  • Grammy® award winning pianist Billy Childs first heard Gershwin’s “It Never Entered My Mind" standard from his dear late friend Mulgrew Miller at a small Glendale, CA club called Clancy’s Crab Shack. Billy recalls, “...he played it so beautifully, I knew I had to learn it. I asked him to show me the tune after the show, which he graciously did. Mulgrew and I were like brothers." Enjoy this stirring rendition recorded live from Mr. Musichead Gallery (Los Angeles, CA), featuring David Robaire (bass) and Christian Euman (drums).

I can't believe a man like him, Billy Childs, never heard Miles Davis and Red Garland playing this composition on the album Workin', together with Philly Joe Jones and Paul Chambers!!!

What a gorgeous and creative exploration of this old favorite. Billy. Captivating! You'll laugh when I tell you of the line in the lyrics that floated up from an old memory file. ""It never entered my mind --that-- I even have to scratch my back myself." Sad, poignant, beautiful!

Beautiful! But it’s a Rogers and Hart composition, not Gershwin.

This song is by Lorenz Hart (words) and Richard Rodgers (music), not by George Gershwin.

Mulgrew and Billy in Clancy’s in Glendale? The place is closed down now, but I’ll always have the memory of Billy playing this now. Also, he adapted a song from the anti-smoking TV ad, “Like Father, Like Son,” in the 1960’s. He has a terrific memory.
