I pick up the boat this weekend and will be motoring (mast is down) from Longboat Key, south to that very same boatyard! I'm not looking forward to that lock, but I draw 5ft not 6. Haha! Hello, I'm an electrician by trade and I had a thought on your cooling fans. I believe they would only need to run when the fridge is cycling, because there's no heat being exchanged unless it's running. Like you said your fans pull very little power, but you might save power and extend their life if you can wire them up to run when the fridge cycles. Maybe use the power to the fridge cooling fan to switch a relay to turn your fans on? Just a thought. Love your channel!
From an electrical engineer, I completely agree. You should be able to tap into the frig controls to drive a relay for the fans, even better would be to include variable tstat control to only run when temp calls for fans to cool the compartment. Also, look into quiet 12v fans, they are a little more expensive, but much better for your application.

Regarding those fans, I have a couple of ideas for you guys. 1. get an inline resister to slow the fans down to about half, making them quieter and draw less power. You should still be moving enough air to keep the fridge compressor cool. 2. When you get somewhere with availability, purchase PC fans that run slowly, but move a large volume of air, therefore keeping your airflow, but reducing the noise. I cam across those types of fans with my last server build. I have a server that sits in a living space and is so quiet that you can barely hear it due to these types of fans. Excellent video, I really enjoyed watching it.
Agreed, you could find drop in replacement computer fans that would be much quieter and move the same amount of air. The Arctic fans have a pretty good price/performance ratio. There is also probably somewhere on the compressor you could power those fans from as well.
Use a variable speed control switch on the computer fans you installed. That’s what we did. That way you can adjust the speed down (noise) to something that is not so noisy. Also, the warm air off the fridge blows into our wet locker to help dry out wet things.
Hi, enjoyed this video, keep them coming! We are installing this same exact refrigerator in our SeaPiper boats. This particular C130 Elegance model has been prepared for installing an Isotherm Smart Energy Control (ISEC) module, p/n SED00033AA, which effectively makes the (Danfoss) compressor run at variable speed. It will increase compressor rpm when there is excess power available (=when voltage is high enough to be charging the batteries). Their control algorithm is said to reduce the fridge's interior temperature as much as possible, making use of the contents' thermal mass to store cold energy, while an additional temperature sensor is added to prevent freezing the fridge contents. Isotherm claims 30-50% energy savings in typical cruise settings which seems high (I never verified it) but even half that savings make it worth installing it in my opinion. Cheers!
Remake the lid from the old icebox out of a piece of butcher block so it nests in the opening. Make it flush with the counter top. And now you have a removable cutting board. Comes out to clean, and doesn't slide around when the boat rocks around.
Next time you are on the hard, you might consider pulling the new fridge out and coating all of that wood with a couple of coats of epoxy. If any of the wood under the new floor is still wet, you can give it the opportunity to fully dry before coating with epoxy. That might prolong the life of the wood and deter further rotting.
Actually what I was going to suggest there will be water dripping onto the new floor even it it is marine plywood not good. Alternatively since they will be in hot weather all the time and there is a lot of ventilation it should dry out pretty quick.
The12v DC compressor is being operated by a circuit panel which will vary the compressor speed, hence the 4.5 amp draw. These compressors will run from 4-7amp draws depending on load. Most of these control panels have an outlet for the brushless DC fans, which would have them cycle along with the compressor. Ask the manufacturer which posts are designated for these and NEXT time you pull it out wire your exhaust fans to the control board. Now you need an internal light wired to an alarm for the late evening stares into the belly of the beast thinking "I'm sure I put more beer in here"
In an RV, the refrigerator for most units have optional fans like yours that are controlled by a pre-set temperature thermostat and cycle on and off as heat around the unit calls for it. Great video...
At 37c I'd be trying to fit in that fridge... Ex computer repairer guy here. You can get ultra quiet fans. Also get ball bearing fans as they will last for years without turning noisy. Enjoy the video's. Be safe and happy guys.

G/day....1st , at least your not pulling the GALLEY apart...& 2nd I've used a similar fridge/freezer for the past 10 years & l wired in a 5 1/2" fan at the base of the fridge & with the front side edge sealed 360° , the air can only flow up over the condenser at the rear & out a vent at the front , above the fridge....it's only activated when the motor runs......PERFECT....still going strong.....cheers
Rub your hand on all the exposed surfaces of the evaporator to make sure they are all covered with a thin film of frost. Also wet your finger and touch the evaporator in a few places to see if your finger sticks like a tongue on a flagpole in winter. this will tell you if its fully charged. Discharge line temp from compressor should be to hot to hold your finger on it. Suction line should almost be sweating cool right to the compressor. Get used to touching these pipes with your hand to get to know what its supposed to feel like when running normal ! Cheers
regarding these cooling fans you may want to get higher quality fans from Noctua which will move more air with less power and most importantly less noise. They cost a bit more but if the sounds bothers you they will be worth the price.
Hi Adam. You might already have this down pat, but I recall being shown by my dad to adjust the circular saw blade depth so that the blade's teeth only barely make it through to the other side. This way, the teeth are cutting at a very shallow angle to the underside, which avoids chipping along the cut. :-)
I use 6 mm tinned twin for my 12 and 24 volts wiring with the proper low voltage plugs and sockets--and I solder all connections except those to the plugs and sockets. I also use AC fans which are QUIET run through small inverters, and I use relays wired with the refrigerator motor. No motor, no fans. All of my on-board fans are AC fans--I run a separate AC wiring with domestic outlets throughout the boat and power it through an inverter when at sea, and shore power when ashore. If one wishes to use hair dryers or vacuum cleaners aboard, you will need a 2 kva inverter. For fans alone you only need about 500 kva tops.
Keeping the top opening fridge would have given you a 50-70% efficiency saving over opening a door that lets the cold air fall out. I'll be facing the same issue when the Engel dies in my Tayana Pilothouse and plan on installing a cool blue at that point. No one right way so thought you may be interested in other approaches.
Switch those fans out for some Noctua's when you get a chance; they run silent. You guys also might want to consider adding a 12V 4 Wire PWM PC Case CPU Fan Thermostat Speed Controller with Sensor controller board ($5 on Amazon). The controller will auto adjust fan speed with temperature. I have been running this combo non stop on a piece of electronic equipment for 3 years with no issues.
Seems like everyone is jumping on the compressor on - fans on bandwagon; if you head down that route i suppose a delay-off pcb might be of use to run the fans for 5-10min after the compressor kicks off... we all know what ideas are like ...everyone has one - lol

When are you going to head across the Atlantic again? You seem to have the boat in good shape now. You should take us through the progress of your phase 1 and phase 2 progress. I also just watched your recent Q&A and as a retired aerospace engineer I loved your formula behind the reason to reef early. I learned something as I never appreciated that the wind velocity was squared.
Does it have a locking door? If not you'll need to come up with some kind of lock... I drive a semi truck and have a Fred's about twice as big as that and I chose to use heavy-duty velcro strips as my door lock because things will hit the door and make it Fly open
On the old inbuilt fridge did you have plastic curtains over the door opening? And was the thermostat for the holding plate reading the plate or compartment temp?
If the startup surge draw becomes a problem, try soft start, basically capacitors to compensate for surge. Also, you may want to seriously consider epoxy coating the floor on all side to keep rot away
Rather than running the vent fans constantly, you might want to think about having them kick on when the compressor kicks on. You'll get the efficiency you rightly want from the compressor but not lose efficiency by bathing the outside of your fridge constantly in fresh warm Caribbean air.
bloody hell - how'd they get so much foam in there?! it's like that space was the seafaring equivalent of the Tardis or Mary Poppins' carpet bag. Re: those exhaust fans - the "jaycar silent hydrodynamic fan" name is not a lie, they're cheap, silent, good flow at low watts - I've had a bunch running 24/7 for 4 years now. Jaycar gives the specs so you could find the equivalent fan that they've relabeled. They could be run as slaves switched by the fridge's built-in fan. (Though if there is any warranty on it, maybe use an inline connector so the wiring isn't altered). An alternative to a switch would be putting an NTC thermistor inline with the exhaust fan power to ramp fan speed with the condenser coil temperature. Looking forward to the next episode, I"m off to find banana bread.

Regarding the noise of those computer fans, I couldn't see what size the computer fans were, but larger computer fans are quieter than smaller computer fans.

Guess I'm confused. Not sure why your oscillating tool didn't make short work of that old fridge. Where you were using a hammer and chisel there are cutters that should blow through that foam, glue, screws and all. Anyway, I give you credit for tackling this job. I'm sure you were bummed to find more work with every piece you pulled out. Rotten waterlogged foam and old ply. Yuck!
A thought....(meaning you can tell me to f right off if you don;t like it.. ;) ) (it's a joke..) .. it wouldn't take much to put a thermostatic control, multi-speed fan controller in there... ;) Fans would only run as hard as needed to maintain best temp for fridge.. and only when the temp does jump up as a result of compressor operations... cheers.

You can wire the 2 added fans in series (6v at each connectors) and have still enough air for cooling the fridge and lot less noise

You can connect external fan to the compressor controller terminals F+ F-, if the total fan current is not more than 0.6A.

Rather than running the vent fans constantly, you might want to think about having them kick on when the compressor kicks on. You'll get the efficiency you rightly want from the compressor but not lose efficiency by bathing the outside of your fridge constantly in fresh warm Caribbean air.

bloody hell - how'd they get so much foam in there?! it's like that space was the seafaring equivalent of the Tardis or Mary Poppins' carpet bag. Re: those exhaust fans - the "jaycar silent hydrodynamic fan" name is not a lie, they're cheap, silent, good flow at low watts - I've had a bunch running 24/7 for 4 years now. Jaycar gives the specs so you could find the equivalent fan that they've relabeled. They could be run as slaves switched by the fridge's built-in fan. (Though if there is any warranty on it, maybe use an inline connector so the wiring isn't altered). An alternative to a switch would be putting an NTC thermistor inline with the exhaust fan power to ramp fan speed with the condenser coil temperature.

Regarding the noise of those computer fans, I couldn't see what size the computer fans were, but larger computer fans are quieter than smaller computer fans.

Guess I'm confused. Not sure why your oscillating tool didn't make short work of that old fridge. Where you were using a hammer and chisel there are cutters that should blow through that foam, glue, screws and all. Anyway, I give you credit for tackling this job. I'm sure you were bummed to find more work with every piece you pulled out. Rotten waterlogged foam and old ply. Yuck!

A thought....(meaning you can tell me to f right off if you don;t like it.. ;) ) (it's a joke..) .. it wouldn't take much to put a thermostatic control, multi-speed fan controller in there... ;) Fans would only run as hard as needed to maintain best temp for fridge.. and only when the temp does jump up as a result of compressor operations... cheers.
You should look at Noctura fans, they also have step down adaptors (could probs bodge one up) noctua.at/en/na-src10 I am not an affiliate just like the products and think something like that would be good for you
