I grew up in East Tennessee. I live in Western NC, now. It's horrible 😢. I've given $ and volunteered. This storm is unprecedented. We don't have massive floods in the mountains. Well, we just did. Franklin Graham's Samaritan's Purse is already there. That's where I gave $ to and volunteered with. Choppers have been flying from here to Boone and Asheville, delivering supplies. Please give $$ to help. We weren't prepared for this and the dams overflowing and collapsing. We need your prayers, too! I just got power on today but MANY have no power and/or no homes, clothing, possessions, etc. But, we're Americans and Mountain Strong! We WILL bounce back but we need our fellow Americans help at this time.❤

Some of these communities could be greatly helped out by the US military. I have seen a lot of small bridges destroyed that the military could supply a temporary bridge and have it installed in literally a matter of minutes. I served in a Combat Heavy Engineer Battalion in the US Army while deployed in South Korea and in addition to temporary airfield installations we did temporary bridges. If the government could "loan" several M60 Armored Vehicle-Launched Bridge (AVLB) platforms it would allow access for some of these towns that are cut off. Even the tried and true temporary Bailey bridges.

The NWS likes to use the terms "100 year", "500 year" flood, etc. to describe the level of a flood disaster. I would personally classify the western NC floods as a 1000 year flood at the very least. I've NEVER seen such catastrophic flooding on such a massive and destructive scale as this where entire towns and hundreds of people have been wiped off the map. And I've lived to see the '93 Mississippi floods and the '94 Georgia floods.

I know this is all terrible and heartbreaking, but at the end of the day, it’s all just stuff. Anyone who got out alive should count themselves lucky, because you can’t replace a life. Rest in peace to those who did not make it and my thoughts and prayers go out to their families and friends.

they released water from the dam, causing the sudden surge of water to the river system to protect the dam and sacrifice some. Unfortunately. The Swannanoa river that Travers across the community, especially along the Biltmore village, is shallow and overflows often during heavy rain, needs a government attention to develop the river side, and build flood controls along the bank. I often drive in that area and, at the back of my mind, always hope that the local government will create a walkway boulevard where the public will walk, run exercise, and have fun. Enjoying the running water hush plus the fresh air. It will be an added attraction to the Biltmore village. God bless Asheville and other cities affected by Helene.

Well, let's THINK for a second. You either release water to try and keep the dam from breaching or you don't and watch the entire lake let go when the dam collapses.
