This was one of the few anime selections available for rent at my local Hollywood Video stores when I was a kid, so I admittedly have a soft spot for it despite the weaknesses! I remember when Tenchi In Tokyo came out on Toonami some time later, I perceived it as just being a lazy rehash of the plot from Daughter of Darkness since there's a lot of surface similarities (outsider successfully entering the harem, lonely childlike villain with sociopathic tendencies, both of those characters literally being a part of each other), but looking back this was definitely a story that made waaay more sense as a series than a single movie. What's even more puzzling to me is that looking into it again, this apparently came out *after* Tenchi in Tokyo by a good few months? within the same year of each other?? So if anything Daughter of Darkness was the lazy rehash, LOL! I never realized how short it was but in my defense I have not watched this movie in literal decades. It goes over quite well if you're eight and it's the first Tenchi related property you see! God does this bring back memories though. That Ryoko slap always stuck with me, she was my favorite as a kid so I think I felt personally offended on her behalf 😂
Completely agree! Used to rent this at the Hollywood video here in Colorado springs constantly back from 2000 - 2003. I always loved this film along with the the first one tenchi muyo in love and the original tenchi muyo series as well as tenchi universe. But I hated tenchi in Tokyo with a passion. Way too much comedy and a terrible downgrade in animation style. However, it did have a real good soundtrack just like the other entries in the franchise. Bought this in the limited edition funimation boxset from a few years ago that is sadly out of print now. Great memories of being 9 years old!
Tenchi continuity is a specific special interest of mine, so I'm always glad to hear it discussed. And it definitely was needed for the context of this film.
I know I watched this, because I love Tenchi, especially anything with Kiyone in it, but I remember very, very little about it. Kinda shows how much impact it had on me. I hope you do El-Hazard some day, which is literally my favorite anime. Okay the shot of the Nativity with the Tenchi cast made me laugh for a solid 5 minutes.
When I was a high school freshman in early 2004, I met a senior who was a T.A. to my English class. Through a common interest in animation, anime and whatnot, we quickly became best friends still to this day. At the time, my anime exposure was limited to what Toonami would air at the time and I had no collection of anime at the time. He quickly became my anime mentor, and he had a big collection of anime shows and movies that he would actually lend me on Fridays to watch over the weekend. One of those movies was Tenchi Muyo the Movie 2: Daughter of Darkness. Despite not having seen the first Tenchi OVA movie, I did watch a lot of Tenchi Muyo, Tenchi Universe, and Tenchi in Tokyo, so at least I had more than a fair amount of familiarity with the franchise. I enjoyed it, warts and all. In a way this OVA was the turning point to when I became more well-versed in anime, especially when anime like Bleach, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Inuyasha came into the picture. So like its standing in the franchise continuity, this Tenchi OVA holds a unique place in my heart.
"also, Gaggle of Alien girls?" "well how else would you call them? a pod of alien girls? a pride?" "a harem; what other way WOULD you call them?" Tenchi: "an infestation" (props on the video and props to anyone out there who got this reference)
Basically, the only thing in Tenchi Muyo that is more tangled than the Masaki Family Tree is it's continuity. Got it. (Oh wait, you mentioned that. Never mind.) Merry Christmas, KB!
Watching your video made me realize something. Tenchi's "daughter" was created, met with Tenchi, and then was killed within the span of less than a year. So although she had the physical form of a 16 year old, she was literally an infant at the time of her death, explaining her extremely childish behavior throughout the film. How many anime have murdered a baby on screen?
Wonderfully done and informative, I never knew about the light novel series. I do remember enjoying this one years ago. But then again I was easier to please back then. So maybe I'll give it a rewatch and see what happens. Anyway, it is always a pleasure seeing a new video of yours. Keep up the good work and have a Merry Christmas.
Omg and you did Daughter of Darkness. Omg so hyped xD I just started the video, but I'm already glued to the screen. I mentioned the first one having a special place in my heart, but I almost want to say this one is so much more nostalgic for me. My friend asked their dad to rent it from the adults only section of a one off, local video store so we could watch it together with my sis. It was probably the first time I ever "Did something I wasn't allowed to." I was a big goodie two-shoes as a child and I remember struggling so hard with my inner voice when it came to watching this movie. I felt so bad seeing so much naughty stuff. Heck I was 8 or 9 when I first watched this. It left some... lasting visuals seared into my brain xD Spoilers to the movie: The scene where Tenchi slaps Ryoko still makes me cry EVERY TIME! Getting teary eyed just typing this. Gah I love this anime and movie so much, even if it has not aged well. I could literally gush all day. But instead I want to thank you for coving this anime and it's movies. New to the channel and I hope you have a video on the third movie. Lord only knows it's hecking weird lol.
Ah yes, the long and complicated history of tenchi movies. Even less cannon then most of the cannon. Also as my contribution to the is it a Christmas movie debate is Gundam wing Endless waltz.
christmas specials taking place in summer got you confused? Now you can finally experience what living in the opposite hemisphere feels like, in here it's always been like this, so much so that seeing it actually depicted in media confuses us more than before
I haven't watched this film in many many years, even though I purchased it on DVD. I may now go back and revisit it. And I appreciate the education on the Hasegawa continuity....I remember reading about this years ago but I had forgotten about it. For western tench anime fans, if you see "headband" Kiyone, you usually are thinking "Universe continuity", even though this movie doesn't really fit into those stories. One of these days, I'd love to see a video about the third Tenchi movie "Tenchi Forever" or the other series for good or for ill.
I just recently found your channel and I absolutely love the videos you make. I've been getting more and more into retro anime as of the past 1 and a half-ish years in addition to my prexisting interest for anime in genral and this channel further fuels those interests for me. You make quality content and you definitely deserve more subs. Don't stop doing what you're doing. I hope your channel grows to be much larger than it is now. (Also great choice of music for the intro)
Another great espoide from you. I sorry to keep asking you this question but would you like to be on my podcast NerdTalk in the future. Thank you for your time and have a great night or day
I always assumed all the Tenchi movies took place in the same timeline as Tenchi Universe, either sometime during the events of the television series or after its events, primarily due to the presence of Kiyone, otherwise known as the best sixth ranger of Tenchi's harem as far as I'm concerned.
Look, I know this is highly subjective, so I understand if others disagree, but I HATE the dubbing for Tenchi, especially Ayeka. If they wanted a voice that sounded like snooty English royalty, couldn't they have hired some Shakespearean actress from England to do the vocals? Ugh.

Tenchi No Need for Continuity!

Tenchi Muyo was just the creators having fun and not giving a crap if it was too ridiculous.
I think the continuity is one of the reasons I sort of bounced off of Tenchi Muyo in my younger days. ... and I'm a DC Comics reader.

Good luck getting the message out there. It would really help me out.
Yes! I already got a couple of my friends to watch too.
Another great video as always, I'd love to see a review of Tenchi Muyo in Love 2: Distant Memories! Keep up the good work man

Thanks so much for this! Hoping to see some rurouni kenshin/samurai x ones as well as inuyasha, hellsing, g gundam, big o, and many others eventually.

Tenchi Muyo: the rare anime where the English dub was better written and paced than the original.

You know despite the movie not be in that great my favorite character had to be the demon girl with the big ears
You should talk about Space Runway Ideon. I think it’s really underrated, at least on the US
Super Monkey Ball 2 music LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOOO
What is that shredded anime Santa from?
feels like that episode from the powerpuff girls where they make a new 4th sister, ignoring the ecchi degeneracy lol
Hey can I ask, what is the music that starts playing at the 8:00 mark? I've been trying to find it for awhile.
Throws tantrum when plot isn't going her way? Wow, she IS an audience avatar! 😯
I mean... technically you COULD have covered Itsudatte My Santa!, but who in their right mind wants to remember THAT fucking thing again?
I liked this movie but yeah it was way too short.
Song at 8:03?
I know it's the same va but all I hear it's either Musashi or Laharl
