    She does use effects, BUT she doesn’t use any sort of “Pitch Shifter” (to lower tonality) nor does she use Any sort of “Distortion” (to make her voice sound harsher). None of the truly good metal Vocalists use either of the above to raise the quality of the vocalist. They use effects to add dynamics to the sounds, that’s it.

      Eugene answered this a while back. they use distortion in the studio on her voice to smooth it out but not live. they use a delay in studio and live also. she also does use the dredded mic cupping live as a tool to go lower. she just did an interview saying so. she does not use pitch correction or auto tune crap. in studio if you f up just do a retake. and live it is different depending on how she feels.

    • @trippstephens6934
      @trippstephens6934 3 года назад +13

      @@williamcody3415 yeah, I saw her interview recently. She doesn’t really do a whole lot of mic cupping during their live shows, the only time I noticed her doing that was toward the end of the set because she (and I along with everyone else) are wore the fuck out.
      I didn’t see the interview with Eugene, but I’ve seen them live a few times; they’re pretty damn close to the album sound (as much as any band is really).

Holding the mic the way she does is not cupping. : )

    Breath of fresh air for the Metal scene, lets all face it, we all were getting a bit stale and crusty, just like my 54 year old bones. Been over a decade, since some forward thinking musicians like Jinjer, and other bands who have been doing the underground slog, have finally transformed, and even transcended our favourite music genre. Jinjer are so tight musically, and so talented to be able to switch genres multiple times during a song, they blow me away. Tatiana will inspire so many vocalists, to try and compete at her level, but so will all the other members of the band. Thank you, for your breakdown of this song, and how much you have grown as a Metal connoisseur.

  • @MattMcloughlin
    @MattMcloughlin 3 года назад +54

    It's not really any sort of harmonizer or plugin adding to her voice beyond the "standard" echo, reverb, and EQ etc that you do in the mixing process, all the harmonies are separate and they're just layered in the session. The growls are layered (low, mids, and highs usually), there's definitely some doubling, vocal harmonies etc at various points, but they're just punched in during recording like you would any kind of overdub.
    There's minimum 6 vocal tracks going on here for sure, a main vocal track, a main double, a harmony track, growl low, growl mid, gang vocals, perhaps the growls get doubled too to make them extra big and so you can pan them for some of that wide thickness, and possibly a seventh for the clean passage where the vocals drop in dynamics and a lot of the reverb etc seems to drop with it, but that could be done with automation too.
    So yeah there's studio magic going on, but not in terms of FX and plugins, more-so excellent mixing and layering skills with excellent source recordings from Tati and the instrumentation! Live she basically has to pick which vocal parts she's going to do since obviously she can't growl and clean sing at the same time, so like on the "mercy, mercy, merciful" line, the first two words are mid-growls, but merciful is layered clean with a growl, which you can do in studio, but live she growls all three words since her voice is sat in that range and she won't have to flip out of it for one word, only to drop back into growls on the next line.

    • @cyberia55
      @cyberia55 3 года назад +2

      I don’t think he said she USED a harmonizer. I believe he said that in that one section of the chorus, she COULD HAVE used one; that doing so would have made it sound more full.

It is also very common for harsh vocalists to double or even sometimes triple layer their tracks, for body and punch, and they typically use those same tracks for live performances as part of the backing tracks/effects. There is postproduction in this video, you can hear it in the "merciful" part, there are two voices, one growling and other singing at the same time, probably from both sessions, there is also a part were the crowd growls, probably is from one of the shows, but its amplified and cleaned.
    There are a couple of pure live sessions, for example the full show on melbourne.

    My favorite Jinjer song as a huge fan. This slow bridge is my favorite musical moment with infamous Rosetta Stoned bridge. When i hear both, instant goosebumps. AND i heard them a lot lol. Nice reaction as always :)

      Also they use effects and this is pretty post produced song. Of course the live performance will be different as vocals(i saw them live last year) but it does not take away from the experience. There is no cheating in their music. Their live is as good as their recordings, different but beautiful in their own sense. I don't know why people obsess over these things. They give us amazing music both as album records and live. Why bother ourselves with these superficial things?

    Don't worry so much about them using layering to their vocals. The "organic" sound the comments were referring to is that she can produce the growl without augmenting her voice. The vocal layering with the growls throughout the song is VERY common in metal. Most of the time it's for emphasis on words and you get a layering of the high pitched scream with a lower one. They reproduce it live by adding the one the vocalist isn't doing live to a backing track that's played with the song. Also that is the same drummer from pices!! He's been around for a quite a bit at this point so he's in most of their music videos. Love your reactions! Keep up up great work!

    This is the song as it appears on the album (produced) with Live footage in the video. They use reverb and echo at times to make the sound fuller.

    My Jinjer suggestion is a song called Ape! Either the one shot live or the official music video. Another suggestion is a song "No Hoard of Value" official lyric video! In my opinion thes are Jinjer's most underrated songs that have a great reaction potential!

    Love your reactions my friend! You nailed so many things/thoughts that frankly others just will not! Time for an actual live performance! There are many.... "Perennial-Live at Wacken" is a good showcase of the band....and of course Tatiana's one take vocal performance on "Judgement and Punishment(has a little reggae mixed with Metal)" BTW I love that you don't focus on lyrics, to me that's what it should be. Focus on the whole package then maybe later on if wanted look at lyrics.

    Great review / reaction! The overdub you hear is a percussive-style tapping on the bass to add texture. If we weren't all blown away by Tatiana's vocals we'd be mesmerized by the composition and arrangement of the music (not to mention the actual playing). This band is a powerhouse.

  • @barefootalien

    So in the slow section when you heard that second guitar, you're absolutely right. That's a backing track, also played by Roman. Live, IIRC, sometimes they include that backing track, other times they omit it and just let the chords ring. I think for the album version they had it to sort of keep the momentum of the song moving. Live, Tatiana gets the crowd clapping to keep the momentum up.
    See, Jinjer used to be a 5-piece. A lot of their older songs, therefore have two guitar parts, and they use the backing tracks to cover those parts. Moving forward, I think they probably just got used to that compositional style and the space-filling it's possible to do, so they still use it sometimes. I think I remember hearing them talk about considering adding a fifth member again to cover those extra parts live, but they said that they're just really comfortable with each other and happy with the dynamic they have, so they'd rather use a computer to fill in the extra parts here and there.

    Yeah, I think people get a little touchy when it comes to Tatiana's vocal talent because a lot of reactors will sometimes try to discount her talent so quickly. The colloquial they will search for ways that she processes her voice and when they find things that any or all of the greatest male singers will also do, then they quickly point the finger. I don't think that's what you are doing at all. Great reaction! I'll say it, Tatiana's one of the greatest vocalists out there bar none.

    Congratulations to the nice reactions you offer to us. I really enjoy this like all others I watched. Please keep on. It’s so interesting to listen to your analysis of the songs.
    To Jinjer: I totally agree and there are without a doubt layers/effects at different passages of the song. And I like it because it’s the Studio Audio Version of the Song. I’m not sure but I think they don’t layer „too“ much in their live performances- which are incredible. To get an impression of their stage performances you should pick „perennial“ live at Wacken. Also „Who is gonna be the one“ live is a very good example.
    Merry Christmas 🎁 🎄 to you and your family. Stay safe and healthy. Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪

    I keep rewatching the part at 12:35 because it perfectly shows a first time listening to Jinjer. I can see your head move upwards, im guessing you were assuming where the song was going at that time, then they just deliver it perfectly where all anyone listening can do it just throw their hands knowing they just nailed it.

    People sometimes don't understand effects. It can be something as simple as layering vocals, which Jinjer does do. There's also some echoing and reverb. Of course it's got effects guys. Every artist that produced and mixed has effects on their vocals. Her scream is organic, but to make recordings sound fuller they mix several recordings together.

    Great breakdown and analysis! I'm glad you picked the official video for this song. It's one of their few where the studio version slightly outdoes the live version, but only because of all of the little details that would be near impossible to do live, but that being said you should check out their live in Melbourne version of Teacher Teacher on your own. Their ability live makes it well worth the time. I'm sure many have suggested "Perennial live at Wacken" and agree that should be the next, but at some point check out "Pit of Consciousness live in Kiev". It is a personal favorite live recording of one of my favorite Jinjer songs.
