I feel like maybe the artichoke is not meant for human consumption but someone was like no we are going to eat this even if it means we have discard 90% of it.
that's because this video is bullshit. Next to NO preparation. There are loads of errors. 1. Don't cut the stem off, it should be left long and broken off, that way the "hairs" come out. Don't apply scissors ANYWHERE. 2. Leave it as it is and simply boil them for an hour or so. 3. The spikey tips are totally soft after an hour. Use each leaf and at the end scrape the heart meat off with a spoon. So preparation is a pot, water, bring to the boil and make a damned dip. period.
Seems so odd to me, you spend all this time preparing and throwing away most of the vegetable, and then when it comes time to eat, all you do is scrape part of it off with your teeth. Seems like most of the vegetable isn't even eaten. It must be very delicious
HeyLookItsAmy It's actually very good! The only edible part is the whitish "heart" part. When you pull off the leaves of a cooked artichoke, only a small part of the heart is attached at the base of the leaf -- and that's what you scrape off and eat! What he didn't show is that after you've removed most of the leaves that way, you cut off the top and remove the choke (just like he showed as an alternative preparation). Once you do that, you have the entire heart part to cut up, dip in butter, and then consume!
I've been eating artichokes for 50 years and we have never bothered cutting off the tops. It really isn't that hard to avoid pricking yourself with the top of the leaves. Also, someone mentioned that you are only eating a small part of the heart when scraping the leaves with your teeth. That's true for the outer leaves, but the inner leaves have more "flesh" higher up. So, there is more to scrape off.
Exactly that what i just wrote, its really not intimidating. I've been eating since i was a child, my mom gave them to me for a good teething butter leaf with help, lil greasy for a child but so what, gonna grow out those clothers anyways lol
My dad was a produce salesman/manager while we grew up on the Monterey Bay near Castroville CA. I grew up with chokes with dinner all the time. No offense, but that was a lot of good stuff you cut off there while trying to basically get to the heart, but everyone cooks them differently.
I'm a military brat whose father was stationed at Fort Ord back in the mid 70's. We drove to California from Maryland. When we passed near Castroville, we saw signs advertising 100 artichokes for a dollar. We thought it was a typo. In Maryland, artichokes were almost a dollar each at the time. So, we stopped to check on these artichokes. Of course, these were the baby artichokes, but we had never seen them in Maryland. The size we were used to could be had at a price of six for a dollar. Which was perfect for us because there were six of us. My family loves artichokes and I think we ate artichokes every day for the first month we were in California.
Great video! I've always been intimidated by artichokes, I didn't know what to do with them. On a side note, you are so cute!!! I want to give you a a huge hug :D LOL Thanks for this video :)
Spooky; just yesterday I bought an artichoke. I knew how to prepare it, but I still wanted to come find a video of someone explaining it, and today, here it is.
In Vietnam, we use artichoke to make tea. We often cook the artichoke and pandan leaves in water for 2 hours and voila. The tea usually has a subtle sweet flavor and really yummy ☺️☺️☺️
You don't really have to waste it. It's fresh 'garbage' so you can actually compost it if you have a garden. Also technically you can steep the leaves and make delicious artichoke flavored tea. It's quite easy to drink and popular in Vietnam. I'm not a tea person but I loved it when I was a kid.
I grew up eating stuffed artichokes. My mother always prepared them and she passed away 2 yrs ago, I never watched her do it from beginning to start. THANK YOU for this video, I can now try to make them for my family.
Thank you sooooo MUCH! I love the taste of artichokes, but have always been intimidated about how to properly cook AND eat them in front of people. This is exactly what I needed! You're the BEST! 💖
I boil artichokes in water with corn for 1 hour. 1 artichoke + 1 flower (10 artichokes + 10 flowers) . If cook in "pressure cooker" is more quicker. No sugar added. I then drink this boiled water. It tastes very yummy, sweet, smell nice and off course healthy. And yet I eat the corn and artichoke too afterward.
WT@ !! This seems overly complicated & wasteful...and not only specific to this video. I'm going to go visit my mom as i don't recall her throwing so much out and clear recall eating the whole thing. If she lets me I will record her cooking some & then post it on here.
Why does everyone say they are so intimidating, we grew up eating them, you dont HAVE to trim the little thorns, they arn't too terrible, its not end of the world if you leave on tiny leaves, dont necessarilly have to lemon it as the edible meat is at base and steaming is bice but boiling is fine, its a snip, snip, pluck if desired and boil/steam, dont be intimitated, this version is more gormet version vs just cooking/boiling for butter dip and meat scrape using teeth for slow long fun delicious treat
This is weird. Just cut a half inch off of the stem, and boil the hell out of it for about an hour. Salt and butter in the boil is optional. You can deal with the rest of it later. Capice?
That was the most redic Video ever...Look Ppl steam or boil an artichoke..when you can put a knife through the bottom its done . don't trim anything dip the leaves in butter lemon n garlic n enjoy, when you get to the heart scrap the fuzzy off and eat it. its that simple....geez
I'm making artichokes for the first time. We love them, but I've always bought in a jar or can. Your video is so informative and NON-intimidating! Can't wait to see how they turn out. Cheers. And thank you.
Hi! Would you make a video on how to prepare meats from frozen (thawing process to cooking)? I'm specifically interested in steak. I bought a bunch of organic NY strips on sale, and froze them. Now I have a kitchen conundrum 🙀
When I was a kid my Mom just steamed them in a pot. No trimming, etc...we knew to dip the meaty part in melted butter, scrape it off with our teeth, not eat the choke & then delight in the meaty heart & stem. Everyone now trims them, & its lovely....I suppose either way its about the same amount of work. ;P
I’m glad I only bought one; I don’t get it; we throw away most of it but you steamed almost the whole piece and when u steamed it; did you throw away the fuzzy middle? That chokes us🙄🤔
i just found out that an artichoke can have spikes 😂 In Chile we eat artichokes just like so, we steam them, and we don't cut the 'spike' part of the artichoke, so i never noticed really lol
I have eaten them one time before and the heart part reminded a lot about the heart of the palm tree which is basically the same texture and taste and arguably with the same nutrition value as the artichoke... I highly recommend trying that it if its available to you... We have artichoke here but they are expensive compared to other fruits and vegetables...
We don't get artichokes here so I've never had one. What a tedious vegetable to eat! Great vid btw. I can see why canned artichoke hearts exist if this is the prep it takes.
i love artichokes! this was a very detailed and extensive explanation and although i knew most of it, there is a wealth of information in this video. thank you!
WHAT A WASTE!!! Perfect artichokes!!! I definetely prefer chilean method, boiled the "alcachofas" and then eat the leaves with lemon juice (or mayo whatever you prefer) then eat the heart and voilá!!! You eat it entirely and nothin went to waste.
I love artichokes! I love to eat them raw! I always eat the white part of each leaf first and then eat the artichoke heart with a bit of lemon and salt!
I feel like maybe the artichoke is not meant for human consumption but someone was like no we are going to eat this even if it means we have discard 90% of it.
oneworld24 i was JUST thinking the same thing!
oneworld24 hahaha....but the little that we eat is soooooo good!
oneworld24 I thought the same. Its such a waste
oneworld24 my compost doesn't think it's wasted, the trimmings make great dirt!
I agree. I rather the can or jar. however those leaves, you can suck something out of it. is partially edible
I regret buying my artichoke
readu100 you forgot to cut off the sharp edges and it attacked you?
Mobius Trip You too huh?
readu100 im guessing you made the mistake of not cutting off most of it and throwing it away.
I made the mistake of buying a vegetable that takes way too long to prepare.
that's because this video is bullshit. Next to NO preparation. There are loads of errors. 1. Don't cut the stem off, it should be left long and broken off, that way the "hairs" come out. EAT THE BOTTOM OF THE LEAVES DAMMIT ! It's good
Seems so odd to me, you spend all this time preparing and throwing away most of the vegetable, and then when it comes time to eat, all you do is scrape part of it off with your teeth. Seems like most of the vegetable isn't even eaten. It must be very delicious

HeyLookItsAmy True, a lot of work, little of it edible, but so worth it. Try grilling marinated baby artichokes... awesome!
I came for the artichoke, I stayed for the chef.
Ain't nobody got time fo' dat
Imma try it ONLY ONE TIME. 😰😰😰.......For Christ sake I still have Do my Walk......... Don't wannabe WORN-OUT!!!!!!!!
Grounds for DIVORCE.........😧

best dipping for artichoke, mash fresh garlic cloves, add some salt, squeeze fresh Lemon juice, finish by adding virgin Olive Oil ..mmmmmm....
+hannood amar thats what i do
oh interesting ill try it!
Jeez you pay for these things by the pound too. How to prepare an artichoke. Cut off most of it and throw it away.
LOL, I've been eating arties all my life, but that's funny right there:)
My dad was a produce salesman/manager while we grew up on the Monterey Bay near Castroville CA. I grew up with chokes with dinner all the time. No offense, but that was a lot of good stuff you cut off there while trying to basically get to the heart, but everyone cooks them differently.

Thank you! People keep cutting off so much goodness in these videos I’ve been watching
i agree, I grew up in California not far from Monterey- you don't cut off the leaves you scrape them and eat them!
Fr! Homie didn't have to do all that.
That was waaaay too much work!!! We just boil them for about 30-40 min, peel and eat!!!
Great video! I've always been intimidated by artichokes, I didn't know what to do with them. On a side note, you are so cute!!! I want to give you a a huge hug :D LOL Thanks for this video :)
oh my god, was is edible about it ? you took out everything
Try the garlic+salt+olive oil dipping for the leaves...
I love artichokes! I boil them on the stove & then eat them either plain or with a little mayo! 😋😋😋
Kat Yun can you make a video showing that, I'd like to see.
That's awesome!
Thanks! What a great idea! I was going to freeze the rest of the veggie for a stock later, but I'll look up some recipes.
so you just boil it in water and then drink the water?
OMG what a waste!
If my husband ever asked me to cook this, I'd DIVORCE Him!!!!
Artichokes are amazing! Delicious, great for digestion! And I think they're beautiful too & fun to prepare 😍
A lot of waste for such a small amount of food
They're actually pretty filling, and very good for you.

Try laura vitale's recipe here on youtube!! I'm sure that will be very helpful :)
Gabriela Irene OH MY Gabriela...I just watched it and YES it was VERY helpful..that is how she made them. I'm tearing up. THANK YOU so much! xoxo
Yes Vencenzos very true. do make a video, that will be nice to see and keep.
You're very welcome Lisa :)
I'm very happy I helped you. Hope it will help you feel a little bit of her loveinyour live again :)
Whenever I've had artichokes they've been cooked whole, this seems very unnecessary
Thomas's videos are so knowledgeable and informative. A really great segment on this channel.
Got my Artichokes yesterday with my rib cut lamb chops and I'm taking the challenge! Wish me luck!
Not at all inspired to go thru so much prep to "scrape my teeth" on them, if I have to work so hard then give me lobster !
You don't actually have to go through all that. You can literally just throw the whole thing in boiling water.
C’mon! Most videos show how they eat the “JEWEL” of the choke!!! I’m not giving you a thumb’s up! You missed the jewel.
Wtf. I had to throw away most of it. Too much work for that crap
I will wait until I'm retired. Then I will have more time to try cook this and realize the appreciation of it......
Fun fact.
I juiced a whole raw artichoke. Almost died but I learned my lesson
😆 LOL.........😂😂😂😂😂
Great video! Thanks for sharing your skills.
Thank you sooooo MUCH! I love the taste of artichokes, but have always been intimidated about how to properly cook AND eat them in front of people. This is exactly what I needed! You're the BEST! 💖
Very helpful this video! Thank you!!!

i almost cried when you cut off all the leaves, my favorite part dipped in a creamy sauce, what are you from the city? city folks just can't cook.😗😕😴
It was kind of backwards to scrape out the choke, THEN cut it in half. Cutting it in half first would have made it easier to remove.
This was so helpful, to the point and thorough. Thank you!
I do garlic butter and paprika
Finally. an Artichoke that does not scare me.
So helpful. Thank you!
Big huge pass... Those have the makings of very expensive compost..
This is weird. Just cut a half inch off of the stem, and boil the hell out of it for about an hour. Salt and butter in the boil is optional. You can deal with the rest of it later. Capice?
My favorite dip for artichoke is balsamic vinegar and mayo.
I make them much better and easier and a dipping sauce that tops all.
Sorry for the artitruth
basically like 5-10% of the vegetable is edible after all this work. smh
Am I the only person who eats the leaves? I scrape the edible part off with my teeth.
Please how to cook perfect fluffy white rice nd brown rice withe the difference
while this looked really pretty id never waste an artichoke like this
Dont eat artichokes vegitables have feelings too.

Thank you so much for this very informative video on how to prepare artichoke
Fuckn artichokes man I need some like now
This guy has no clue how to cook an artichoke
Hi! Would you make a video on how to prepare meats from frozen (thawing process to cooking)? I'm specifically interested in steak. I bought a bunch of organic NY strips on sale, and froze them. Now I have a kitchen conundrum 🙀

Super helpful! Thank you!
You did the best Artichoke Video & explanation of it. Gracias....!!!!
Yum! Steamed, baked or fried, they are the best. I don't like marinated or on pizza but plain. Thanks.
I’m glad I only bought one; I don’t get it; we throw away most of it but you steamed almost the whole piece and when u steamed it; did you throw away the fuzzy middle? That chokes us🙄🤔
Why not just buy frozen artichoke hearts? Otherwise it's way too much effort.
It's too much work but thanks for the video. It's very informative and I have always been curious about artichokes but I was clueless .
i just found out that an artichoke can have spikes 😂 In Chile we eat artichokes just like so, we steam them, and we don't cut the 'spike' part of the artichoke, so i never noticed really lol
my conundrum is for summer fun!....what do you bring how to pack it and re heat or cook it if you are going on a camping trip for a week????
Anyone came here after reading the latest chapter of Shougugeki No Souma?
for those who don't like artichoke you must try artichoke deep which is with cheese- outstanding!!
It's informative. Thank you!

I can see why canned artichoke hearts exist if this is the prep it takes.
Now I now what to do with the artichoke that was thrown into my produce box! Quarantine cooking at its finest!
you can boil an artichoke in water for a few hours on med-low heat and it makes a refreshing and tasty drink!(once cooled)
It's a lot of work for a little pleasure but once you get down to the heart of the artichoke it's worth it.
Great video man 👍🏼
i love artichokes! this was a very detailed and extensive explanation and although i knew most of it, there is a wealth of information in this video. thank you!
damn, why did I first buy artichokes and only then tried to figure out how to eat it o_O
I didn't know that was how you eat an artichoke...
Weird food. They are so expensive and you have to discard 90% of it
Wow so yummy ang healthy vegetables BETHECUTEBABY2022GLS
MARRRTTTHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!
WHAT A WASTE!!! Perfect artichokes!!! I definetely prefer chilean method, boiled the "alcachofas" and then eat the leaves with lemon juice (or mayo whatever you prefer) then eat the heart and voilá!!! You eat it entirely and nothin went to waste.
voy a buscar eso. siempre uso la lata porque esa vaina se ve muy complicada. pero sabe de bueno
I've always wondered what this strange food was and how it was eaten... I'd love to try it one day...
this guy is the best
best tutorial since watching more than 5 tutorials on this subject. great one!
I love artichokes! I love to eat them raw! I always eat the white part of each leaf first and then eat the artichoke heart with a bit of lemon and salt!
Great video!
so many things to do, and then only scrap the leaves with your teeth?
U barely get anything out of them but the Lil bit u do get is good...lol
Good video
Im getting my artichoke from a can, this is just too much!
wrong
Exact copy of Martha Stewarts youtube video about cooking artichokes. Exact- even down to the words he uses.
this videos are part of martha Stewart, she owns him and everyone
I really like how Thomas says "fuzzy"
Artichokes= great excuse to eat tons of butter!! 😍
They are even better with Hollandaise.
This was super helpful!!!
I'm making this today, thank you!
Thomas looks tired in this video. Go go goo tom! :D
Great tips. Thank you.
