Look at the knuckles on his hands. Look at the thickness of the wrists and muscle patterns of the forearms. I personally would have been scared just by that.

Man so sad to see keyboard warriors hate on this legend, it's not if he can fight or not, he is one of the pioneers of the karate that we no today and for that alone, he should be highly respected. Also, if you just look at his skill, speed, stregnth, and just overall composure, he can probly take down anyone here talking trash to him! What a legend!!!

I train in Muay Thai because I believe it to be the most effective in stand up combat, BUT I love the philosophies that is taught in Karate and have all the respect in the world for the true Karate practitioners. (Not the americanized version)

Greetings friend... Glad to see you can difference the westernized sport oriented martial arts from the original ones... I only disagree with one point in your comment: "Muay Thai because I believe it to be the most effective in stand up combat"... I've been involved with different martial arts for years now, and I'm safe to say that the effectiveness of a martial art isn't on the style, rather on the practitioner... it really comes down to how you practice it, how serious and committed you are, and how mutch fun you have doing it... efficiency comes from practice and a little bit of talent. I find that there are no lesser martial arts... oh, I did Taekwondo for 6 years and I've been doing Aikido for 7 now. Cheer friend, and keep having fun ;)

I made the mistake of viewing the comments after watching this video. Why are you all arguing about MMA vs Karate and calling each other names? Personally, I do think MMA is more useful in a street fight. However, that does not mean that the video I just watched was not impressive. Look at the calluses on their knuckles and their hand speed! I hope I can throw a punch that fast at an old age. Why can't you crazy youtubers watch this and just be impressed by someone who has dedicated themselves to their art?

He seems very humble. To anyone who is trash talking here, he could probably break your arm with a blocking movement. I am sure at his level, he has also had plenty of experience with judo, ju jitsu and aikido, even if he does not show a rank in it. I don't know, maybe he does. When most mms fighters get to be his age, they will most likely be disabled.

    • @ArcticGator
      @ArcticGator 9 лет назад +10

+McDago100 In isshinryu we were always taught that the block is to be considered an attack, because even when you block an attack you are still being hit and can eventually be worn down with consecutive strikes, so the block is meant to injure the attacker as much as a kick or punch and thus punishes the attacker and damages them and discourages them from attacking.

Goju-ryu karate founder Chojun Miyagi was also a wrestler, and he learned Judo. Many of his students were all Judoka as well as Karateka, because Miyagi Sensei was chief instructor at police-academy pre-WW2 and police had to learn Judo in those days,so he taught both. One of Miyagi's Karate Students Miyazato(GojuRyu 10th Dan) was also 8th Dan Judoka and undefeated All Okinawa Judo Champion in his youth. Judo/Jujitsu including ground-fighting was part of Japanese school PE syllabus back in the day(still is in many schools) so many old karate senseis knew judo. Both karate Senseis here held Dan grades in Judo in their youth. They're way past 70 now. So,to all who think they know something called MMA and so they brag on internet about beating up these two masters-better men than you have tried years ago and failed tragically.Go get a life.

  • @henrythinks

He was my teacher many years ago in Okinawa when I was in the Marines. Let me tell you he was unbelievably fast. You who think using him for target practice would make you a winner? Really have no clue. American Karate is by these old masters standards a joke. I've seen this man dodge spears, arrows and I have little doubt should you bring a gun to a fight with him. Make sure you have your affairs in order first cause I'm thinking you have at best only a 40% chance of leaving upright.

Henry I cannot agree with you more. I have also trained with a head of style Shihan, and he was 65 or so at the time. Mind blowing speed, focus and skill. The kind of guy that could kill a normal man with one punch. Point a gun at him, I suspect that you would wake up in hospital with no teeth, and a metal jaw implant resembling a fire-arm.

I agree since most people have no idea that a martial art of this type can easily kill or disable with 1 or 2 blows at the most. It is very likely that such a fight would be over in seconds. Master Higaonna is obviously in fantastic shape and can take a blow as well if he needs to.

This apprentice of Mr. Kimbo, did he fight Morio-sensei?

Kinda remind me of my old time karate practice. Respect for Mr. Higaonna. And for those who wonder what is that technique displayed in the end of the video, it is a hard-side of Goju-Ryu technique (Goju-ryu has hard and soft technique), it is called sancin. Basically you regulate and train your breath so that it will affect your body to be as hard as it can. I remembered the first time my sensei taught me this technique, he actually kick me in the back and the stomach, and I didn't feel a thing. Practiced this for a 3 minutes but I sweat like I jog for an hour.

It's an honor to see Higaonna Sensei doing a Gekisai Bunkai on the first and second video, and in the end, watching him testing his partner doing a Sanchin kata is absolutely amazing, knowing that sanchin is absolutely hard to master, even for a 3rd kyu like me.

its a kata, called sanchin. it is a internal kata used for control and conditioning of breath and body. The reason for the noise sounding like a velociraptor is because to do the kata correctly you need to exhale all the air from your lungs.

Karate has gotten a bad reputation in the west because of all the terrible teachers out there. It's such a shame. When you see a true master of his craft Karate has such energy, it's incredibly.
Also I get the distinct feeling that a lot of gym martial artists don't get the idea behind the -do part in karate-do. It's a way of life. As corny as that may sound you must first and foremost conquer yourself. We don't live in a world where martial arts have any practical applications unless that application is becoming a better person. It doesn't matter if someone could defeat this man with grappling techniques. The person going in with the mindset of winning has already lost because life isn't as simple as winning and losing in a martial arts competition. I see martial arts as a way of life and not as a playground fight.

How is sanchin-dachi creepy? the stance and breathing itself is to develop rock hard tension so you cannot be just punched easily to the ground. An example each time at the end of his powerful breathing the sensei is to hit the areas that breathing is to protect.
Hitting someone in full sanchin-dachi (which in a fight happens like a reflex action for the fighter) is like hitting a small brick wall.

Hyperbole like "the most dangerous man in Japan in a real fight" is the sort of thing that has brought karate into such disrepute. I doubt, even at the height of his powers, if Higaonna was even the most dangerous man in his own town, much less the entire nation, and fight science has moved on a million miles since the development of Goju Ryu, a style largely calcified in the methodology of the 19th century. That said, it's not that I disrespect him. I'm sure that against one or even two drunken brawlers in the 1960s, he would have dispatched them quite handily. I just wish that karate people would stop this worship and deification of their masters, and its dewy eyed faith in the lethality of their art.

+Spiritu Sancti Kung fu is on a different level than cage fighting huh? You realise cage fighting includes karate right? That aswell as the best parts of every martial art represented and trained by the professional fighters, as long as they are allowed in competition.
Vale tudo in brasil has no gloves and pretty much any strike accepted, yet you don't see them doing those big motion blocks jumping to the exposed flank and attack him before he he able to retract his hand. Strange huh? Almost as if the opponent doesn't leave his hand hanging, most of these counter-techniques aren't as practical as the moves we see in cage fighting... And cage fighters do know how to eye gauge and punch a guy in the groin, just because it isn't allowed in competition doesn't mean they don't know about it. ^^
