Only now (almost 9 years after original posting), I am watching this video - I somehow missed it earlier. Always wanted to make this type of rice so now I know how! Also, glad to see I am not the only person who opens bags and such from the bottom ;-) Thank you so much for your good instructions, Maangchi!
Maangchi on the place setting, what is a 'hot' dish and what is stored in the fridge, then pulled out? I'm trying to figure out what I can bring to lunch at work and what would have to be put in a microwave-safe dish!
I cannot remember ever seeing a lunch table setting that made me feel so quiet, humbled, joyful, envious, thankful, hungry and in admiring awe at the same time. Multifeeling rice.
I finally was able to head to a Korean market and found a Multigrain rice already in a bag. It has everything you showed in the video. I went for the rice cooker instead and added the correct amount of water. It was one of the most delicious part of my meal! Thank you for introducing me to this dish.
i really wish i could eat like that everyday. this is my fave type of eating a little of everything and its considered a full meal. korean food is so delicious too.
This is now one of my favorite rice dishes. I have it about once every two weeks. It is so special to me. Thank you for sharing this recipe with me. I am Hispanic but my best friend was married to a Japanese man so she made sushi rice (the short grain white) my children loved it and we would eat it almost everyday with whatever our meal was. They loved it with eggs in the morning too. One of their favorites. Later when I was working with a Thai man, he introduced me to Jasmine rice so I started making that more. My children to this day prefer the sushi rice but will eat the jasmine when I make it. They are grown now and still feed my grandchildren rice almost everyday. Now, I have a medium size canister of brown sweet rice and one of barley, and a 32 ounce mason jar with black rice on my counter sitting next to my two huge canister. Of sushi rice and jasmine rice. It looks so beautiful. I always bought the big 50 pound sushi rice when I was younger and just would refill my big canister as needed. Now I only buy the 25 pound of sushi rice and 25 pound of jasmine rice to keep my canisters well stocked at all times. So it looks very pretty with the added smaller canisters of assorted grains and rice. I only buy the small sizes of those because I don’t make it daily but I want you to know how special it is to me. As I am a rice lover. I have 10 grandchildren and we are all neighbors so I always have rice ready for them at grammas house. oh and when I make Spanish rice, I use the jasmine. That is also very special to my grandchildren because I don’t make it too often unless we’re having Mexican food. I know this was a very long comment. I just want you to know how much I appreciate you. Rice is life 😊 I also make my own kimchi now going on one year. I always bought it from the store and my sons love it but now that I make my own we all love it so much more than store bought😊👍
I just bought all the ingredients and it cost $25 at hmart. I'm really looking forward to trying this recipe out! I do have an instant pot and will try it out!
I rarely comment on videos but when you started eating and then it cut to you looking at the camera waving your finger telling us how much you loved your lunch (8:30) I literally laughed out loud. You've got a WONDERFUL camera presence and, on top of your great cooking skills, you've got a great sense of natural humor. Thanks for all the hard work you put into filming, editing, shopping and eating!
I am so glad ,that you are always considerate of your viewers, many may not have the things/ingredients or utensils. You make sure to look from our perspective and arrange the cooking, thank you.
I bought a mixed grain rice from one of the Korean stores and mix with my white rice. I washed and soaked it for 2 hrs then I cooked it in rice cooker, mannnnn it was yummy my kids said , " Mom this purple rice we see it on tik tok and mukbang video, and wonder how they cook it, it's a bomb..thank you for sharing!
Thanks to you Maangchi! Lovely video! I am an Indian girl, we eat rice here as well. But trying Japgokbap will be very very interesting, plus learning Typical Korean Table setting was fantastic as well.
It might sounds weird to you Maangchi. My name is Paul living in San Francisco. I’ve been watching your videos for like almost 10 years already but mostly I watch on AppleTV. This is the first comment I did tho. I love all videos of your channel I love cooking. I just made the purple rice right now. I love eating it but I guess I have to add more black rice to make it more purple. Thank you for making more and more video.
Hi Maangchi. A very nice video, and clear instructions. So authentic too. In Australia, I mix brown, red, and black rice. I cook it in pressure cooker for 15 minutes and let it rest for 5-10 minutes. I sometimes cook extra and freeze, then microwave when I want it in a hurry. I have never thought to add barley but that is a good idea. Thanks again. p.s. the science says black rice is the healthiest of all the rices. It has the most anthocyanins, which are the chemicals that give plants color. These are phytonutrients that have many anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties....so we should all eat these more than white rice bye.
Maangchi can you please do a video on all the utensils that you use. For example, can you tell us where you buy these pots and serving plates (rice bowls) please, thank you.
Aloha Maangchi!!! Been your video fan for awhile. Lately missing mom's cooking so I made your Mung Bean Pancakes....omg I teared up eating. Thank you for stirring my memories.
Ah, Maangchi I think this is one of my new favorite videos of yours :) I remember eating Japgokbap in Korea for the first time; I loved the purple color, and how it felt extra nutritious. I always wanted to learn how to make it! I also really like how you showed us an "everyday table setting" - My favorite thing about Korean meals is how many different kinds of nutritious foods there are. I would never get tired of eating like that either, hehe :) And of course, I love your sense of humor... you never fail to make me laugh, you're so cute and funny :)
Thank you!I learned a lot from you.I am Filipino but I love Korean food.my kids are fussy eater but now they’re excited every time I cook.My eldest son always says”Mom smell good again am ready to eat”.
hi maangchi! my mom and i just received our copies of your newest recipe book and we're so excited! i just had to order one for each of us. i haven't been cooking in a while because of my busy schedule but after watching this video and receiving your book, it's getting me all excited about cooking again! thank you for always inspiring me. love love love your dishes!!
I really like this rice! Now I finally know what was added to the rice. My classmates from Korea didn't tell me before! Your video is a lifesaver! That's great!
Love watching these videos and learning about new food ideas and recipes. Maangchi makes the videos fun and interesting. I slowly am learning where to find dry ingredients. Amazon is a good source. I don’t understand how anyone eats steaming, hot food. Anything I eat only can be mildly warm. It can be spicy hot but not temperature hot!
My mum makes a similar type of rice during special occasions if she is making traditional Bangladeshi food it's nice to see other takes on a similar dish I grew up eating.
Maangchi, thank you for sharing your passion for food with us. I have learnt how to cook without any tension or worry at home from your videos and my whole family enjoys tasty meals at our dining table now, thanks to you.. God bless you! 😘😘😘
I think I know why they asked you about the normal rice. In Malaysia, we also didnt use multi short grain rice and the rice texture are not sticky like your rice. If I wanted to make kimbap or sushi, I have to find short grain rice usually in 'sushi rice' packaging and its quite pricey compared to our rice. If I use our rice, the rice roll will not look good and it will hard to be rolled. Just for your information, maangchi ☺
Oh! I was in the grocery store earlier looking for this rice and then you posted this. Great timing! Also, I received your cookbook as a birthday gift from my sister just a few days ago. Its amazing Maangchi! I love it and will use it a lot :) thanks for the great recipes and videos!!! Love from Sweden
So yummy I am from India. But since 8 years I am working in korea research industry. Me and my husband love korean food so I learned it from your videos. I made many korean dishes at home. Thank you for such a nice video. Its healthy 전식 .

I followed your recipe and made this today! Although I forgot to buy barley when I was at the store so I just used another 1/2 cup of white rice. The only black rice I could find at my local Whole Foods was called Chinese Forbidden Rice. Maybe I should have added more than 2 tablespoons to get a darker purple. I have a lot of leftover rice now. Do you have any tips for reheating the leftovers?
Hi Maangchi! Ive been waiting so long for this recipe. But i dont think black rice is available at my local grocery store. Can i use black beans as substitutes?

The french translation on the brown sweet rice is "Rice of sweat of brown". Yum.

Amazing and simple recipe! I went to my local Korean grocery store and showed the lady the video so I can buy the brow sweet and black rice. I just made this and its amazing with some kimchi. I will say one thing I realized while watching the lunch spread. The biggest difference I see between European and Western food is we don't eat nearly as much seafood. When I was growing we would have fish only rarely, and never fish sauce or anchovies. As an adult I embraced all styles of food, especially Korean however I do not eat very much seafood and usually leave it out of recipes.
Just some thoughts... Thank You Maangchi!!!
