leon would say. That would have required a new column and motor assembly at the local Vauxhall dealer im sure. Cheers
Thing is I have a couple of customers that call me from their work that come up as private numbers. Cheers mate
tecnaman i can vouch for that!
Brillant video thanks very much , I just cured my car in 10 minutes as it had the same knock. Thanks
Hey mate! I would like to say thank you! Finally i solved this f....... problem !
Thank you. My wife has been on about a knocking on her car for a while. Thought it was going to cost me an arm and leg. Now i have a happy wife. 👍
Nice.. happy wife, happy life 😊

I’ve just replaced inner & outer tie rods & will now have to get the tracking done .
All because of this exact fault 😂 brilliant
Nice find mate. before watching the video I thought it would be top mounts or something. Replaced a few making similar noises. This electric assist is a right pain.
Cheers mate 👍
This helped me alot, I subscribed, i hope i can fix my car now. The mechanics are asking 250euros to replace the whole thing.
Great video bud, could save someone from getting ripped off. Had the same problem. Vauxhall wanted £1500 to replace with a new column.
i had a corsa d until may last year and sold it to my sister, but i still love this car and keep learning about it for upcoming problems in the future. thanks a lot for this great video =)
Always good to keep learning 👍

Thank you sir for making this video, it was invaluable 👍fixed my steering knock too!
Nice find mate, you might just have saved me hours looking for that!!we have one coming in this week with a knock that sounds very like that, thanks for sharing👍👍
Cool, hope it helps you out 👍
Great job. I have the same issue, so my first point of call is to tighten the uj. 👍
Nice find,Rob!,I had a Lexus yesterday making the same noise, rack bushings were shot and you could watch the rack move all over. Those noises can be tough to find though👍
They are when you’ve got nobody else to turn the steering for you 😀 Cheers Mike
thank you so much, I wish you a long happy life
Perfect , fixed my problem straight away. Thanks for the video 👌🏽
Maaaan OMG THANK YOU. YOURE THE MAAAN
It worked and i saved a lot of money
Well done on finding that one!
WUAOOOOOOO i've the same problem but nobody did a good diagnostic...tomorrow i'm going to fix this issue with your video....i'll let you know if it works but i'm sure about the restore!!! THX A LOT
confirmed!!! it works!!!!! great job!!!
Great hand action looks like you're very skilled and used to it😁😁😁
You taught me well Leon 🤪
very intensive investigation and great camera work. Mine doesn't knock but if it did this would be invaluable info.
I think the reason why it's knocking is because of steering wheel on the wrong side of the car lol great work love you videos you're a good tec
Thanks man 👍
great video Rob i had sort of same problem on a renault scenic but could not find fault so car was sold lol
That’s the best way to fix it Paul 😊
too right brought a mondeo instead
Excellent piece of information, well explained and well demonstrated, Thank You.
To fix this problem You need an E10 Torx shaped socket.
Simply put your head in the footwell underneath the steering wheel and look up. You will be able to see the hole without removing any of the trim.
Turn the steering wheel until you see the bolt
Have a friend hold the steering wheel in place whilst you tighten the bolt.
Mission complete 👍🏼
Ronnie Kray you explained after you watched the video
Nice try tho
Almost payed to have it all replaced until I seen this video. Awesome mate thanks ;)
My last 2009 D Active did this only 6 months after I bought it new. Luckily got it fixed under warranty.
Good find underneath and something so hidden bet you saved the customer some money there, Honourable mechanic !
Thank you sir
Nice one. Had exact same on a Fiat grande Punto with similar acces hole.
Thank you so much for the tutorial, saved me time and money as I was preparing to spend a bit getting it right.
Genius! Saved us loads of time and money. Simple fix!
Great thank you !
Got exactly same symptoms in my Tigra, seems straightforward to sort out !
Did it fix the problem on your tigra I've got same problem my tigra also rattles going over bumps.
Hi, Great explanation! Do you know if Vauxhall Astra cdti 17 plate would have the same setup? i've got a knock that the mechanic's can't figure out so want to give this ago if it is the same.

I cant have have nipped that clamp bolt up properly, all good now though.
Than you so much! I have exactly the same problem on my Corsa D 2011 model. I am going to buy a set of these internal torx tools and fix.
I had this exact noise, and this solution worked for me too, great video
Nice one, cheers
Very nice, not the electric assist but the troubleshoot, repair and video =)
Absalutly fantastic job saved me time and money

Thanks for your comment. The Rack is a standard mechanical steering rack. The motors can be replaced, not sure about remanufacturing.
Great video, had the same knocking noise, now sorted Thank you.
I don’t even own a corsa but found this diagnostic video interesting 🧐
Nice having an access hole. Fixed like a boss
Glen I was trying so hard not to say ‘sliding on the shaft’ during that one 😂
Don't hold back Rob, it is what it is ;-)
I’ve been quoted nearly 500 quid for a steering column & linkage 😩 exactly the same noise . I want to give this a go but it looks kind of fiddly 😖😖
It’s well easy, save yourself some cash

Haha cheers Ash

Thank you so much, sorted my issue!
sounded like it was gonna be an expensive fix .... good work
Brilliant video I know how to do mine now
Morning Rob! I like Jonathon's comment. Good fix and I'll stay connected though private caller. (ha ha) Those guys get me too.
Haha cheers Wyatt. Stop withholding your number 😆
Oh man I hate those ones where you gotta film up underneath the steering wheel!
I know it took me ages to get the light in on that shot. Cheers Jason 👍
Knockin' on Heaven's Door :) Looks like I have exactly same symptoms in my Corsa C 2005. Need to double check the bolts.
