Monkhouse was born on 1 June 1928 at 168 Bromley Road, Beckenham, Kent, the son of Wilfred Adrian Monkhouse (1894-1957) and Dorothy Muriel Monkhouse née Hansard (1895-1971). Monkhouse had an elder brother, John, who was born in 1922. Monkhouse's grandfather John Monkhouse (1862-1938) was a prosperous Methodist businessman who co-founded Monk and Glass, which made custard powder and jelly. In a 2015 documentary, it was revealed that Monkhouse and his older brother suffered from physical and verbal abuse by their mother.
Bob Monkhouse was educated at Goring Hall School in Worthing, Sussex, and Dulwich College in south London, from which he was expelled for climbing the clock tower.[ While still at school, Monkhouse wrote for The Beano and The Dandy and drew for other comics including Hotspur, Wizard and Adventure. He established a comics writing and art partnership with Dulwich schoolmate Denis Gifford and the two formed their own publishing company in the early 1950s. Among other writing, Monkhouse wrote more than 100 Harlem Hotspots erotic novelettes.[5]
Monkhouse completed his National Service with the Royal Air Force in 1948. He won a contract with the BBC after his unwitting RAF group captain signed a letter that Monkhouse had written telling the BBC he was a war hero and that the corporation should give him an audition.
Before establishing himself as a successful writer and comedian, Monkhouse appeared on stage in London, first as Aladdin in a stage show of the same name written by S. J. Perelman and Cole Porter and then in the first London production of the musical The Boys from Syracuse (Antipholus of Syracuse) in 1963 at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, alongside Ronnie Corbett.

20 years on from his passing, Bob is still funny to this day. He was never squeaky clean but he wasn't too rude of crude either. A comedy legend. I first saw him when he presented Family Fortunes. He was a prime example of why comedians make for the best gameshow presenters.
For years I only saw Bob as a tv presenter doing clean stuff. But when I saw him do an adult set for the first time I was gobsmacked. He truly had a stand-up quality that was the best of it's time.
👍🔝
Same here. My generation only really knew him as a gameshow host. I was pleasantly surprised when I first saw him do a routine that wasn't family friendly.
Bob was a natural. You could tell the man lived for the stage. One of the best quizmasters too. Will always be remembered
Watching this I can't believe he's gone. Thank you for showing this
Playing in a music trio I sat behind Bob on three occasions - when they closed
the clubs doors at the end of the gig the gates of HEAVEN OPENED !!!
Shear ' unadulterated ' MAGIC and you witnessed a pure (?) genius and perfectionist at work!
Bob Monkhouse was one of the greatest comedians ever. Just sharp and witty.👍👍👍
Comedy of the highest order. Absolutely brilliant.
Simply one of the best - funny as heaven and no need for explicit swearing at all ( unlike modern comics) and best bit - Bob was extremely funny.
The Joke-Master
Just Pure Class. Today’s comics are not fit to walk in his shoes
I get the impression that Jimmy Carr tries to copy the Monkhouse style but it's like Janet Street Porter trying to copy Liz Hurley.
@@SuperFerdie1965 🤣🤣👍
I worked with Bob a few times; he was a consummate professional and thanks to his obsessive nature (videos, films, scrapbooks of gags etc) could ad lib endlessly about people he had never met but knew about their occupation.
The Governor. Many people didn't realise that he was a master of standup. Rapid, fluent, witty. RIP.
I grew up thinking he was just a gameshow host; then I saw him perform a standup set on tv. It was like watching a masterclass.
King of stand up by a long shot👍 R.I.P.🙏❤️
Absolutely the Godfather
He was a comedy genius… I remember he had a notebook with years of gags stolen and he offered a reward to get it back.. sorely missed. RIP
A true legend. RIP.
Seamless story teller - a master craftsman...
As a youngster, people laughed when he said when he grows up he wants to be a comedian...... they’re not laughing now..... legend.
Downright brilliant
some modern "comics" should take a long hard look at Bob. He was never offensive and ALWAYS funny. An encyclopedic comedy knowledge.
He was the best stand up comedian i think we ever produced in my opinion
The Des O'Connor joke was delivered with brilliant precision. They half expected it but Bob knew the other half.
The best comedian Britain has ever had. Class
I think I would agree with you there but we have has some great ones over the years.
Never watched bob before but wish I had what a genius you can see where all the later successful comics got their material what a legend
'The Gag Father'
Mesmerising Monkhouse, scintillating star, greatly missed. ✝️😊✝️🕯️😅✝️
He really is so missed.
Saw Bob at Lakeside back in 90's splendid show 😂🤣😂🔝👍
To know you watched him live must be a great feeling. A True #Comedy #Legend
Bob Monkhouse bought out massive amounts of early Comedy cinema film, including Silent Movies, ALL Comedy. that is why we have access to many things like Charlie Chaplin, Fatty Arbuckle (vastly underrated) , Lareul and Hardy, Keystone Kops and many others. ALL out of HIS money.
Completely the master!!!
Great upload 👍
Thank you David 👍
Thanks for this! I was shocked to hear my home town mentioned right off the bat. I do miss his wit. Liked, loved and shared.
One of the best makes these comedians of today poor
The MASTER.
Whatever you wanted to say, your level of English prevented it.
Better known as the 'Million Joke man'...... A comic Genius.
That last joke was priceless.
I saw him at Butlins in the early 80s at Skegness brilliant stand up comedian we have a Few Wokes on Here Who find it Impossible To Have A Laugh Miserable Sods
All hail the mighty, mighty Bob Monkhouse.
The Joke Father
I'd like to die peacefully in my sleep. Like my father. Not screaming and shouting like his passengers.
The old 'uns are the best...rather like Bob Monkhouse :-)
@@djmossssomjd8496
Spot on my friend. Monkhouse was the man who devised that one! Alongside other gems like "I still have sex at 74, I live at 76, it's no distance!" My own favourite of his was "Hot weather we're having right now. It got up to 94 degrees yesterday, which at my age is not bad"! Genius.
@@SuperFerdie1965 One my favourites was My wife has to go on a diet. I took her to the opera the other night and nobody would leave until she sang.
Fantastic 😂
Bob genius stand up...and quiz show host...brilliant 👏..gazzz
One of the best comedians ever
Brilliant. Thank you.
ABSOLUTELY COMIC GENIUS! 🤣🤣🤣

Hes my number 2 comedian behind the G.O.A.T Jim Davidson RIP BOB
A touch of class... Sadly missed
One of the best Lisa.
He is extremely clever ;hilarious .. He kept that going amazing and funny .. lol
I never rated him, but have to apologize, this was funny !
Probably the best comic ever !!
The Joke Father!
Love the image of a burglar doing drive by channel changes
Great gags.
One wonderful Man.
This man was classic 👍.
Funny Guy Bob RIP Mate xxx
Some comics are timeless ❤
Bob Monkhouse is the best ❤
Absolutely 👍
Greatest comic of all time
Tommy Trinder said that Monkhouse could take a joke, and he didn't mind whose jokes he took.
Because he was a sixties comedian Bob was very underated. He was a script writer for other people.
Now i can`t get enough of him.
Bob was miles ahead of the T V companies and knew what we wanted as wiewers.
Oh i do miss his humour.
If he was still alive he would have fucked this woke lot off years ago.
Absolute genius
The Gag Father👍
The greatest of all time
A true master!
As someone has said previously - The Godfather! Thank you for your comment very much appreciated.
The old school way of learning the art from the top bill you work your way from the bottom of the bil to the top on summer seasons like the great oldies hary second .bob Bruce more come and wise Larry greaceson ect I can rember in the summer season shows for people who are not my age Google it you alway looked to see the top of the bill
Genius.
The Gag Father.
Bob and I could always see eye t eye
The Master.
Comics today please take note! and learn from the master!
Well said Niceuneaz
Interesting-- the stripper bit is a dirtied-up version of a routine Jack Benny did several times. Mr. M. was a shrewd appropriator, as well as a brilliant creator, of comedy
Absolutely A top Class Comedian who knew his art.
Bob defo liked a bit of Bill hicks
Yeah, I caught that however its hard to tell what year this is. Could be similar era, could be before...
Proof that a comedian doesn’t need to be crude to be funny.
Yes, the 'jokes' about his wife, and about Arabs, are obviously offensive now, but - amazingly - he isn't really being unkind. In a way he is showing how stupid we were about women, and sex and Arabs then (yes, OK, more stupid) than now. He is making fun of his own stupidity! John
Nice dancer btw wonder where bobs wife is now? Lol.lmao.
Of its time.
Master ad libber
The King!
So many un-PC jokes by today's imposed standards by people on the make. I found him as funny as his audience. I take no objection at jokes against us Brits either....Accept humour for what is is....laugh...life is too short.
Bob seemed very blasphemous, brilliant!
A little different from the stains of TV back in the day.
Who ever was the stripper?
a man that is sorely missed. unless you watch Jimmy Carr, in which case he's been resurrected with bolted-on bad language.
Good in small doses
Just pure smut.
Yes he had an endless amount of jokes but i just couldn't for some reason take to him at all.
I think I know what you mean sometimes he came across as 'smarmy' other times not. He was a great joke master thou!
I used to think that but, as he got older, I think he dropped much of the smarminess and became a lot funnier and likeable. Faced his cancer with admirable bravery.
I thought he was great with the public on his panel shows
And when celebrities were on his show he let them speak and enjoyed their witty retorts
Confidence isn't smug or proud it just helps you believe in yourself that's why he was great because he knew he was good
But he worked up to it over time
There are very few real comics today ...
The so called comics are limited and acts are recycled over and over....
An absolute creep
Thank you for the comment it helps with my video analytics. Clearly, your comment doesn't match other people but life would be boring if we all liked the same.
An absolute Gent.
I agree, an unctuous, slimy individual.
I never found him funny when he was alive, so, twenty years later, I thought I'd give him a fresh look; still not funny. I'd put him on a par with Jethro or Lenny Henry.
Let us know who you find funny? Would never put him on par with Lenny Henry. Totally out classed by Bob.
@@robcharlesrandoms7301 Bill Burr, Dave Chappelle, and Jim Jefferies are my favourites, but I also like Lee Mack, and Sean Lock was really funny on panel shows, but not so funny as a stand up, surprisingly. There are others, but I can't think of them off the top of my head. Oh, Billy Connolly, of course.
The greatest 😂😂
ok but hes better than this
