You are the born explainer. I've been a teacher at technical school these last 25 years and I am not sure at all if I can match your abilities to break down tedhnical processes in an easy understandable manner. Love your big mock-up knives and the "write your name" analogy.
10:19 Wow this tilting of the paper was done perfectly to show how geometrically this smaller angle is created! I never even thought of this but now it's crystal clear.
4:20 it's so awesome how many times I have seen these kind of "mock-knives" in your videos! And you even invested the effort of painting the handle red! I love every single bit of it! :D
Thanks Felix. You are right. I hardly ever use my small blades. I have stropped those blades, but don’t open them much. They are probably hair popping sharp. That will now change. 🔪🎸
If you use the small blade, you’ll automatically be doing Tip No. 1, cutting close to the ricasso, because the small blade is shorter, so you can’t cut as far toward the tip as you can with the large blade. By the way, I bought your “Bushcrafting Projects” book, and I like it.
Felix, great tips as Always! The shoving Slicing motion also applies to using a machete as well. A few years ago I handed my nephew a machat hunting camp and asked him to cut some brush. A few minutes later returned saying that the blade was too dull to work. Knowing that was not true, I walked over to a small sapling and cut it into with one casual swing. His mouth dropped open! He had been unsuccessfully hacking much smaller branches with the blade hitting at 90 degrees and no slicing motion. I showed him how to hit the branches he wanted to cut at about a 30 to 40 degree angle, similar to the angle one would use to whittle a piece off the limb. Then I explained that he needed to swing the blade so that it also hit the item he wanted to cut with a little bit of a slicing action that draged a bit of the blade over the surface to be cut. He had much better results after that and a little practice. I have seen others do the and thing ABC excert a lot of energy to cut just a few branches. Once you get your technique down, the machete does much of the cutting using just is own weight, you just have to steer it. I'll keep your lessons from this video in mind while carving and when teaching others to use a machete. BTW, I've heard other bushcrafters referring to the area between your torso and your knees as The Triangle of Death!
👉🏻 hellooo Felix! Stupid RUclips stopped recommending you, so I haven’t seen you in a while. I know most of what you showed, but I remember when you talked about the slicing motion. I’m used to using tools, and I have to admit, I looked at carving like using a chisel, which doesn’t slide as it cuts. When you pointed out that a slicing action is more efficient, it totally made sense. Have a great week!
Felix I already use that techniques I developed it to suit me I always remember air not meat when carving meat being part your body better cut air not meat but I know you teach kids carving hope they wear hand protection I use catering cut proof gloves from amazon very cheap and comfortable highly recommended I also keep handy basic first aid tin but I find if you has something you never need it like umbrella you take it you get no rain if you forget it you get wet I been a subscriber for quite long time now I also teach carving with my barlow pocket knife or swiss army knife I collect barlow pocket knives for nostalgia and love them very strong work horses invented in Sheffield UK around 1600 much obliged for sharing exellent video 🇬🇧👍🐾🦊🇨🇭
Hallo Felix, vielen Dank für den tollen Schnitzkurs in der Rhön (manches im Video kommt mir recht bekannt vor 😉) und viele Grüße an den sympathischen Schweizer Hugo Fleischkäs! Gruß Ivo
Oh Great One, I carry a Swiss Army Knife. BUT, I also carry a "whittling" or "carving" knife by Old Timer with six specialty blades for more intricate cuts.
Thank you for sharing these tips. It’s always handy to be reminded of good carving techniques. You’ve inspired me to make my own big wooden Swiss Army Knife. I’ve seen you use a couple of different ones now. They’re really cool.😊
Thanks Felix. Great explanations as always. I have not done much whittling/carving since I was a kid. Your videos make me want to try again. I must rewatch your 10 minute spoon carving challenge again!
Hoi Felix! Super Video!
I love wood carving, Felix, so these new tips are going to be wonderful. I keep 3 separate Playlists of which 'Tips & Tricks' is very popular among my family. A *Big* thank you - and *hugs* Wendi 🌻 PS. I recently bought an excellent vintage set of wood carving instruments. In their own specially made box they are a joy. And so are you! 😊
@@FelixImmler no need to apologize - you easily have some of the best content on the internet. And, while a tiny thing like that might amuse me a little, it is also not a flaw in an otherwise perfect video. It is rather a testament to the extremely high quality of your video production skills 💜
Hello Felix! Another great video. You do an excellent job in explaining the techniques. Thank you for making these informative videos and sharing with the community. I loom forward to the next video. Have a good week.
10:20 I make the distinction between a slicing cut and a skewed cut, the second position is skewed, where the first could be a push cut or a slicing cut.. Both slicing and skewed will boost cutting compared to a square push cut.
Happy Friday Maestro Felix, thank you for the new video of excellent practical tips on carving & whittling with SAK's. I don't do much carving & whittling with my SAK's and mostly I use the small blade to open clam shell packs. All the best, Steve in Tel Aviv.
When I was a kid I started carving with a Swiss knife. I carved for a few years and sold a lot of pieces. The best advise I ever got was from an old carver who laughed at me and told me about the virtues of carbon steel.
I always enjoy your videos, usually they're fun projects for me to try. This video changed my life, though. Well, my carving life anyway haha. Such good tips and as always, quality instructions and examples. Such a fantastic channel!
This man is a world wide treasure, we must protect him at all cost
Thank you very much for your support!
Agreed!! He is the best!!
I totally agree. I found him yesterday in my search of "Is a swiss army knife even useful" and his knowledge is impeccable.
Totally agree. Let's put him on the UNESCO Wolds Heritage List.
@victorinox, this is the worlds greatest brand ambassador!

I love to whittle. And with a Victorynox you can go out and chill when carving. The blade, the saw, the file and reamer awl I use a lot.
When I was a kid I started carving with a Swiss knife. I carved for a few years and sold a lot of pieces. The best advise I ever got was from an old carver who laughed at me and told me about the virtues of carbon steel.
