Wonderfully articulate review, importantly coming from a fan who has lived with these works since they were created. And you importantly mentioned that all the new work that has been done of them has been by the creator.
I purchased the Restless Heart remix on your recommendation and loved it. I will do the same for this as I'm not overly familiar with David's solo work. Keep up the great work Phil. You're passion is infectious and has reached as far down to little NZ at the bottom of the world.
Great review. The original White Snake record, just as yourself I bought this on release day and absolutely loved it. A soulful record indeed. I have no problem with these new editions promoted under the Whitesnake moniker, because after all David Coverdale is Whitesnake.
David remixed and enhanced his Restless Heart album. It was a revelation! The “new” album sounded incredible; to me it was an enormous improvement in the original.
I think Northwinds is the most mature and greatest Coverdale album; which includes Deep Purple and Whitesnake. I think this is what Coverdale should have been doing for the last 20 years. "...I even missed an empty train."
Great Review Phil! I will get this very soon off your recommendation. Only My Soul is my favorite Coverdale vocal, well actually tied with the Need Your Love So Bad version with just D.C. and Jon Lord on organ. Always enjoy your show - Cheers from Central California!
Phil, this is a very thoughtful, thorough and informative review of the new Whitesnake box set and much appreciated! David's early solo material obviously holds a special place in your heart and I think that it only makes sense that you would be the one to ask via interview or email why the decision was made to change the track listing as mentioned by you in the review. I can't imagine a better person than you to ask this question (and others) as I would assume that David would feel comfortable answering questions from such a long standing and loving fan. Thoughts...
A much appreciated, detailed, and informative review. These CD's have been rare and expensive for quite some time, so this box set is the perfect opportunity to get them in their optimal versions.. A mandatory purchase. Take care! 🎤🐍
What a nice review! Love it! Thank you! Can’t wait to receive the package. I agree with you: Blindman my favourite song. And Northwinds album. Time and again I sing his songs! ❤ Kjell Arne Sunde, Norway.
Hi Phil, thanks for going in-depth on this box set. It’s been the one I have really been waiting for! I only have the Slide.. box set. I won’t prejudge the concept of overdubbing new musicians over the likes of Micky Moody’s original guitar parts. As long as the additional guitarist isn’t adding ‘pitch squeals’ and Sykes-esque ‘wind ups’, I will remain positive overall.I would have preferred that Micky Moody got first dibs on that! I ordered the box set around two months ago but haven’t received a confirmation email to say it’s been shipped. Fingers crossed I haven’t been scammed.
Hey Phil, just wanted to say thanks for this. I love Sir David's vocals and his voice was never better than on the two early solo albums and Into The Light (which, at the time, I hoped was a return to a less strangulated style - honourable mention to Restless Heart too). I'm a similar age to yourself, so my Coverdale voyage is similar - I can forgive that voice many things (see his later career!). Thanks for the info - I'll be looking to get this one
Looks fabulous combination 💥 Into the Light was an underreated album, but it's fantastic ✨️ I already pre-ordered mine !! Coverdale, is one of my favorite singer !!
Even though I have zero interest in WS/DC your unboxing(s) are always a must-watch, only a few out there I can say that for. Thankyou for such great work on your ch, your voice is very calming. I think you deserve an interview with DC by now, good luck, I will be watching👌
Hi Phil, great review. I would be one of those people hearing the solos for the first time as I just have the whitesnake band albums. I love Blindman but never even realised it appeared on record before ready and willing so would love to hear the earlier version. Whole set sounds excellent. Might ask for this for Christmas!
Most rock stars of the classic era developed addictions to fast cars, narcotics, booze and women of easy virtue. David Coverdale, however, is a different breed. His vice is expanded boxsets, including some pretty unremarkable items from his career, such as lavish anniversary editions of the dire Slip of the Tongue, the superfluous Restless Heart and the quite good Good to be Bad albums which, however, is no towering classic in the Whitesnake canon. I am a longtime fan and bought all three. This new boxset strikes me as far more interesting as the three just mentioned before. Evan having all of his three solo albums, including the CD remasters of Whitesnake and Northwinds from the early 2000s, this is one I will be looking forward to buying as soon as possible. What an excellent and thorough review by Phil Aston - thank you!
Great review Phil. Like yourself, these albums have always had a special place in my musical heart. I really rate 'Northwinds', possibly David's most personal work and the oddly downbeat cover art has always held such appeal. Be very interested to hear the changes you mentioned.
Thanks for an enlightening and enthusiastic review! Only last year I got the Japanese cd facsimiles of the first two solo albums, which sounded really good to me but this box set seems to widen the sonic scope even more. Curious about the remixes even though I'm usually quite ambivalent to such intrusions as the trade offs aren't always worth it. Yet, I find myself enjoying for instance Pink Floyd's remix of Animals, so I'll have to get this box set eventually. 😂
For the extracting the individual instruments, there's software out there than can do this to an incredible standard already, like Steinberg Spectrasonics. For the guy playing "guitar, bass, keyboard" whose name we didn't know, it could be that he played odd notes here and there when the originals couldn't be extracted cleanly enough, or to help in transitioning as part of an edit to an arrangement. Or he could have replaced whole parts, who knows!!
The musical direction of both albums were quite a surprise at the time. After Purple I was honestly expected more of the same. They took me a while to appreciate being a little closed minded in my younger years, but the more I listened, the better they sounded. Blind Man and Only My Soul remain favourites of mine. I'm also of the opinion that the Ready an' Willing version of Blindman pales in comparison with the original version. As Jon Lord quoted, David has talent by the bucket load!
David has always said he isn't nostalgic and only ever wants to make new music and not return to those old albums. So I think we are damn lucky he has at this time in his life. Thankyou DC
I love the Northwinds album. Very relaxed and carefree but reminds me of springtime for some reason. Not bothering with this cos like you said, my memories are about the original and these sound like they have been changed too much.
Enjoyed the review Phil. Like you mentioned this set does remind me of the Black Sabbath Super Deluxe CD sets. I'm familiar with the late 70's Whitesnake albums but not David Coverdale's solo albums. I'll have a listen now. Thanks for the video! - Dylan
Hi Phil. Thanks for the warning about the price. The technology used here sounds so cutting-edge that it could put David Coverdale in the music tech history books. He and Jimmy Page are great at curating the music of their main bands. So much attention to detail. Hope the book reveals the location for the beautiful Northwinds front picture. The work on that album sounds especially enticing. Cheers!
I didn't want to watch anyone else unboxing this as it will probably ruin my experience unboxing on my channel. Yes I'm a huge fan of all his albums be deep purple onwards but yes these three are what I was most looking forward too aswell. I'm curious on your take on this though. So I'm watching 😂😂

Both his solo and the Hughes turner project tours, got some rainbow and purple stuff signed and my ticket and a photo,😂 fails to fill nothing more than small clubs and bars and David can fill stadiums, but glen s. Lice is still hitting those highs, where as David snarls and screams all of his songs and waves the mic to the crowd a lot. Even on the first song the crowd were joining in as David pointed the mic into the fans, as the tour was unfinished u less I missed it,this live show is yet to hit the vinyl, I wonder how. Much studio technology will be used to enhance the vocal on this release ,I do not mind in any way the remixes, deluxe, expanded and double gatefold vinyls but I do think that all of these releases saturate the market, making you buy the same record over and over and over, Thankyou as ever for a great informative, interesting unboxing you are my go to channel for releases like this, until the next time happy listening and if it’s too loud then you,re too old😂
Usual excellent review and pretty impressive you have the original Breakdown single. I disagree about the remixes, especially new instruments. Every artist, I'm sure, wants to redo their shit 50 years later, but they don't, coz they realize they were made at a time in their lives that informed the artwork and losing that aspect of it is just...wrong... Also, he always changes the original song orders and it kinda ruined the Slide It In box set for me. I really love his first two albums, especially Northwinds, but, for me, Into The Light is only marginally better than Restless Heart. When i heard the early solo albums were to be released in a box set, i was thrilled. I've loved the originals since i first bought them on CD in 2000. Having spent the last few days listening to this box set however, i'm not too impressed. The remasters are fine but the remixes are terrible. There are keyboard and guitar embellishments in the music that make the songs feel cluttered and some of the lyrics are different. It's like rewriting history. I would have prefered some live material but i assume there's nothing available from the northwinds tour. The demos are interesting and the whole thing is well packaged but it has left me a bit deflated, especially when some of the other box sets have included a wealth of extra material. I hope when we eventually get a Coverdale Page box set, it's better than this. I still love Whitesnake though and it's good to have these solo albums back in circulation.
Just listened to the northwinds album of this set , love your reviews , was disappointed with “only my soul “ being chopped up. It’s one of best songs on original album. You mentioned they cut Roger glovers bass out , but I don’t think he plays any bass on this album, it’s all Alan Spencer .

My problem with this box set is that it's advertised and promoted as Whitesnake in the title. These are solo albums not Whitesnake. Just to sell more boxes the lie to the people deliberately of course. If that was David's choice it's so wrong...
