Clive Dunn was a WW2 veteran who served in the 4th Hussars. He fought in several battles in Africa until his regiment was captured in 41. He spent 4 years as a POW in Austria.
It is 2023. I was watching a British interview show. The guest, making a point, added the phrase 'they don't like it up 'em', causing a tittering in the audience. That's how you know you are dealing with a timeless classic, a cultural icon.
The platoon always missing the meal times reminds me of a story my father told me of his service in the RAF. A Flight of RAF airmen flew from the Far East to Britain via Cyprus - all the several times they landed to refuel, the canteens on the RAF stations had just closed down for the night - with the result that they didn't manage to get a meal until they landed in England, after 36 hours of flight, and even then under protest from the cooking staff who had to get up in the middle of the night to feed a group of very angry, and hungry, men.
My brother and I used to watch this in our p'js after our bath with a hot cup of milo on channel 1. We had 2 TV channels then and "bunny" ears as antennae. We used to use metal coat hangers to get reception. Ahhh yes....those were dark days. 😏
You had TWO channels ? We had just monochrome BBC1 on 405 lines with a valve TV prone to losing the horizontal hold. Bouts of that and the whole room would then seem to be moving up or down. No wonder we needed our Ovaltine !
I have been watching Dad's Army since the seventies. Still am watching all the re-runs on antie Beeb and on my third DVD box - as the previous ones were watched way to often... Never too old to enjoy Dad's Army...
Reminds me of a manager I once had. Did not know where he came from, nor where he was, or where he was going to. Became a director of a branche, drove that into the ground financially, and got an early retirement plus a royal bonus he used to buy a villa with.
😮Mainwaring is my absolute least favourite character!!Simply couldn't handle the fact that others had more experience, knowledge and intelligence than himself yet felt entitled to name himself Captain of the Home Guard!!And when the lovely Wilson was appointed manager & inherited the title of "Honourable".Cheers 😊
David Hussey I'm 33 but I feel the same way. They showed this on TV here in Finland when I was a kid. Didn't watch it that much then but I decided to take a look as an adult and fell in love with it. It also got me interested in cricket.
You have to appreciate that 9 years (80+ episodes) is an extremely long time for British television. This show ranks right up there with Upstairs, Downstairs in terms of longevity. For a comedy, it is virtually unheard of to last this many years on British television
One of the important things that happened to me is that while traveling on the Emirates Airlines from my city of Basra to Dubai, I watched an episode of this series and I started enjoying watching from this day .. This series is fun laughing at me passing time quickly.
OOOH memories! Already at the start tune I am starting to smile. Our family, in the Netherlands always watched it on TV, still have good memories at it. The cast is sublime.
thank you to go back allot of years, we all ( in the netherlands) where glued to the telly..very emotionel memory's watching it with my dad..who is in heaven now
That Ep with jones recounting his time in the desert...that all old fakka and the noise to cover up swearing . Perfect haha. Something about that music as well.
He would steal from his mother if he could profit from it (black marketeer--called in WW2 a 'spiv') I wonder how many faces does Frazer have?? (LOL) I really like Dad's Army! Thanks for uploading them.
Whoever plays Captain Rodriguez doesn't seem to be credited, but he should be. No hamming it up (like Hodges or the Vicar or the Verger) just a no-frills, quasi-realistic, perfectly-judged performance, giving the others something to bounce off . . .
At least if it ever went to court, Walker would literally have an iron-clad alibi for stealing the pig seeing as how at that very moment he was watching Mainwaring cross the river.
De trein reed al 40 km p/u toen Godfree naar binnen werd geroepen hahaha.....wel een hardstikke leuke serie...en ALLES wat leuk en lekker is, wordt ons afgenomen en vervangen door BAGGER !!!!
Walker is in two places at once in this episode: in the farmhouse trying to steal a pig and at the creek with the rest of the platoon. Maybe he had a twin brother.
Perhaps, they wanted to show that Walker would try to steal poultry from the farmhouse and would quickly run back to the platoon to prevent any scolding🤔🤔
at 20:29 Walker gets a barrell of water over him while the captain takes a dive in the swamp and a second later he is already dry. Walker at the swamp is a ghost i think.

I have difficulty in exercising restraing and not watching every episode in one long binge. Timeless, quality writing and acting.
Clive Dunn was a WW2 veteran who served in the 4th Hussars. He fought in several battles in Africa until his regiment was captured in 41. He spent 4 years as a POW in Austria.
He once said that the way he played corporal Jones was his revenge against the army.

Classic show. I remember this when I was young, it proves that classic comedy is well and truly still alive as it will always be.

There must be two Walkers. @ 20:30 one Walker is taking part in the war games at the same time the other Walker is stealing a pig at the farm nearby.
I noticed Walker was not in the scenes during the march. Judging by his weight loss, he was very ill during the taping of this episode.
Walker is in two places at once in this episode: in the farmhouse trying to steal a pig and at the creek with the rest of the platoon. Maybe he had a twin brother.

Any one know what the song is there playing about london falling down?
O sorry this is not the one you ment.
This song was a moral booster during Britain's darkest hours, and made play of the fact that the King & Queen refused to leave London during the Blitz, which continued until May 1941. Details as follows:
"THE KING IS STILL IN LONDON
"
(Composer Roma Campbell-Hunter, Hugh Charles)
Recorded by:
Carroll Gibbons & The Savoy Hotel Orpheans
Vocal: Sam Browne
Recorded 4th March 1941
Also recorded by:
Ambrose & His Orchestra, with vocal also by Sam Browne
Also sung by Clive Dunn, (Cpl. Jones) in The "Dad’s Army" Stage Show.
Lyrics:
"A sentry stands at the palace gate
Though he’s not dressed in red
His eyes are looking everywhere
But he never turns his head
The Royal Standard waves above
For everyone to see
The King is with his people
‘Cos that’s where he wants to be
The King is still in London,
In London, in London,
And he would be in London Town
If London Bridge was falling down
He’s got a house in London,
In London, in London,
And there within the Palace yard
The soldiers of the King stand guard
Strike up the music, roll up the drums
And let all the trumpets play
Tell all the world we’re facing the music
Here we all are, and here we all stay
The King is still in London
In London, in London,
Like Mr. Jones and Mr. Brown
The King is still in London Town."
They do not like it up 'em!
