A year late for this reply, but it's true! In "The Icarus Factor" Kei and Yuri's name is in Japanese on the platform of the (horrible) ambujitsu ring. The Exocomp and Stubb's Egg are loosely designed after Nanmo. And the prop department made replicas of Kei and Yuri's guns, using them in several episodes. Rick Sternbach, illustrator for TNG, even auctioned off his replica of Kei's gun on eBay after TNG ended. Lucky winner.
@@inkermoy The episode with the Stratagema game had the wargames called "Operation Lovely Angel". Also, one of the final Kickstarter stretch goals for the Dirty Pair dub (original series) is an interview with Sternbach about the links between Star Trek and anime.
As for it looking awful Roger Moore.. Well when it came out, EVERY Bond movie for the last 15 odd years had been Moore Bond (and it had been about 5 since the last "good" one "For Your Eyes Only). Living Daylights came out half a year after this (and was no prize). Though it is interesting that the opening breakdown for "Through the Danger" sounds so much like "The Sun Always Shines on TV" given who did the theme to Living Daylights.. (Ah Ha). There's a reason Wattsman has those 2 long rants (and as a fan-titler, I got VERY familiar with them). The joke is, Wattsman is so far out of it, that he doesn't NOTICE that Carson and the Pair aren't part of his experiments. Even when he's tied up on the sled, he reacts to Kei and Carson like he's hosting "Mutual of Omaha". And yes, Kei and Carson doesn't ever quite work (Smith and Warren did this thing better in Biohazards, play up the lust). But you have to see him as part of the set. Kei and Yuri are the only characters in the story who AREN'T obsessing over something. Wattsman has his experiments, Urdas has their 5-year-plan, Edia just wants to get this done so he can shack up with the secretary, and Carson NEEDS to steal back what was stolen from him. He's probably a notch TOO competent, but he's the (kinda) serious thread running through the plot. The girls just want to "fix the sink" and move on (i.e. vacation somewhere nicer), he exists to give their "side" of the triangle a mock-heroic obsession. It isn't done perfectly (like I said, Kei/Carson needs more lust, less notice me senpai). But the Angels have effectively dropped into a 3-4 sided plot of obsessions, and, crazy as they are, they are the straight (wo)men. They spend the movie deflating the others (except Wattsman, who's too nuts to notice). They dump the Chief on his head, give the Chairman a shovel when he asks what they (Urdas) are going to do, listen to Carson rant of their ignorance, and then wring the plot out of him after stripping him to his boxers. It's hard to play the shonen hero in that outfit.
I have mixed feelings about this movie. One hand I find the movie really fun and entertaining but in the other hand,i'm totally agree with you about the treatment of the Lovely Angels which is just frustrating and even if I find Carson D.Carson pretty cool (it's a nice cross between Lupin the Third and Ryo Saeba) it steal too much the show of Lovely Angels and it's sad. Despite this,i personally love this movie but more like a guilty pleasure. Too bad they didn't make a second movie with the same animation style but which would better highlight the Lovely Angels but at least we have, like you said, the TV series and we also have the Flight Conspiracy OVA who as a undeniably better plot.
Some of the music I’ve listened to most. At a time period when I had no access to “soundtracks” but only what I recorded by holding my stereo up to the TV speaker. That I would carry around with me and, like, play “Over the Top” at the top of a slope in HS Ski Club, finishing off right as Wattsman screams. 😝
“I hate this movie” and are a bad man with incorrect options that are bad! … Probably helps that I didn’t even watch this dubbed or subtitled until the late-90’s, so my first decade didn’t have to listen to Carson’s actual dialogue. 😝 Plus, there’s a good difference between “shit you watched first at 14 during an 80’s/90’s era when dopey shit was common” and coming to it much later. I doubt I’d have given DP much thought at all if I came to it later, as I did with Lupin for years until Part V and TWCFM changed my stance on it. (At least latter Lupin.) However. This is still going to be the way I entice people into anything DP, so I have to disagree with your end comments. A movie is an easy sell, and a a two-cour TV show, or even a brace of disconnected OVAs, is a harder one. If someone is already 80’s TV primed, sure, but they’re likely already knowing of it or have watched, and I’ll probably try to push them to more eclectic or challenging things. The world needs more Yawara fans than Dirty Pair. 😛 And there is almost nothing that can match the 80’s anime aesthetic/experience. So even if parts are bad for the characters, it will still be the more effective primer, I think.
As someone who binged the Dirty Pair tv series and loved it a lot, then went on to the OVAs (which was quite a step down imho but still enjoyable). Was looking for more Dirty Pair to watch - Nolandia was decent, and the next was Project Eden. Truly a disappointment and I echo everything said in this video. The pair just felt off, the focus wasn't on them, the villains didn't feel threatening and the real Kei wouldn't have missed every punch in hand to hand combat. Here's hoping 005 would be a good sendoff for the original series and maybe I'll give Dirty Pair Flash a chance again.
CDC matches Kei in physicality and humor and is the only love interest that survives any of the stories. Would a brawler like Kei love a man she could wipe the floor with? CDC might be the only man in the DP universe to break the K&Y plot armor so I appreciate Project Eden going there. I find the closing scene where they are reunited to be pretty touching so the character development is screen time well spent. I agree though that this might not be the best place to start a DP journey.
That was a scathing critique. You make some valid points and Carson D. Carson is definitely not my favorite guest character in the Dirty Pair saga. That being said I still really love this anime. The music and production values pull you in and never let go. I also have a heavy nostalgia factor for this movie as I had a copy of Project Eden on a bootleg VHS way back in the 80's. I also had most of the TV series and all of the second OVA series on bootleg as well. Dirty Pair is one of my favorite 80's anime series.
The worse? I am not sure on that, that movie kick ass and had a lot of action. Yeah it was not a brain thinker movie, but it is not to set back and see Kei and Yuri blow stuff up in the movie's final moments. Was it as good as the tv show or OVA? Maybe not. But it was still a fun ride.

I 1000% agree with this. Like many, this was the first Dirty Pair I ever got my hands on, and I knew something was off about it, but as I was a teenage dingdong I didn't quite know what it was. Watching it again recently, I see it as a betrayal of pretty much everything Dirty Pair stands for and have a perma-cringe while watching it, which is a shame because the visuals and the soundtrack are still killer. Carson D. Carson can DIAF.
