  • EMERSON LAKE & PALMER
Out Of This World: Live (1970-1997) (7CD box) BMG
There is quite a live legacy, as the number of official live albums show. And while the 4 multi-disc box sets in the Official Bootleg series filled many a gap, the quality was often ropey at best. This box set is just wonderful from the moment you open it up.
Out of the box comes a booklet and five live albums in card sleeves, all gatefold, two of them double sets.
    CD1 - Isle of White Festival 1970
The first set is the band’s debut performance at the August 1970 Isle Of Wight Festival (the DVD now long out of print).
    CD2 - California Jam 1974
The second set is the band’s performance at the 1974 Californian Jam (also the source of a legendary Deep Purple performance).
    CD3 (2 discs) - Works Live 1977
The 3rd set is the double disc Works Live. Although previously released, it has been long out of print. It is the full and expanded show from which the original live set In Concert was taken.
This concert is with an orchestra and is stunning
    CD4 - Royal Albert Hall 1992
Set 4 is a nicely packaged gig at the Royal Albert Hall, 1992. Newer tracks Black Moon, Paper Blood and Romeo & Juliet sit nicely next to Tarkus, Pirates and Fanfare For The Common Man.
    CD5 (2 discs) - Union Hall Phoenix 1997 (unreleased)
The final set here is the 2CD Phoenix Arizona 1997, which showed that ELP still had a solid fanbase. The production is solid and modern,
The packaging is top-notch and there’s a colourful booklet with it too. Well worth your money, and a few hours listening too.

Nice review Phil, I'd say that if you havent got the majority of discs in this set, or if you are new to ELP, this is a fabulous set to get, as was the Fanfare box set they released a few years back and released earlier this year. Brilliant for new fans and anyone who has only previously just dipped a toe in.
If, however, like me, you are a big ELP fan, you'll probably already have everything in the set apart from the Phoenix 1997 CDs - and who'd bet against those either being released again in a couple of years time - or, because it doesnt say on their Then and Now live release where the Now came from, it could be that some of it has already been released albeit not as a full set. Now if they'd added the live in Milan and Rome vinyl as a CD to this (it was only available on vinyl in the Fanfare box set) and maybe one or two others of the live CDs in that set I'd have gone for this. So i'll just have to forego the Phoenix set and revert to my Then and Now and Once Upon a Time in South America (that has a show from Buenos Aires in 1997 as well as a couple of 1993 shos) CDs to get my fix of latter period live ELP.

They were the first rock band I got into and the effect has been lasting. Great review Phil, thanks and, in contrast to some of the live albums in the Caravan box we recently reviewed, it's great that the sound quality is up to snuff. I will be adding this to the shelves on release.

Thanks for a great review! Likewise, I cannot get enough of "Tarkus". I wish I could play it. However, the sheet music is so complex and full of so many notes, that I couldn't even sight read it in the proper time, much less play it. I saw them sadly on their final tour back in 1998. Greg Lake remains my favourite vocalist of all time.

    Great review
I was the opposite of you in the sense that I really good involved in Emerson Lake and Palmer
But my friends were in two other groups, like the purple, Led Zeppelin, etc.
But anytime I took the effort to try to get into them I was running to a wall. Yes, there were some good musicians, and some good songs.
To me, it was always the same there was just no comparison
And having seen them in concert several times it just reinforced my feeling
I seen them in Montreal in 1979
Also, in orange county and Bakersfield
And as I continue to view them still over all these years to me, there is no comparison
Keith on keyboards. Who can match him?
Call Palmer on drums Just incredible. And Greg like with his incredible vocals and melody and great bass, playing and guitar playing.
    Incredible musicians
What I seen was they were always striving to get better and better
And what I appreciated was that they encouraged other and gave each other the spotlight
Which becomes hard when groups get large
So it’s suited them very well to be a trio They all got to show off their abilities at each
    performance
I’ve seen a lot of concerts over the years lots of bands
    And many fantastic musicians
But none of it has been equal on seeing Emerson Lake and Palmer in concert live Especially in 1979 in Montreal with the orchestra
Keith Emerson performing spectacularly and so much fun to see him play the accordion
An unforgettable drum solo by Carl Palmer And his relentless drumming through the whole concert
And Graig, with his great voice and melodies and relentless bass playing

I have only just got into ELP in the last few years - was never interested when I was younger but I actually am surprised at how much I enjoy them now. And to your initial point I am in my 40s! Have you got the Fanfare boxset - good value and great package. BTW have you got the new Sepultura boxset in the background there - if so how, I thought it came out next week ?

I'm in my 50s but got into ELP as a young kid, since older family members liked them and played their albums for me. It was the same with Genesis, Yes and Supertramp.
