    Correct me if I’m wrong but I think the federation at 7:20 only needs 1 satellite.

    • @UnfussyBoardGames
      @UnfussyBoardGames  3 года назад +4

      You are right, good spot! The blue federation (not red at 7:19!) only requires the furthermost satellite. For anyone reading, the rules require that players use the minimum number of satellites.

    • @warever37
      @warever37 5 месяцев назад

      But with only 1 satellite the federation has a power value of 6. I'm not sure where the mistake is.

    • @onkelkonkel5
      @onkelkonkel5 5 месяцев назад

      @@warever37 If you check OP:S answer, my point refers to the blue faction, not the red one.

    • @warever37
      @warever37 5 месяцев назад

      @@onkelkonkel5I know. You have 1 Trading Station, 1 Research Lab, and 3 Mines for a total power of 7, but you can't connect all of them with just 1 satellite.

    This is actually one of the best board game videos I've seen in ages. It's filling a gap in the market. It's rare to find tips and strategy videos, and especially ones that are this easily understandable and edited well with relevant footage.
    A lot of these heavy euros are fantastic games but can be so hard to decipher the basic strategy. My games of this are going to be so much more rich because you've completely expanded my conception of what to think about turn to turn.

    • @UnfussyBoardGames
      @UnfussyBoardGames  2 года назад +4

      What a great comment. Thank you so much for this encouragement - it is much appreciated! Indeed, this is born out of my struggling to access heavy euros - which are my favorite type of game. I found a lot of videos to be "video presentations of the rule book", for example starting the video by listing components. I used to work in a busy board game cafe and I was forced to get to the point very quickly. I think that was a formative experience! I think it's a common misconception that players should have to figure out the basic strategy - which does not make for a fun fisrt game in my opinion. I want everyone to feel like they can win. And of course, I want to win!

    Being an "introvert" here, I love the Automa engine this game brings with it to help me hone my strategy when there is no one around to get a game going.

    Thanks for the video! My standard when-in-doubt Round 1 opening is 1 lab and 3 mines, taking either the 4 Power tech or 4 Money tech in the first round. Round 2 or 3 is usually when I built the faction's special planetary institute. Of course I always look for ways to stray from my comfort zone opening.
    In round 1 I often look for the same color planet hopefully 3 or less spaces away, and I almost always set my first mine on the adjacent easy planet. That way I am very likely to build two mines in Round 1, especially against the Automa.
    I appreciate in Gaia Project the factions have less VP based abilities except for the Gleens. I feel the designers learned from Terra Mystica to have less VP abilities, as it offers more flexibility and more fun (since VP is the end the feedback loop).

    • @UnfussyBoardGames
      @UnfussyBoardGames  3 года назад

      It is so good to have this comment on here, thank you! I think that is becoming my standard opening also: Get a lab and build two mines. It's hard not to go for either the credit tech or the power tech, as you say. I have not really played Terra Mystica but your thoughts on the change in the design are very interesting. "Player Abilities" in games would usually put me off because they are so often done badly. I would have said that they were a bad thing generally had I not seen it done well in Marco Polo and Gaia Project. Flexibility and fun is what we want in our board games!

    I am going to save this video for a few more plays down the line. I really want t the wisdom now, but I don’t want to spoil the fun of figuring out the puzzle myself. I okayed my third solo game yesterday (I’ve only played solo) and scored 151 which was my best game so far. But I played as the Firaks and their planetary institute unique ability allowed me to March down the research tracks aggressively and that really helped me. I’m still making some mistakes here and there with rules I think, but I can safely say that this game burns my brain in a way very few have. Sometimes after some extremely dense inner thought and planning my brain almost taps out because it’s got cognitive overload by the sheer processing I’m doing lol. You know I remember as a kid wanting a game that would guarantee that my fate was in my hands totally…. A game whose result would always 100% be about my own decisions and my decisions alone… and this is it. So rad. Liked and subscribed.

      loved reading this comment. In another video I said it was like how a spider can sense the slightest twang on the furthest thread of the web. The game has so much going on while at the same time (through excellent game design and iconography etc) you are just about able to keep track of everything that's going on.

    My first public comment (I think) but I was taken aback by how your enthusiasm but also your modesty shone through, like a collaborative let's try to optimise together session. Your piece at the end about why you create vids I like this was so honest that I broke my "lurk never like never sub and especially never comment" rule and broke radio silence to say thank you. I was looking for a video to help some beginners and this was perfect.
    (Btw, I think Marco Polo was great until I broke it repeatedly, ditto Marco Polo 2 and then with expansion too. Asymmetrical is so hard to pull off and only really works with experienced players who can self-balance like ancient game of Diplomacy. But TM and GP are closest to pulling it off. The only issue we have with GP is that some random boards can give a huge benefit to early pick.)

    • @UnfussyBoardGames
      @UnfussyBoardGames  2 года назад

      I am so glad you took the step to comment! This really made my day! Now... this is VERY interesting about Marco Polo. I had a lot of success with MP but I have been getting trounced at MP 2 repeatedly. I keep coming back for more beatings at that game! I want to watch YOUR video on that one :-D I was inspired to get into GP after my friends played it many, many times in lock down (sadly without me). So many repeated plays - I knew there had to be something special about this design.

    I have been reading and researching this game looking for rules, gameplay, strategies, etc and your explanations gave a lot of helpful tips! I may continue to lose each game I play (LOL) but at least I'd like to have a better understanding of *why* the other players are getting double the points I got. (* and of course improve my outcome.) Overall, games in this genre have many layers and figuring out the components ie: the research tracks, actions, structures, power rotation is key to the decision making.

      I'm not familiar with Terra Mystica but this one is a masterpiece. What I've heard is that it's got a few tweaks to improve on Terra Mystica.

    • @waltermatthewberg
      @waltermatthewberg 6 месяцев назад

      @@UnfussyBoardGames my main issue with Terra Mystica is that the board feels a little crowded with 4 people and extremely crowded with 5 people. The races that expand a lot like hobbits aren't good at all with 5 people and Chaos Magicians are excellent because they can just sit in one spot and hoard all the favor tiles for income and cult track points. Then there are the giants that are never good.

    I could misunderstand the rules, but your example of initial build of mines shows you dropping one at range of 2, not 1. I’m not certain how you could drop one there.

    • @UnfussyBoardGames
      @UnfussyBoardGames  Год назад +1

      Thanks Jim. I'm not sure to which example you are referring. You can get range 2 by spending QIC or by using a round booster right from the start. Also, you can spend your first turn getting 2 additional QIC by advancing up the navigational range track. I have a rules video for this game of which I am quite proud and this is not that video. Which is to say that rules are not the focus of this video. But still, I don't want to be confusing people and so it's good to have this comment here. Thanks.
