Great version. As you can hear, Robert had recovered a lot of his "big voice" back by 1979. Here he's singing better than 1975 or 1977. This was about 13-14 months before Bonham died, and their first large show in several years. There was reason to be hopeful about their future from a performance point of view, dependencies aside.
Love this song! I have say, however, now that l'm an old lady,😁, l really love and appreciate the Celebration Day performance... can't wait for you to see it! ❤️
This was 2 years after Robert's son died while he was on tour in the USA. Only John Bonham attended the funeral. At that time Robert nearly left the band. John Bonham persuaded him to stay. At this (Knebworth) stage he would also have been aware of Jimmy Page's heroin problem and John Bonham's alcohol problem. Life events change people, but he has said this is his favourite LZ song, so I don't think he's not feeling it.
On stage in Knebworth the band was in top form (all or nothing in front of the local audience), although the band members no longer functioned equally on the last two albums. Certainly the best instrumentally balanced version, I will compare it again this evening to the bootleg (not the best quality) of the last concert I attended in 1980 (JP+RP aside). When I close my eyes, all I can hear after 20 times is this monotonous riff... it was never my song, but in this version the transitions come into their own better and the voice is more bluesy, both of which are the saviors of the song. Have fun with all kinds of good music!!!
This is my favorite version ever. Everyone concentrates on the other things but hands down my favorite. Jimmy's guitar work can be heard whereas in 2007 I just heard other parts. And Bonham was a monster
I don’t think its on purpose, atleast not for me, can’t speak for everyone else, but you know seeing robert like that, you can’t help but ask yourself questions and wonder what happened around this time. But like i said it doesn’t take away from the performance to me, its still stellar, its just something alarming to see for any fan.
@@davidadams5280 replying to your statement regarding how to you it seems that people tend to concentrate on the wrong things when watching this performance (not sure if you meant robert or jimmy) and im just saying that as someone who just watched this performance with no prior knowledge about it or what happened, i don’t think its on purpose, when seeing robert’s mannerisms and energy you can’t help but question what happened and what went down around this time, its just a natural thought proccess you have while watching, but like i said it doesn’t take away from the performance , its still brilliant, its just something that you can’t help but be alarmed by. I'm glad u noted the apparent joy all members seemed to have while on stage here. And yes, esp. Bonzo. Those lights WERE city lights, in that the crowd was like a city, at 100k at least, I believe, lol. All those lighters! (Back when many carried them!) great reaction to an unforgettable performance.
Sorry for all the comments but Kashmir is my favorite LZ song. The band loved Kashmir and wanted to be remembered for it rather than Stairway. It’s a true masterpiece. Jimmy and Robert have called it the quintessential Led Zeppelin song. The next one is in 2007, at the O2 Arena in London. Tribute to Ahmet Ertegun the founder of Atlantic Records, who gave LZ their contract. He had died at a Rolling Stones concert after falling and hitting his head. Many of the bands he signed gave tributes to him. Robert is 59, JPJ 61, Jimmy 63. They still bring it. You should give yourself a treat and watch the entire Celebration Day Concert. Led Zeppelin showed why they are the best Rock band ever. ❤
Jason was great at the O2. But watching John Bonham here and comparing it to a near perfect Jason at the O2 just shows how far above Jason his father was. Bonzo was in his own class.
@@tektoniks_architects absolutely! Nobody comes close to Bonzo. However, I think Jason did his father proud. Plus, he helped the original band mates remember all the different ways they played a song, how they transitioned. Robert, Jimmy, and JPJ have all said he was incredibly important. I wouldn’t want to see anyone else in Bonzo’s seat than his son Jason.
Jason was great at the O2, for sure. My favorite drummer post Bonham, however, was Michael Lee. Saw Michael twice with Page and Plant, and he was as close to Bonham as I've heard, playing Zep content.
There was a lot riding on this performance; as others have mentioned, there was a lot of tragedy and other difficulties going on by this point. They were nearing the 80s - a new decade - one with new musical directions like punk, new wave, etc. So in addition to their personal trials, they had to prove they still had it, they could still pull it off. They were also considered "old men" for the rock scene - Jimmy at the oldest was 35 and Robert at the youngest was about to turn 31, so they had to prove their musical voice was still relevant and something people still wanted to see/hear. A lot of their family members were there, including Jimmy's dad, to help see them through. Robert is definitely channeling some Elvis in his vocal delivery (one of his childhood heroes). If you notice, Jimmy is using his Danelectro for this instead of his Gibson like at Earls Court and that's because the Danelectro was tuned for White Summer/Black Mountainside which he played immediately before it segued directly into Kashmir using the same tuning. If you notice on Jonesy's organ, there's a telephone. Why? No reason; according to Jones "Well, it served no purpose really. It just was put there sometime during rehearsals and soundcheck and just became stuck there and became sort of glued to the set. I really don't know why it just sort of never got moved." Even with all the stuff going on in their private lives, they gave their all.
There was a DVD that came out at the same time as How The West Was Won. And I have that, as well as the Bootleg DVD of this show. So I've seen this performance many times. For me it's very Shakespearean. We know all too well what will happen not too long after this performance, but they don't. And the signs are all there. But that might be from declaring Led Zeppelin my favorite band since I was 10 when Led Zeppelin I came out. If you can put everything aside while watching the whole show and pay attention to what you are experiencing at the moment with no expectations or notions you may be able to see the tragic story unfold. I guarantee it's a lot more entertaining than Richard III. It will be so evident especially if you first watch the Earl's Court show before. Earl's Court is so triumphant and buoyant. And it lets you in on all the in jokes, the sex and swagger. They crossed the Rubicon to adoring fans that wouldn't let them leave the stage. They were on top of their game and they knew it. And they nailed it. One thing you should know about a Led Zeppelin concert. They were long. Most of them around 3 hours. But the Earl's Court show at least one of the performances was almost 4 hours long. Earl's Court was actually 5 concerts that took place from May 17 1975 - May 25 1975. Jimmy was talking to George Harrison he wanted to come see them. Jimmy said great no problem, we'll get you in. What do you want to come during our intermission? George said, you guys have an intermission? Well yeah our concerts are around 3 hours long. George was shocked. We only played for 20 minutes. The whole point being due to the fact the concerts were so long there is so much to sink your teeth into. There is a lot of time to tell a story.
Robert plant didn't seem into it to you because that part of the song was somber then when the song kicked into high gear is when Plant got into it! Robert plant and the other band members know when to start to kick into high gear!
I have always thought the same. It’s his eyes. 1979 was a rough year. His son died in ‘77, Jimmy was at the height of his h*^%n addiction. Bonzo was drinking way too much. There were two camps almost. JPJ and Robert, Bonzo and Jimmy. They were pulling it all back together when Bonzo died.
